I'm more of a nitrous guy ( mad scientist ) , but I did run a 509 ci motor with a hi-helix 8-71 . Pretty mild in the scope of things and still made 1500 + . So putting out three times displacement is not a stretch . Putting it in the hands of the public and offering a wty could be a real problem ... ;)Quote:

Is the boost level on these conservative or high to make 400 HP?
I'm not sure of the boost level but it's definitely set at a conservative enough level to keep the engine reliable.
On a side note, to this day, the introduction of the Verado 300 at the Miami Boat Show, 2004, was the most impressive product launch ever. It was just an incredible day. I need to post some photos from that.
The 400 R develops 15 pounds - at sea level on a cool day with low humidity . When altitude and atmospheric conditions require , it has the ability to generate 29.5 pounds to keep the horsepower at 400. This is accomplished with an electronic boost control valve. Go to 400 Verado on U-Tube - Mercury Marine video explains it. At my altitude - 1800 ft , my 300x only makes about 305 hp on an ideal day - cool and dry - so most of the time I would guess 290 hp. So I should have about a 100 - 110 hp gain .I should have the 22 Talon in the water in about 10 days - I will post the results as soon as I shake it down.
That seems like a lot of boost. Very cool. I appreciate the information Robert, and definitely want to see your Talon.

To say you at 1800' above sea level sound's like your at a disadvantage compared to us at 6' above.
It's really about what the corrected density altitude is in your area for that day.
Here in Florida I have seen mornings that were -300' below , and summer afternoons that were +3500' above .
Pilots and dyno operators live by ( no pun ) the correction factor. I would hate to be in a plane at night where the pilot thinks he is 10' feet in the air and is really over a 100' and is going to just set it down nice and soft. Or buy a 350 hp motor and have it "only" make 270 when you get it home 1500 miles away.
Boost or "manifold pressure" is a funny thing too. Say you make 15 lbs. Then put on a better flowing head. ( less restriction) you speed up yet boost goes down .
It's good that today's engines deal with load , rpm , fuel curve and ignition timing . While it might not be optimal under every condition , it sure is better than wetting you finger sticking it the air and make a call on the tune-up ... ;)
