OMC plant Belgium 1977 the new 2.5 crossflow engines were supplied all boxed so it was like opening a Christmas present they even came with a illustrated handbook.We replaced the old 2.0 litre engine from my boat and fitted the 2.5 engine then ran it in and tested it went like a rocket the problem was they had to use 2.0litre props over 1 yrs wait for new ones the 2.0litre crossflow ran around 7200 to 7400 rpm the 2.5 crossflow went straight round to 8400rpm with the old props the first race I was told not to keep the engine at 8000 rpm as the harmonic balancer weight on the bottom of the crank could lock up so I was told to drive straight through the rpm to get to 8400rpm which is much harder than you think well I was miles in front after 6 laps I even started to slow down but the engine didn`t last.Back to Belgium and the technitions said it had been built by farm boys so they stripped my engine played round with it then we went testing it never went as fast again I think they tried to work it like the 2.0litre engine so that's how I raced it that season it wouldn't match my teammates for speed anymore.1977 the Amsterdam race was coming they had 1 new unopened boxed engine built by the farm boys it should have been for Irwin Zimmerman but he had gone to race for Mercury so we fitted it to Alfi bullens old Burgess boat tested it and it went like a rocket just like my first engine had done so good old farm boys.The Amsterdam race was for 3hrs over 2days the first race Molinari won I was about 1 lap behind in 2nd place but my teammate Hans Pelster driving a brand new burgess was the fastest Omc boat there but never finished so for sundays race he gave me his prop to use which was the best one for that engine it allowed me to match Molinari for speed even in the old Burgess but I got black flagged for trying to pass him on the outside for going too near shallow water.I raced that same engine all the next season without a fault for over 30hrs.

Here is STEVERINO in his #17 OZ class Molinari/Johnson V6 RS..not sure if it is a 2.448 liter or a 2.6 liter cross-flow but pretty sure STEVERINO is going to tell us.:)

Francois Salabert of France.
This is from Leon, Spain.
The first race in the F1-V8 series 1982. This was also Francois first race with the same V8 power as the other two JPS boats driven by Tom Percival and Bob Spalding.
Francois did extremely good and finished second in this race with his brand new #12 Velden Racing/JPS/Johnson V8 3.5 liter 2 stroke looper.
Yes, I was there racing F3 and did little bit better than Francois..:)

HeeHee John, I don't know. Could be but probably not. Not sure if it is close to Reanato's place or closer to the City Como where the race normally was run.
Back then I love going to Lake Como, but have not been there for many years. Last time was 1993 when my brother Lennart raced the "piston eater" Merc 2 liter class..:)

In 72 we set up & tested from Scottie’s place across from Molinari. We tested our Paris stuff & the Kenosha built 8 carb motors for the Como race. I remember that complex might even be the Avila d Este hotel. I was in 2nd then hit the big roller from the catamaran ferry & fell deeply in it’s wake after passing Vasena. At the club house turn it cavitated so bad I stopped got out on the deck & checked the prop, nothing. Started again no problem but lost a lot of ground. We actually turned close to a Molinari factory then continued into the Switzerland side around an island. The water was so clear you could see the bottom. Merc team was on a barge near Molinari’ I went right at them then turned quickly & wet them down.

Yes John, the bad part with the Como race was large rollers and tough water conditions.
One year the pit was flooded (1983) The water level in the lake was extremely high.
I never got the opportunity to see Scottie’s place but was at Renato's place many times.
Don't remember the name of huge old classic hotel/resort by the lake where the nice after the race party was held.

Today's UIM F1 and F2 boats must have crash boxes to save the drivers from side impact accidents. Also a 10 centimeter (4 inch) head clearance with the helmet on.
This is a close to 10 year old rule but this year UIM is going to enforce the rule 100%
Many old design boats is not going to be able to race anymore.
You can see how wide the drivers cockpit is in the first picture.

Sst45 have had 3 upgrades in the rules for their cells

SST classes are under APBA and does not need to meet the tougher UIM safety rules.

many rules come from the same document, but saying that yes the cell rules are a bit behind in the rest of the world.
everyones rules are behind when it comes to the the cockpit lid.

UIM F1 & F2 boats and F4s
I was told someone is suing UIM and maybe APBA after an accident with back injures because the 10 cm (4 inch) rule has not been enforced. I think its a European built boat. This rule have been in the rule book for years.
If a boat don't pass the the head clearance rule is not going to be allowed to race in UIM racing this summer.
Bob Wartinger knows all about this. He is in charge for UIM safety.
APBA don't follow the UIM rules for F1 & F2 boats so the US racing its not going to effected.

The UIM F2 class is getting really large. Up to 25 boats at the races.

Because that’s what Lou Eppel wanted. Whenever I could I went Evinrude, my favorite & my brother was a District Ssles Manager for Evinrude

Ben Robertson is probably one of the best boat racing drivers ever. His experience is enormous from F1-V8 to Offshore racing and he use to have the World Fastest V bottom record.
Now is a plan to retake the record and I feel pretty comfortable he is the right man to do it.
Its a risky operation so be careful my friend..

I just talked to Ben Robertson and there is a lot of misinformation out about the record attempt run..the info in my post above is "fake news"
The new purpose built Fountain is going to be set up for Ben only.
He is going to drive and control the throttles
This is great news because I think its safer set up.
The first two pictures is Ben in Stockholm, Sweden last summer. He was asked the drive the Fountain 42 he rigged with 2 X Merc 1350.
The next two pictures is the new purpose built Fountain for the record run. The power is going to be 2 X 1950 Sterling engines.

Today January 29 is my best friend and wife's birthday. For over 30 years ago I asked Carina to leave Sweden for "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness" in the USA.
If I have told her 30 years ago we are going to end up living in a "house on wheels"..maybe we still had been in Sweden..:)

Just over 40 yrs ago I first met Fred Hauenstein now that was a long time ago he was at the OMC European racing factory in Brugge Belgium. OMC had just taken delivery of some new 18ft Molinari racing boats and Fred was helping Ron Anderson to fit the fuel injection systems to all the new 2.5 crossflow engines I think they may have been 6 or 7 identical Molinari outfits they were being prepared for the 1977 Paris 6hr race Fred was over with his brother to race one of these outfits. Now I thought Fred was part of the factory team but he told me OMC didn`t like the idea of a employee racing boats so Fred and his brother had bought one of these Molinari boats for themselves to race and taken holiday leave from work he did tell me he had built his own engine for this race and was very helpful to all the other competitors he was a real gentleman and helped everyone there.

I wa an employee driving for the T*A*R*T team funded indirectly by O M C granted the Executive VP but with factory race team engines. In the states that meant that I had to compete in S class.

Fred had direct access to all the dyno, info, machine shop etc. while Jimbo had only remote access. Wasn't that EVP Jim Briggs? Major OMC stockholder and in charge of the Lawnboy division?

Yes it was Jim Briggs who coincidentally was bringing his boys in to racing & I guess at least my father thought so, I was to be their mentor as well as drive & manage the team. Actually I was with OMC Lincoln, OMC’s non Marine products group. But John, each tech that built the powerhead s knew what the hp was of what they built for each race. HP of the engines was the determining factor as to which driver was assigned which engine decided by Jack after Jimbo getting the best one.

I meet the Briggs brothers in Paris 1974. I remember all the talk about the Briggs family and how powerful the Briggs family was within OMC.
The #30 ON class Scotti/Evinrude Super Strangler V6 2 liter cross-flow had a beautiful paint job and in was painful to see the #30 boat in pieces after the race.
