It's supposed to be near 80 this weekend!
80!!! I'm goin up north to buy a snowmobile.
Hey Velocity fans,
I posted on Aaron's thread (about V22 setup in Washington state) that I pulled the Velocity out of storage and got to look under the decks....Aaron had said the fiberglass was yellow and Steve Stepp told him it wasn't glass but it was kevlar.
You guys have any more info about that?
Under the dash and decks is definitely yellow. Don't know about the sides, they are carpeted...and the bilge is painted...
Just curious - do I have a kevlar hull, just kevlar decks, or am I barking up the wrong tree??
Hey Kent
The Blue one I had was Kevlar and it also was a yellow color.
Interesting, Jim. I wonder what the weight difference is between kevlar and regular glass....?

A glass boat was 1500 lbs. and the Kevlar was either 1225 or 1275. I can't remember which. So the savings was either 225 or 275. I think this is why I can’t remember, these #s have my dyslexia kicking in. A year or 2 later they offered the cabin as an option. In glass the boat weighed 1650 with cabin and still 1500 W/O.
I have a Steve Stepp Velocity flyer, no date, but it's the hull without the cuddy....hull weight is listed at 1411 lbs.
I *think* 1986 was the last year of Stepp V22s for a while - mine is a Regal version and is a 1987 with the cuddy. Don't have a brochure on it, but NADA lists the Regal V22 as 1650 lbs. Stepp was working with them in '87, this boat had a sticker on the side with his signature...then by sometime in '88 he left, unhappy with Regal's direction and quality controls. Regal built the V22 from '87 through 90-91.
So since, mine is a heavyweight to begin with, I'd be very happy if it was a kevlar version, it may be 200+ lbs lighter than what I originally thought!
Yea I never saw a brochure I was just going by what the salesman was telling me at Jerico Boats in Long Island. I would say you can figure at least 225 off the 1650 maybe more.
Jim, here's a link to the V22 flyer, fyi...
Velocity 22 Specifications
Hey Kent
Just took a look at the brochure. I think the weight of the 86 through 88 models would be the 1500 or 1650 with cabin and more weight with models 89 and newer, and here's why. Having had a couple of these and been around about a dozen and also different years I can see that the year in the brochure is a 1985. I can tell by graphics and the square corners of the back seat. The 86 and newer have a rounded corner in the back seat. As far as weight goes on the 85 and older if you walk across the deck (and I weigh 160) you can feel it bow unless you walk where its supported. On a 86 or newer you can have a party with everybody that can fit dancing on the deck and it wont bow. A few pages back was my buddy Dam and myself out racing both of our 1985s and the decks are the same on both. Another friend of mine bought Dans boat about 20 years ago cause he liked my blue one that had a V8 on it at the time and wanted something similar. Back then when we compared boats I thought his boat was almost as light as my Kevlar model just because of the light deck. So anyway I think the 1411 in 1985 was due to a light deck but I would bet the hull is full weight and strength. This is an old race trick put a flyweight deck on a solid hull, and don't forget this is a hull with plenty of race heritage. I had a 520lb. Mod VP Laser and the deck weighed 75 lbs.
James I think that was one of the most informative posts in this thread yet. Thank you for sharing
Hey Mike
Were gettin closer to the Romp. Hey if I remember correctly back a # of pages someone said they talked to Steve Stepp a few times and he was always very informative. Maybe we should find out who it is that has the re pore with him and have them ask him a few question. We could make a list of important questions, like optimum drive height per HP/weight/propultion configuration, the weight question we were just talking about, hooks - what year did they start and where were they (pad only or pad and chines), questions like that.
Anyway I'm lookin forward to the Romp and finally meeting some of you guys in person.
Very interesting stuff -
I'll throw one thought out...my '87 has a very light deck too - you can'y walk on it unless you are right on the edge where the deck meets the sides...as we know, I think I have kevlar decks...but maybe the rest of the hull is normal glass?? I dunno.
Took it out today, 80 up here...a quick run down Saratoga Lake...and cooked the 2.4.
#6 started to detonate. I felt a loss of power. Slowed to and idle and made it back to the launch ramp. Got home, compression test...115-120+ except for #6, about 79. Significant scuffing on the cylinder wall.
So, Jim, I won't have to be multitasking at the Romp...at this rate, only one boat will make it! with a motor, that is...
