What lower unit is on the 700X? It would seem that a single pinion lower unit would be sufficient for a 49in motor.
I wonder if that ratio would allow it to use props for the larger speedmaster motors? Mercury practice was to make props for the larger motors usable on smaller motors running the same family of lower units. The 50s could run the 650 props and the 850s the 1500 props.
The Hi Perf catalog says they had 13/16 ratio. Rumor is that std motors came with single pinion, but motors that dyno'ed 'extra' came with dual pinion. I think its more likely that Merc set some up for marathons vs sprint ... could be that the marathon motors were indeed 'extra' hp motors sent to specific racers
