Butch - Thanks for the laugh. I only remember where the cup holder was in my jock strap. With that, I think I will turn in for the night before Greg throws me off. - ;) Steve

I was looking at the right side cockpit on the Wing ... not there
I wonder how many were made like that?
Not to stray away from boating, but this thread is about life at the lake. Every once in a while I find a shot like this showing the other activities going on behind the scenes.
More boats later...

Jeff - Great shot of Lake X morning cook, Joe Dumbolten, cleaning fish. He often went fishing either before or after cooking breakfast. I have seen him motor into the slip with a stringer full of bass while still fully dressed in his chef's outfit to include cap. - Steve
Back to the boats. This is another shot taken from the race fleet series - I think Steve said it was prior to the Bahamas 500.

Steve:
Please elaborate on the wing "with the cockpit in the wing"....Was it wood and White circa 1965?
There was a fibreglass wing with a center cockpit from Wisconsin..... a few years later but that is not the one that I saw in the '66 Orange Bowl regatta. The one I recall had a completely flat deck.....no fins...and I swear Dave Craig drove it.
Rich - The one I referred to was definately fiberglass. The overall boat shape was the same as the other glass boats except that the cockpit was located in the center of the wing. Although, it's possible that the wing may have been a little thicker to accomodate the cockpit. There was no cockpit in either sponson. It was either white with brown swoosh or brown with white swoosh. I am quite certain that there was brown somewhere and the brown might have had a faux woodgrain to it. Jim Harkins drove the boat at the Lake and I believe he also drove it in either the 6 hour or 9 hour at the Miami Marine Stadium. Sorry, but I can't place the year except to say it must have been mid 60's. I think it was not nearly as fast as the other boats due to airflow interuption over the wing thus reducing lift. Quite frankly, I think it was abit of a dog. I think Butch Stokes talks to Dave Craig often. Maybe he can ask Dave if he knows of the boat you are thinking about. I gotta tell you Rich, you've got me starting to doubt myself. 40+ years is a looooong time, but I can close my eyes and see Jim Harkins in that boat. I will squeeze my brain to see if something else pops out.............................Nope, nothing else came out. Perhaps Digital Jeff will come across something. Sorry - Steve :o
The year George and I ran the 9 hour I think Odell drove a black wing and won the outboard division. Joe Mandella and a guy named Butch Peterson drove a black Mandella. I remember all of the people you mentioned. Next to driving a wing I would have really loved to do the SK thing. I told Lew Kohler I had been close to 100 mph on the water, but never over. He took me down to the docks at the Miami Outboard Club and put me in Denny Phipps Rayson Craft. When we pulled back up to the dock he said you can never say you have not broken the century mark again! That was in the mid sixties and 100 was fast as hell back then!
How is this for a work platform. The one I flew today has two seats.
I will probably take it to River Ranch next week!
How bout it ya coming?
Charlie - Now that is a beautiful machine! As much as i would like to, I will not make River Ranch. Just alot of family commitments. I certainly envy you for the flying. It's been 11 years now since I did any of that. Best Regards and Most Importantly....Have Fun - Steve
Hi Steve,
Nothing yet on the #43 boat. I'll keep looking.
jeff
Hey digital Jeff - see if you can find a pix of the #49 offshore boat. That boat today is the Fond du Lac County Sheriff's boat that is moored in the FDL Harbor every summer - it should be taken back to it's original state someday before it get's scrapped or something.
Hi Bernie,
I have a shot of #49 right her in front of me, it is in the travelift at the lake. I'll try to find a shot of it running also.
