I'm sorry to hear that and I will keep you and your family in my prayers.
I'm sorry to hear that and I will keep you and your family in my prayers.
Joe , i am so sorry and totally understand .
Thanks guys, these sure are testing times however we will prevail. My thanks also to rockman69.
So I know I have promised photo's for some time. Well here they are. Had some time so thought I would show you all what progress we have made.:D
So you can see the water tank sitting in its base (only just fits in). All the lower areas have been painted with an epoxy paint. We will reuse the original two hatches. The one on starboard will access the battery switches and rear will mount busbars etc. The one to port will access a fire extinguisher. We have built the centre one which is a vent to allow centre section to breath (both batteries and fuel pump/filter etc located here. Also centre section will allow access via cover in transom to pod and bolts etc for jack plate.
Still to do. Fabricate lid for section aft of the rear seat. Complete construction of rear seat. Paint upper sections seat etc. We need to start with some of the rigging as some areas will become progressively more difficult to access.
Before anyone asks the "rocket launchers on either side " will be used to capture the Stainless Steel legs from the camper covers and allow storage behind the rear seat. Also this area will carry fishing rods etc.

And some more.

As time allows I will detach engine, jack plate etc and do final finishing for the transom/pod ready for painting. Getting closer now, onward and upward.
Thanks for your patience.

Joe , how is your wife doing , and how are you ?
Very impressive work, sir!
Gidday OG. Well all but wound my marine business up. We have a Montessori Preschool which my wife runs/ran. We are right in the middle of expanding it, selling existing properties and buy more dirt to build a larger purpose built centre. We are past the point of no return so I need to progress this. My wife starts radiation and chemo treatment tomorrow. I hope the new centre will give her a focus and another reason to beat this thing. My hope is to have some me time to continue my work on this project. Thanks for asking, I appreciate it.
Today I removed the engine and jack plate for the last time. It is now shrink wrapped and will be stored till final rigging. So now it is final external fairing ready for painting. I have moved the post on the trailer forward and moved the boat 19 1/4 inches further forward on the trailer. Looks way better on the trailer and I have gained more room in the shed. Nice to have a bit of MY time. :D
It's nice to hear that you got a little time to work on it. :D I'm keeping you and your family in my daily prayers.
Today my son Blair showed me a new "race" read Poker Run being set up by NZ Offshore Racing to be run in early December, 2013. It is to be run over three days in open ocean off the east coast of the North Island, NZ. It will be limited to boats over 19.5ft, capable of plus 50mph and no closed canopies.
So we are going to push forward and see if we can get to a point that we can run in it with the Nova.:D
Please note that I have accrued considerable brownie points with she who must be obeyed and have her blessing. ;)
I was told my "prototype"hull was converted to outboard. One problem I had with my setup was porpusing until I tilted my trim tabs down more to compensate .but now I think I have created more drag..I have 9"set back.I'm in the process of putting a 2.4BP on.I had a 175 BMax on it and 60mph was about it..I'll try and send some pics.I have some questions
I would suggest you run a thread of your own, you will get a better range of suggestions. I believe your problems can probably be reduced with experimentation of your setup. Photo's will help for sure. Suggest you just bolt up the BP and give it a go. More speed could help..........
We're anxious to see her in the water too! Don't forget the pics. :D I'm glad to hear that your getting more accomplished on it. Sounds like you may have her in the water in a few months?...Keeping you in prayers brother.
Started into the dash area. From this Attachment 279039
to this Attachment 279041 Attachment 279042
The black area shown fronts the cabin. None of these sections were glued all just screwed. I have glue coved to the hull side and then taped with double bias. Also other joins have now been glued, coved and taped.
We have removed the windscreen. The aluminium frames all need replacement rubbers to contain the glass, which may or may not be available locally. I am tempted to rebuild the screen with timber and re use the existing glass. We will see. I have removed a section on the right of the dash which also located the surface mount control for the Mercruiser. We will be using a side mount control and foot throttle. I plan to move the helm seat to centre on the new dash.
If we get the boat finished in time for the poker run I will build a lightweight section to replace the screen and give some protection. This will save considerable weight.
Its nice to see progress. :D
I had no idea that you were going to rework the dash as well. That is going to be one very solid boat when it's complete.
No room for the foot throttle, or the Garmin 750S sounder/plotter so I decided to deal to the dash at the same time. It shouldn't take too many hours. I will take the windscreen over to my glass guy next week to see about replacing the rubbers.
With the work I normally do I do tend to err on the "over built" side because weight is generally not such an issue as it is with trailer boats.
Tremendous work on the dash. Neat, clean and VERY nicely laid out.
I have been struggling with the dash layout. To fit all gauges, plus Garmin 750S sounder/plotter and VHF radio the mock up looked more like that for a 40ft sport fisher. Having to leave ones seat to see over the top of the dash was never going to work. So I have had to compromise on the aesthetics and focus more on the practical aspects. Today we successfully rebuilt it. The face will be covered in carbon fibre. Check out these EGT gauges I will be using.

I have emailed DBRacing for a price on 8 Pyro studs.......
During the dash reconstruction we removed the windscreen to give us better access to the top of the dash. One issue that raised its ugly head was the poor condition of the window/glass rubbers. These need to be replaced. If any one has any suggestions on where I could look for replacements I would be most appreciative.
Next post should have some pictures of the new dash.
Post a picture as well of the vacant windscreen "channel" and the rubber gasket you'd like info on.
That carbon fiber ought to look pretty nice on the dash and the all in one style gauges should help free up some space on the dash. I like it.
Joe , first off ............from one ole goat roper to another i hope all is going well ( wife ) and to make a long story short , i hope you ( suggestion ) will use a resin for the dash that prevents yellowing that.... has U V - Qualties , and once again just a suggestion .
Thanks Artie for the well wishes and advice. We have been using West Systems 105 epoxy resin zfor this project. Son Blair has done a lot with carbon so I have left it to him. I understand that he will use the same resin but use a different hardner, Z207 special coatings hardener. We will then use a good quality varnish for extra UV stability. Unfortunately it looks as though the Z207 hasn't been delivered in time for this weekend so I may have to borrow some to allow progress.
I appreciate your advice, I would hate to make a mistake.
Regards,
SJ.
Here you go Greg, not sure if its going to do any good though.

Not sure if this will give you something to work with. Two other options. Source moldings from a Nova being parted out or I build a new windscreen using the original glass....... I would welcome your comments or suggestions.
SJ.
http://usamarinewindows.com/12.html Maybe this place can help?
Anytime Neville. I hope that they have something that will work.
Today I got the dash all glued up. This includes the recess for the foot throttle. Took me longer than I had anticipated but good to see it all done. Today I played round with the old windscreen and have now made the decision to build my own. The original screen was available with a teak capping so I have decided to build a complete new screen out of teak. It may make the boat look a little more 70's than 80's. My original plan had been to keep the Nova as original as possible but I guess they never came out with outboards so what the hell.
I will get some photo's up of the dash once I have got it all glassed up.
SJ.
Glad to see you at home with the wife and back to some"R & R" with the Nova. I have silently been watching this thread.
Yesterday I got the outside of the new dash surround glassed. Two layers of 600grm double bias E glass should be enough.

Looking good! :D
This week I decided to lift the Nova off the trailer. I had moved the trailer bunks forward when I moved the boat forward some time ago. What I was not able to do was to drill and bolt the bunks in their new location due to the V of the hull stopping me being able to get the drill in.
When I built the boat shed I had to some extent over built it. So I stropped the rear pod/boarding platform, put another strop amid ships and a further one closer to the bow. My son gave me a hard time about what I was proposing to do but being my usual independent self I carried on.
This was to be a good test for the pod/platform and the shed structure. So I tensioned up the strops and lifted it some 3 inches off the trailer beds. I then moved the trailer out of the shed, filled the old holes in the beds and used linseed oil to seal up the exposed timber in the new holes I drilled. So she is now all bolted up tight and back under the boat.
Lowering the boat back onto the trailer was easy and due to the imminent paint work I have set it back on the trailer to aid masking etc.
It was nice to see the shed was up to the task. Note to self. Remember to tell the son he needs to have a little faith in the "old man". :leaving:
So the boat is progressing if somewhat slower than I would like. I am keen to see the paint go on. :D
