I did use two fuel tanks for my Offsore Z-1 Argo/Delicato/Evinrude V6 2.448 liter cross-flow installed down in the pontoons 1978. Not sure if I liked it..many complicated things happened with a single engine and fuel for two hour of racing.Quote:

in post 1685, the #31 boat. I have one of those 88 XP200 carbureted loopers. I love the sound, it reminds me of a big block chevy at idle.

My mistake although I do have the 88 XP. It has an 87 2.7 Johnson GT hiding under the shroud.
OK..the 2.7 liter V6 looper is also a very good engine.
Wonder why Clericis were not brought over to the US? It would appear that they were competitive with the other European boats at the time. I have seen plenty of Molinaris, Scottis , Schulzes and a few Miles and Burgess. Never a Clerici?

This is from the OE class European Championship race in Denmark 1981.
I raced my #1 Burgess/AKAI/Evinrude CC and a really tough fight with Ulrich Rochel in his #20 Burgess/Konig boxer 6 cylinder. After a weekend racing the 4 heats
and some technical issues for me Ulrich won and I came in second.
Micheal Werner in his Molinari/Merc was third.
John Hill in his #52 Burgess/Johnson was fourth but got disqualified.
Sorry for Danish only but picture and result is easy to understand.
The second picture is my boat in that race.

Lars, I don't want to appear dumb but it is what i do best..would you explain the difference between looper and crossflow?
What many may not know, the drawings for all the parts were done on drawing boards with paper and pencil. The patterns for the casting were done in house by the OMC pattern shop and all the machining was done by the OMC machine shop. Modifications, builds and dyno work was done by the OMC race group.
did anyone keep the 2.0 xflow and looper and 3.0 looper drawings or even photos?
Not a dumb question..here is an easy/simple explanation. The larger piston in the picture is a loop charged (nickname looper). The smaller picture a cross-flow.Quote:

It is very, very difficult to do correctly.
If the motor happens to be a cross flow, the deflector on the piston becomes a giant, glowing, barely solid enget! That gives different readings that a looper w/o the deflector.
It also adds a ton of weight to the top of the piston that at TDC @ 7k is putting ungodly forces on the end of the rod, trying to rip it off, each revolution.

It is the old production cross-flow (OMC) and old Merc direct-flow giving the 2 stroke outboard a bad/dirty reputation.
Mercury's first production looper was 1976. V6 -175HP 2.0 liter.
OMC's first production looper was 1968. 3 cyl 55HP 815cc
Archimedes/Penta outboards was first with production loopers. Not exactly sure when but guessing early sixties.

Hey look its a slimline Alfi Bullen driving his brand new no 6 Hodges boat with a ON class 2.0litre Looper engine this was the only other race in 1976 apart from the Paris 6hr race that these engines were used I think this was a world championship ON class event.I can tell you my old friend Bill Badsey was there driving a OMC 2.0 litre Looper engine but his luck ran out on him he flew his Cougar boat and ended up in hospital with a suspected broken back but did eventually recover some months later.The new Hodges boat that Alfi used had a 2.5 litre crossflow engine fitted to run in the OZ class in the next race in Holland but Alfi flew it and ended up in hospital the Hodges boat was wrecked so he had to go back to his old faithfull his Burgess boat.Quote:

Roger Jenkins was racing the Archimedes/Konig for the first time at this race.
This was also the first time the Volvo Penta/Konig was doing really good in the OE class and Roger Jenkins was leading the race when something went wrong.
Well, my brain started to spin: Me Volvo Sweden Upset with OMC racing, Belgium OMC kicking out Billy Huzell next year (the Swedish distributor for Evinrude) who really was behind the money for my success in racing
The two OE drivers OMC, Belgium picked for this race was not doing good.
Remember OMC was using laughing gas to go faster in the OE and ON class, but that did not really help in the OE class.
This was also the first time I did see Renato Molinari play really dirty in the ON class, well not Renato himself but his second team boat driven by Zoppi (I think his name was). Zoppi sank Cees van der Velden on purpose by running over his #11 Velden/Johnson just in front of us at the race course. Velden was really fast and was on the way to win the race.
Molinari ended up winning both OE and ON at that race, but not really in a proper way. (ON)
OMC racing, Belgium had a bad bad weekend, and after the race OMC wanted Bo and me to race Amsterdam and Paris with one of the OMC factory OE boats"

The Offshore Z class was popular in Scandinavia 1978. OMC power and mostly ARGO cats.
Z-251 Argo/Johnson V6 is the Fabritius brothers from Finland. The builder of ARGO cats.
Z-200 Argo/Johnson V6 is Hans Strandman
Z-4 Frode/Adidas/Evinrude V6 is Micke Frode with his own cat.
Z-1 Argo/Delicato/ Evinrude V6 is me.
