Tricks that old racers get up to after retirement

Well Jackie.. my first Paris 6 hours was 1973 and there was no barges allowed during the race... (so barges in Paris was prior me racing there). To me the 2 liter inboard class was the "barges" in Paris. The OE class was always faster then the 2 liter inboard cats and fighting those waves from the heavy inboard cats was let us say no fun.
Below is the result from Paris 1978.
I did race the OZ class that year with Angelo Vassena and finish fourth.
You can also see the OE class did 135 laps and the S3 (2 liter inboard class) only 117 laps. Maybe you should have raced your 2 liter inboard boat to victory in the Paris inboard class 1978 instead of messing with the outboards in the OZ class..:):)

The Rotary was 100% legal in the UIM OZ class.

ok Lassie, so you never got to run the big boys race———- only after the barges were stopped. I can live with that. But just FYI, I was running Paris twenty years before that, not that it means anything or will buy you a beer on a barge.
I totally agree with you——— the S 3 class is the barge class, but a lot of Scandinavians have had a lot of fun out of them over the years.
So, you finished fourth in 1978—— Guess you had shed loads of problems to lose 17 laps during the day———- ah well, some days you eat bear !

I really cannot for the life in me see why you got so pissed off at me for running in the OZ class anyway Lassie, It’s nothing but an old long extinct, totally with out Formula hydroplane class that has only ever been an entry for barely legal engines———- it’s a class for tractors, tanks , multi engined monsters and anything you want to run that won’t fit in any other class.
But at the end of the day it’s UIM legal, like it or not Lassie——— even for the Cosworth.
And YES, we did mess with the OZ/s

I was really happy finish forth overall in Paris 1978. It was my first OZ class marathon race and our goal was to finish the 6 hour race. We had some powertrim problems and did use a 2.448 cross-flow V6. Renato used the new 3 liter V6 looper Fuel Injection.
I guess we match your result in the OZ class same year in Bristol..:)
Not sure why you did not raced the OZ class in Paris with us..

I,m not sure myself why we didn’t race Paris Lassie———- nobody would ever believe the politics involved.
From the UIM to the APBA to CART racing and auto racing in the USA That little old venture had far reaching effects across all the continents and in all kinds of sport.
All I ever wanted to do was compete with the factories, but neither of them wanted that!

I used to sell quite a lot of Mercury Outboards and the odd stern drive or two.
i believe that picture is on the cover of ROZ Knotts Powerboat magazine in which I advertised extensively ( at my own cost)
Believe it or not Johnno———- to get an alpha stern package, I had to buy the full package. Couldn’t even get boat builders deal on it.
In the end it was cheaper for me to fly out to Oshberg———- stay at the Best Western and screw a deal out of GG on a Ron Kones/Keith Black, KT boat and trailer, fully rigged and ship it back to England .
Never was able to buy a stern drive out of the importers SWMF. Having said that, Dennis Stacey, their service manager always managed to find me the odd part or two at an advantageous price.

So in answer to your question——- that’s not a Merc ad. It’s a Jackie Wilson bought and paid for ad.

Its got more connections than a 1950/s computor———- is that not a Mercury clubfoot I see dangling underneath a V8 caddilac lump, cobbled together by a bunch of ex Mercury employees and sold on to a well heeled Scandinavian company in the name of progress.
But I gather this V8 car engine is ok to be called an Outboard? Care to tell me WHY .? Lassie.

Most larger Honda outboards are based on their car engines.
The largest outboard factory in the world Yamaha and their V8 outboard is also used in some Volvo cars.

Right, now I understand Lassie, it’s SIZE OF COMPANY ,! Nothing to do with two stroke, four stroke, Rotory , diesel, paraffin or steam power.
I did realise that advances had been made in four strokes and diesels out there in the marine world.
Is it because their large V 8 car engines are used by Volvo ——- or because Yamaha or Honda make them ?
I only asked how come it was ok to call some car engines “OUTBOARDS “ and for others to be damned to eternity?

It's easy Jackie..an outboard is on the outside of the transom..inboard inside the transom..even a Swede can figure that out.
EPA rules today, same thing..is the power on the outside of the transom its an outboard and don't need a catalytic convertor. If the power is inside the transom its an inboard and must use a catalytic convertor.
So easy to understand..!!..for me at least..:):cheers:

You are usually good at blowing your own trumpet Jackie but you forgot to mention the OZ record at Windemere.I am sure you finished in 4th place in the 1978 OZ world championship race at Chasewater.
