Facts about Evinrude/Johnson racing outboards made my OMC

Did Mercury have a patent on the 60 degree V-6? I thought I saw that somewhere. If OMC had taken the 3 cyl. and 'morphed' it into a V-6 in 1970 that would have a been a better advancement. Yes, the Intruder was good. Could have been even better without plastic carbs, intake and fuel pump. An old OMC employee told me that the very first VRO pump was all aluminum. The company bean counters said it was too expensive....make it out of plastic.

The Evinrude F1-V8 2-stroke race engine is still the fastest outboard in the world.
More speed, more horsepower than any other race outboard. UIM F1 racing today is forced to use a heavier boat but safety cockpits make racing safer. Merc have not built any 2.5 liter F1 V6 engines in a long time. The F1 rules today is more or less spec. engines. You can not modify the powerheads the way you want. Some drivers have been disqualified for doing so.

Lars I hope Mr Phillips produces those photos while you are compiling this thread. I really enjoy your first hand experence with OMC racing thru the years and I have learned a LOT! Threads like this (Merc thru the yrs, etc) are what push this site waaaay ahead of others on the net. I also think this should be a "Sticky" for the future. Thanks again for your time and sharing your passion with us!

Andre Dierckx I think was a professional diver he experimented with his own belt driven pump operated fuel system on his engine and went on to many class wins I can`t remember him running much after 1976 this picture is of him in his no 37 Cougar marathon boat at the 1974 Amsterdam 3hr race maybe Lars has a race report for this race.

Thanks, the funny thing is the boat in the center we found and bought it back and I raced it a few times when I was 10 years old.
