i had a sickness insurance, when I had a triple by-pass--------they told me I had the wrong sort of sickness and never paid a penny-----------showed 'em though-------I cancelled the payments???

This is no way to start a week------lets get back to boats and boating people-----j.

Had a great " Family " weekend-----it was mostly Jillys side but a couple or three were my lot so I didn't get a lot of shop time.
Made up for it this morning, was out there well before 8am-------the tools were hot and begging forgiveness by 9 .
When I really get stuck in and the shavins are all over, it usually means I got 2or3 projects on the go at once--------which means before they get finished there's a lot of loose ends and a number of items that need a finishing touch.
One such item was the R/R TRAILOR, I had that totally dismantled, a lot of things on it were "Temporary ", like the towbar------done a a new stainless one, finished the wheels, narrowed the stollage so the new wing fits it about right.
Then made a pair of cockpits for the wing out of dark mahogany---contrast--looks kinda neat.
Then I had one of my mad fits of depression-----thought I might try for a couple of " concept" outboards to stitch on the rear end.
Thats when the trouble started------do I do an inline six or a fat Vee 6?.
I have four of each on the go at the minute, now why would I do that?-----answers simple, at the moment, I don't know which will look best on the finished item, so that takes care of four of them.
Then I always manage to screw at least one of 'em completely-----so as an insurance I got enough all cut out and ready------just in case.
Wing has come together nicely, lots of colour and character-----had half a dozen coats of beeswax and is really tactile. You do not get that with epoxy or yacht varnish.
By the end of this week I should be ready for the final assembly, depending on how I get on cobbling the outboards together, will probably lay awake half the night trying to figure it all out!

Pilgrim, I think eight motors on the go at one time is enough-------jesus wept, if I started to try my limited skills on OMC lumps I could be declared of unsound mind. fours, sixes, Wankels-----the mind boggles. Not a snowballs chance in hell Pilgrim.

Chucking it down again and there's a biting nasty cold wind-----what is it they say about March-----in like a lion-----out like a lamb ( gospel according to my sainted mother). Out to lunch with Jilly's brother and his wife today------don't have to leave 'till 11oclock so I should get a good three hours in the shop this morning.
Tell you what, every bloody bone in my body ached last night, seven hours in the shop, on my feet all day does an 83 year old body no good at all-------usually do four hours and can get away with that without any untoward effects.
Went through the props I bought in Canada a couple of years back and came across a left and right pair of matching cleavers, all I gotta do now is figure out the gear case ------have a good day.

Bad idea trying to do miniature outboard motors-------buggered four of 'em before 10 this morning.
Then I thought-----just do one of your own bloody silly concepts of an outboard! Tried that this afternoon, let's see how it transpires before I get too eutrophic. Waste bin and floor littered with dead outboards-------nearly a wasted day! Have to try a new approach------the wing on the TRAILOR hooked up to the 1906 Rolls would turn anybody's head anywhere-------problem is ----its so nearly right----when someone like T2X asks you to do a job, you better do it right.
Don'tworry Rich, before you get it I promise it will be acceptable.
Next step is a suitable base which will make or break the whole piece.
There will not be a picture of the finished article posted-----would think the commissioner may show it at the fall Tavares meeting (that's only if he thinks it's suitable for the purpose-----otherwise you got another garage item Roger).

Went to see the new grand daughter and then on to "THE SCHOONER"in Shoreham harbour for lunch, I opted for a fillet steak with onion rings and thrice fried fries---------outstanding!
Had a window seat with English Channel and harbour views------really scruffy old fashioned pub with keg bitter and sensible value for money fodder .
Jilly and self always have this discussion before going to lunch with anyone, goes like this-----
"you can't possibly go out looking like that or in those shoes"-------now I will have know that I bought these shoes in Stuart in November------Featherweight -Sketchleys with a comfort sole, cost near a $100 but worth every cent----I could go to bed in these. I wear them to weddings, funerals,, work and pub lunches. Ok, so they get a little dusty in the shop with all that's going on in there-----I can usually Polish them enough by standing on one leg and rubbing the face of the shoe on the back of my trousers. Today she dumped the shoe polishing basket in front of me and growled "NOW"---------no point in arguing the toss when she gets like that-----it's called discretion!

Sometimes both of of them together Stavros------used to wear Birkenstocks but kept tripping over and leaving one in the odd airport lounge as I was passing through.
When I have finished and the heels are down to bare flesh and I have to say a sad farewell to my old shoes-----I usually hold a short service before they are cremated -----sometimes I have a few close friends to join me and we share handkerchiefs----this probably happens once in a decade-----I am incredibly fairy footed------me and my shoes remain friends for life.

Awake half the night sorting out the outboard concept------finally became clear about 4.30am.
I really could start up an outboard A&E department in Toys-R-US with all the bits of motors I got skulling around the workshop, will devote today to trying to come up with a suitable piece to hang on the wing.
Another great God given sunshiny day-----only just gone 6.30. and it's clear as crystal------only +1 degree but so beautiful.
We have nothing planned, no visitors, just each other for the rest of the week, should get four clear days in the shop and finalise all projects-------the two Walnut Sponsons for the wing keep looking at me, asking "When the hell you gonna get on with me?"

Hands are getting knarled and arthritic------bloody veins are like ropes----and another thing, where the hell did all those ugly big brown sunspots come from-----I didn't notice them yesterday!!!!

If I recall correctly, Ben Shafer was in charge of the program and a young engineer who left OMC was working on it. I think it was 20HP or so. Love to see the drawings.

What in the name of Sweet Jesus is a G stroke 2 E stroke TECH--------in our day they were, SILO, TWISTER, T 1/2/3/4, drivers are simple beings who do not " Multi task " well------on any given day at any race you care to mention at least 10% of them will be left on the dock, simply because the never connected the kill switch.
Guess the companies are vying for a different type of consumer these days.
Who in the world is depressed enough to stick three or four 300/400 HP outboards on a transom and go fishing. ( Sad Bastards)

Did take a couple of pictures of today's efforts with a couple of outboards for Rich's wing, left the bloody camera in the workshop------duh! -----dingleberry!----put it down to old age, senelity, dementure----whatever, there's no way I am getting out of my nice warm bed to retrieve the Kodak, It's bloody freezing out there tonight, you'll just have to wait 'till tomorrow.
Jonno, tell me the height of the ROTORY and I will have a crack at copying it, remember it will only be " Concept " I'm crap at exact and accurate-------I only do near and similar------it's fine if you don't look too closely.

Its finished until the final assembly before shipping.
It still needs a number and a paint job.
Am quite chuffed with the outcome, very presentable if you don't look too closely.
Was Rich who asked me in Tavares last November if I would be interested in making him a trophy-----thought about what might suit him for a couple of months before I came up with this one.
Wasnt 'till we saw the drawings of the Mercury Wankel that lit my candle----it was just so tall and thin and elegant and beautiful, with pipes-----every inch a racer. My efforts don't do the drawings justice-------sh-tty phoggies don't help help it none either.
Last page of the Lake X files says it could never be a production motor, due to the prohibitive cost----(would probably have bankrupt the company)

Suddenly got the urge to do an all black wing----cut the sponsons tonight ----they're waiting for me to start operating tomorrow morning. That thing is beautiful.... number should be either 700 or 7000 after the two most iconic wooden Switzer wings....

I know I only do CONCEPTS Rich but I think I could do something a bit nearer the mark!
Why does the 7000 look totally different-------is it because the canopy has been made to blend in with the hull?
Was it a black and white paint job?
Will look it up on the "dot-dot" (as my sister Ange calls it)! See if I can get an imprint imaged into my mind,-------better do it soon as Jilly insists I am loosing it rapidly!

Do hate to see walnut painted-------may have to start afresh with a chunk of two by four pine or Douglas fir, (fairly close grained softwood) it takes paint well.

Thanks a bunch Johnno! There's got to be something about you I like, but I'm Damned if I can remember what it was.

No piccies----needed to get a white primer coat on the sponsons and a black primer on the motors so it's all dismantled. Used a pair of straight sixes from the scrap box, decided to try for the 7000 in white with black motors------so far , so good. Will need half a dozen coats of paint and a couple of filler coats before it starts to look half tidy, it takes so long that's why I hardly ever use paint on a piece. That's the trouble with doing a trial piece------takes longer than the final piece, but I do learn from all the mistakes and can speed things up for the real McCoy.

Mostly talking to myself these days, don't anyone want to come out and play? One or two showed an
interest but folk are mostly getting geared up for the weekend---------me myself will be out in the shed fiddling with bits and pieces until something finally comes to light , Saturday or Sunday, makes no difference to me, one day is totally different from another, always something to do, something to look forward to.
Learning more about the iPad and the marvellous things it's capable of, clever bit is learning what makes it tick ----amazing that little thing-------Jilly says its a good job it can't cook or screw!

Not heard much from abroad this week-----think the March meet in Tavares is any time soon!
Less than two weeks and I should get my license back, time passes quickly when you're having fun.

Thanks Dave-----think you will like latest wing-----the 12" models seem to turn out best, not that I ever measure anything, just pick up a lump of timber or a stainless off cut-----turn it around a while 'till something clicks and off we go.
Somebody out there likes me and my stuff------still.

We got sunshine and clear blue today, next ten days are in double figures, spring has sprung and summers a coming, got everything to look forward to, including being able to drive again-----still, "it's an ill wind"------- did get to spend a lot more time in the shop by staying home (mostly).
Gone 6 ----time to rise and shine, get another coat of paint on the 7000.
No planned visitors over the weekend, log pile down to days, did some back yard clearing yesterday, will give the shop a tidy up----time to hustle.

(Just a touch better then a supercharged Mercury 400 Verado 2.6 ltr I suspect?)

COSWORTH was never short of "Grunt" pilgrim, this was the equation:-motor had a 10,000 rpm Max-----boat had a 8,500 rpm max which meant it got all out of shape at 125 mph.
Could only ever wonder what might have been?
To be blunt------did not need 700hp --------couldn't manage the 400+ I had!

Thanks for the accolades Don----had to come up with something a bit special, after all, it is for T2X.

Without really trying----you just go with the flow-----and something quite unexpected starts to unfold. Started the 7000 wing with a chunk of Douglas fir as I didn't want to use the walnut on a tryout job-------after six coats of paint and more than its fair share of filler it's beginning to look quite presentable-------not oceans removed from the original.
Purists will disagree, I'm happy with the concept so far which is all that matters.
Did a couple of straight up sixes without gear cases, mainly because they're a pain in the asse to construct------but it didn't look right, so I capitulated and set out to make a pair of club foots ( speedmasters are beyond me)----------"PREDICTED TEXT JUST CAME UP WITH SPEED MASTERBATING "
Anyway let's cut to the chase-----went into the wood scrap box and pulled out a lump of Spalted beech-----shaped up a V6 Merc head and mid section, then set about doing the bottom end.
Can't make up my mind whether it's a thing of beauty-----or a poncy piece, when it's ready for showing, I'll give you a glimpse.
Now you know why everything takes such a long time, I go off at a tangent and make outboards when I should be finishing a wing, I know, I've gone way past hope!
Been looking at a close up of 7000 and Damned if it hasn't got fuel filler caps, first job tomorrow on the south bend.
Still a couple of days away from posting piccies of progress so far, keep looking on occasions, I'll get there.

The 7000 was a wooden hull and the colors were an off white and WOOD trim that was covered over with clear varnish.

These are the two iconic wooden wings...... 700 (Miss Skyway) and 7000 (Gulfwind Marine)

Got a whole four hours in the shop this morning, undisturbed--------did the gear case for the T5 and got a coat of sealer on the head and mid section, only prop I had was a multi blade.
Promised you a progress piccie and there it is.

Finished one gear case for the 7000 and found a a little red cleaver that did the job admirably.
Those tiny gear cases are so damn fiddly-----they take forever to make.
Drill and tap for the drive shaft-----same again for the prop shaft--------get all the file marks out so you get a mirror finish.
There are no short cuts------problem is, if it's not perfect, son number one at "Wilson Custom Marine" who specialise in High Performance gear cases would be most buggeringly unhappy if the old man was turning out inferior toys.

Never did Get the fuel filler caps turned up, maybe tomorrow.
Got another ten coats of white on the wing----beginning to look a bit virginal.Took a picture of the rig------coming out of a stainless window-----needs raising by six inches, more to the centre, if your interested look out for tomorrows early posting------it's not finished, just a work in progress thing, but it'll give you some idea of where I'm heading.
All in all, a quite satisfactory weekends work with the same again tomorrow----should make big inroads.

Another view the "THANG" ---Pilgrim ---spalted beech does not suit the concept-----will try it in walnut or/and teak. Have some holly that may look ok. Steve just cut down his apple tree but you can still hear the birds tweeting in it.

These are the two iconic wooden wings...... 700 (Miss Skyway) and 7000 (Gulfwind Marine)

Rich, you gotta remember-------I only do "concepts"-----that way I can hide behind any mistakes and inadequacies that invariably occur.
Seeing those two wings together just gave me an idea, if you take a look at tomorrows early post, you will understand what I mean.

Six months ago Jilly's built in microwave up and died. I would normally just have replaced said item, but this is 2015 and the EU in its wisdom has decided that this cannot be done by any person who does not have a Brussels certificate of competence in Astro Electrical Engineering as it is a built in unit and not a worktop plug in you can buy from any hardware store.
Said person duly arrived with new unit only to discover (after two and a half hours head scratching)
it didn't fit ------I could stand it no longer-----so dickhead here who does not have the said certificate (signed by magistrate, lawyer, doctor or MP ) suggested he take off the surround from the new microwave, install new unit leaving old surround in place---------well surprise surprise------fitted like a bloody glove .
Upshot of this tale is-----I have a very nice stainless surround with a white wing leaping forth, with a bit of fernagling and a couple of days work-------there could be TWO wings leaping forth and fifth, 700 and 7000.
How do them apples grab you Rich?

Too late to do wooden tops on said wings, maybe next time, hope to God somebody out there has a yen for a wing or two or maybe a concept outboard motor, I got 'em coming OUTA my ears.
