Gar Wood, I went to school with his grandson - Gary Wood. Miami Country Day School, middle '60s. He raced one of Ted Swing's Swingers, dark blue & white. Reemember the boat, I ran quite a few screws into that hull. Forget if he ran D or E.......
...thought this simple photo could show the layman how pinion gear backlash, using a dial indicator was performed. the amount of pinion gear backlash that would be allowable, and in "spec" tolerances, is adjustable by simply adding or subtracting shim(s) under the vertical driveshaft bearing, thereby raising or lowering the pinion gear mesh thats at the bottom of the driveshaft...https://www.clubedoarrais.com/wp-con...motor_popa.jpg
Yellow artist's paint in a tube - the pattern is much clearer
...off topic question bum. what are u guys going to do(and laud marina) & places like you, going to do about supply of omc/brp large motor parts?
That is not true . The drive shaft bearing is shimmed to achieve pinion height .
.025 +/- .0005
The "flag" does represent backlash , however it is adjusted by the shim behind the forward bearing race …
Set it by the book , with the proper tools and you wont need to paint the gears and pull the carrier ..
Although I do have wet Permatex blue , drying Dykem blue and a yellow paint stick.
Since I have a pinion depth tool for a 9" Ford , I don't use paint there either .. :nonod:
...last 9'' i owned was a factory "WAR" 9'', in one of my original muscle cars in the seventy's. you ever heard of the WAR rearends? those letters were actually cast into the front of the pig as they came from the factory. kinda rare in those days. my others were the factory "N" nodular iron 9''er's, like this one... that was a lot of years ago for me.https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8086/8...cca87167_b.jpg
Not familiar with the "war" diff, just 742's & 489's :leaving:
Before we test my memory .. ;)
See that guy in the front (pinion support) with 5 bolts .. There is a shim or two between it .. and the case . It is shimmed in and out to establish pinion ht. just like a Merc lower pinion is set . The side adjusters move the ring gear left and right to set backlash , same as a Merc propshaft is shimmed front or of back to achieve the same goal ..
Ford parts .. I still have a bunch , because I never really used them .. :)
Lets see …
A single rib case is std pig iron and had 2.892 side bearings . Mostly 28 spline axles.
A WAR case is std pig iron with two ribs 2.892 and 3.062 side bearings . 28-31axles.
A N case is nodular iron , two rib , most 3.062 bearing , 31 and some 33 axles .
I liked using the early small banjo housings that came in F-150 trucks , vans and Rancheros .. by 1995 I bought Mittler Bros. sheet metal kits a half as dozen at a time. 3" x .250" wall molly for housing tubes for door cars and .188 wall for dragsters. And still can install , small ford (for 8.8") , big Ford early and late ends , Olds / Pontiac ends , Lamb ends , MW ends , Strange ends , and Strange floater ends .
My biggest seller was the Strange aluminum case with 3.250 side bearings and 35 spline axles . And either std 28 spline pinion stem or the 35 spline Pro stem 9310 gear sets.
Big inch nitrous or blown alky , was always a Strange Ultra case with 12 bolt ball bearing pinion support and thru bolted caps . 3.812" side bearings , 40 spline gun drilled axles , scalloped flanges or floater and 9.5" gear set …
I remember it like it was yesterday … :D
And yes Mopardude .. I have a bar and bushings to put those ugly :p 5 bolt Dana 60 ends on a 8 3/4 too … ;)

Why do all that when most mopar big block hot rods could be had with a dana 60? I do understand you are talking race cars (read weight savings), but us "normal" street rats could just check the right box. One thing I liked about chryco back then, they would build damn near anything on a standard order. No factory approval, not even for an orange car with a green interior. I've seen 2 of those & their build sheets. 1 Challenger & 1 Sport Satellite.

How do I say this … Cuz the Dana 60 , has a Dodge or Plymouth hitched to it .. :nonod: :nonod: :D
They had their time and place. I've put them in Vette's to Vega's .. Way to heavy and most racers have those plastic carry cases with different geared center sections or a spare with their favorite. Starts clunking , or bad air and a ratio change will get back what the air has taken away. You can have a brand new chunk installed in 15~20 minutes ..
powerabout<strike></strike>Here's a hint from post # 1697 :D
how are you holding the fwd gear still while doing that?<strike></strike>
Set it by the book , with the proper tools and ...
LMAO, Chaz!! Everybody's gotta love sumthin, for me, it's old school mopars. My father took me to my first Daytona 500 the year they debuted the hemi. Ruined a 12 year old mind :rolleyes: I understand exactly why, in your world you do what you do, remember I said street rats. Didn't say, but was referring to '60's era. But yes, MUCH easier to change just a chunk. Been using Snap On figit spinners for 55 some years (-;
I see the MO registration, but that looks strikingly similar to an accident our next door neighbor's son had. Somewhere in the early '60s, he apparently blacked out in the family runabout down near Pelican Harbor & speared a cabin cruiser. His family name was Adams & he impaled a Cuban Embassy boat. Anyone remember it? I barely do, mighta been 10 years old then.

Should we tell the pooch he's facing the wrong way, or maybe he's backing her in a slip.......
