Kankakee OPC nationals but don’t remember the year
Micke Frodé goes from a SAAB inboard to outboards.
The Z-4 cat below build by Mikael Frodé around 1976 was first designed for a 2 liter SAAB 4 cylinder inboard..
Well..on the back of the transom Mikeal installed a paddle wheel…!!!!!
The paddle wheel was very good but SAAB in Sweden could not deliver the 240 horses as promised..only around 110 hp..!!
A very disappointed Mikael took the SAAB engine out and replaced the very advanced/effective paddle wheel with a brand new 1977 Evinrude..2.4 liter V-6.. 200 hp outboard.
With the right power the cat was flying and Mikael scored his first overall win in the famous Roslagsloppet the same year..
Here is a picture and some reading in Swedish..

I was at the race in Dayton Ohio when they introduced that motor, at our stock outboard nationals.
They ran an exhibition with two of those on boats against D or E mod hydros and they gave them a half a lap Headstart and they passed them coming out of the first turn!
I was blown away!
Killer motor/class.

What were the specs for SE in Europe? That boat looks big by APBA standards for an SE boat?

SE or OE? Is there a difference in Europe?
SE may have been the biggest class in OPC, but certainly not in APBA
Yes it did but the SAAB engine did not deliver the horse power needed and Micke Frode picked the powerful Evinrude V6 - 2.448 liter cross-flow instead.

200hp+ 4 cyl engines didnt really exist in those days ( ok Cosworth BDG was 270hp)
I am not sure but Micke Frode was very good at getting 2 liter inboards go fast. This was his boat before the paddle wheel cat and if I remember right he was using a 2 liter Opel engine close to 200 horses.
SAAB in Sweden promised Micke a new design 2 liter 200HP+ engine but Micke could not wait..he wanted to go racing and refitted his very nice cat with the Evinrude V6.

I wonder how much HP the 2.0ltr xflow and looper were?
Only Jim Nerstrom and people like him from OMC know the correct answer. Everything else is just a guess.

The crossflow OMC 2litre engine varied on power they worked them a lot 3 outfits with the same engine could vary in speed by as much as 12-15 mph but I never saw one that was blown up bad whatever went they could easily be fixed.I am sure the pistons were forged by cosworth the same as the 3cyl pistons.Lets not forget all the 2.0 crossflow engines were in Europe by 1975/ 1976 I remember asking Barry Woods if he ran this engine back home he said he was still using a V4.
Any recollections of how the power of either 2 litre compared to the 2.48 crossflow CCC/RS? Or were they never raced together.
BarryStrawn,
I have experience with that,
The #29 ON class Molinari/Saffa/Johnson V6 RS 2 liter looper in the picture below is me. I drove #29 boat for a few hours at Lake Como 1978 and raced it the weekend after in Milan. (Idroscalo).
Renato wanted me to test and race his bigger boats before Paris 6 hours 1978. This was extremely fun for me and I ended up second to Renato at the race in Milan.

After the Milan race we went back to Renato's place at Lake Como and tested the #11 OZ class Molinari/Saffa/Evinrude V6 CCC 2.448 liter cross-flow. (Picture below)
This was the boat Angela Vassena and I drove in Paris 6 hours 1978 and finished fourth overall.
The OZ class boat was longer and more a marathon race boat. My memory tells me both engines was pretty simular. I remember the Paris engine was using more fuel. The boat was pretty heavy fueled up..!!
