Texas20225, All,
Its been a long journey but I have rebuilt my CLE case with your help.
I was able to get the drive shaft reground on seal surface and bearing surfaces.
I ended up getting a set of aftermarket 44104T2 -> #2946. http://outboardparts.com/products/2946.htm.
(Hopefully I don't learn the hardway being cheap on the gears...)
Was able to get pinion depth to .025 thousandths and the lash approx .025 thousandths.
Presure test was successful.
However I do have one concern before I try to take it for a late Canadian season water test,
When I started the motor on the trailer (yes with water muffs)
Things seems to work well. Great water pressue etc. However I did shift into gear and reved up a little.
I could hear 'clicking' when I would let off the the throttle. My guess is that the momentum of the propshaft + prop is causing the clutch dog to disengage from the forward gear?
I performed a similar test on my other I/O mercruser and it seems to do the same.
Just looking for some comments before I potentally go out and destroy months of rebuild work!
Thanks again.
Paul.
it should make no noise like clicking??? disconnect the shifter from the arm, move arm back and forth just a smidgen (dont shift in to gear )to see if clicking stops it must be absolutely in neutral it take just a little to cause dog to bounce in and out of gear . i hope you did not weld and recut on bearing surface in over 20 years ive found no one who could do this its a special hardness treatment by mercury
Thanks for quick reply.
when in neutral there is no clicking. When in gear and then I blip the throttle I hear clicking in the gearcase when engine comes back down to idle.
Trying to understand if this is normal. I have never run in gear out of the water.
hmmm i dont believe ive ever heard such a sound:eek: but that not to say it dont happen good luck and good job:cheers: . just a fyi i normally run the case on the bibs for a while if its a fresh re-bearing job or rebuild of any magnitude it hurts nothing. what it does do is start cutting what does not match up when new, most every case make small amounts of shavings when new i generally run it for a hour or so then check my oil if shavings??? drain oil do it again there should be no more shavings and you did not run them thru your new gears for ever doin all sorts of not so good things
Successful sea trial!
only 8°C (46°F)
But worth it!
Only minimal shavings in the oil after test.
now the patient wait for next year's boating season
there ya go:thumbsup: yer on your way to a life time of un imaginable expenses in the Boating world or at least i have been for several decades and would not change any of it except i would of got a bigger mota right off the bat
