If it porpoises try moving weight around, Cougars tend to like ET props.

The first photo that I posted above was of my 2003 22MTR with a single 300X and the second photo is of current 22MTR with the twin 300Xs. The tabs were available as a factory option. There was an indentation in the hull where tabs went, so that the tab was flush with the bottom of the boat. My 2004 did not have tabs but the indentation was there. Bruce's boat did not have them but Cougar did make a few changes to their builds over the years or he may not have ordered them when he had the boat built.
Thanks
Gary
This weekend. Playing with a Cougar in heat (it was 110f outside). <a href="https://youtu.be/9MwqWLFkEJY" target="_blank">https://youtu.be/9MwqWLFkEJY
it is boat built in the USA in Kansas with out layup schedules no weights or measures some bow heavy some top heavy some starboard or port heavy all built by trial&Ayr some when sea trialed rolled over nothing compared to cougar boats built is salmon arm bc Canada I whould not want to be in one built in Kansas at high speed very very unpredictable how they handle they don't pack air like boats built in Canada and why they don't they are not balanced one's that were built in USA had nothing to do with cougar tom only thing it was the original cougar company molds no engineering or layup schedules were used how to tell where your boat was built for sure is Canadian built all cougar Toms boats vin start with in the VIN#ZCZ molds were bought buy two guys that wanted to become boat builders one a farmer one a salsa company owner & former checkmate boat rep and the rest is history no longer in business I whould look at set back of engine or outboard has a lot to do with its handling caritaristics also no matter what one does to trim a boat built out of balance it will never be right no matter how many band aids one tries to use its like working on a brand new house built out of square
Hi Gary, We are really enjoying the new boat, really a lot of fun to drive. Mine doesn't have trim tabs but not sure if it needs them, so I am following the previous discussion closely, would they help getting on plane quicker? With the Bravo1 XS 24p prop I haven't yet been much above 81MPH at ~6k, still exploring this limit. Not sure if my 300 has the power for a bigger prop or if going to an over hub type would be better? The SeaStar steering is another area I am concerned with, there is about 3/4" of play in it at the cylinder and turning left at high speed is about impossible, any thoughts? I am going to replace the seal kit and bleed it before going out again.

I would suggest you try checking the fluid level and bleeding the steering first because it might be just some air trapped in the lines or it is low on fluid. I put Bob's transom wedges on my single engine boats for a little extra tuck in and I ran the jack plate up to about 5 on the dial and as the boat started to roll over on to plane I would lower it and start trimming. I ran a Mazco RE4 30 pitch and I saw 92 mph on GPS at about 6,200 rpms and there was more there but I never played with the set-up to see if there was any more there. There was about 300lbs of stereo gear in the bow of the boat as well which didn't help. I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Thanks
Gary
With a 300x on the 22MTR, you should be finding low 90's pretty easily. I've seen 93-94mph in mine with a 300xs and a box stock 26xs prop.
Finding the correct engine height with the Bob's jack will aid greatly for top end runs. On mine, the jackplate at around 5 to 5.5 lets the prop semi surface and allow for those last few 5-7 mph, while still showing 15-20lbs of water pressure. I only jack the motor up this high when making top end runs. Normal boating its at 1 to 2. At lower levels, there is no difficulty with steering tightness, only when jacked up high and flying.
get a bottle fitting,s and hose as pictured screw in into helm fill make sure you have enough fluid in bottle all times and at the end very little to remove less mess turn wheel left and right many times crack the bleed screws hose on them too ends higher than cylinder ,till all full so you think jack front higher than rear let sit 2/ 3 days air will come out leave bottle screwed in helm do it again i did this with twins after i changed hoses that got damaged steering is tight maybe hair of slop which is normal i mean a hair !
Attachment 418882 Here is a pic of my buds Cougar.
It is for sale also.

Go center steering! Faster, better balance, better handling! My centersteer 19 Cougar after winning the Parker Enduro, 2012. 113 mph with stock 300xs.
My center steer 21 Cougar ran 122.44 with a DBR 300x

I know there is 125 mph in this boat. My engine had crazy high (35 lbs) water pressure when I was at 122 mph.... I could go up another 1/8 - 1/4 inch.
My concern is getting too much air underneath this thing. The STV’s and the Mirages have a very small forward sponson openings compared to my 21’ Cougar. I haven’t heard of any other single engine Cougar or Similar hull getting the numbers I’ve already seen. So, I’m really in no rush to push this boat much further. I must say, my DBR 300X is a mean son of a bitch...the boat is balanced perfectly, it takes a set like a G6 jet, and that freaking 2 stroke monster behind me seems to NEVER STOP PULLING. Dave and Joe of DBR Racing, know how to make power.
If I were to run a 34 pitch blade, 125 mph is there... and I am 62 and 290lbs...I need to hire a jockey to run a REALLY big number in the Cougar. Lmao!
Does anyone know of cougar custom boat crash that claimed two people's lives I have been getting private email very veg ?s quess i communicated with this person who apparently passed away in the crash has anyone heard about this apparently I have gotten email from family member asking ?s but do not know the boat and have not heard of cougar boat crashing

Here is one I came across today on Craig's List in Kentucky. It is a 2002 with a 300XS on it. I don't know the boat but it sure looks clean. Check it out!

Here are some photos of an '06 22MTR with a 300X which I believe to be the first one built in Hill City, Kansas. MTR, another member had them in his gallery which I came across today. Does anyone know the boat or where it is today? Post it here.
Thanks
Gary
MTR also had 3 photos of a 27MTR with 3-300Xs on it. I think that is the only triple 27MTR that I have ever seen. I would like to find out more about if anyone has any info, please post it here.
Thanks
Gary
Does anyone know a source for the flat backed rub rail used on Cougars. Mine is a 2004 22 MTR and it has the flat aluminum rub rail that was powder coated white, of course all the powder coat is falling off. I've called Taco marine and searched online quite a bit but I guess Cougar fit the boats with a flat joint which is kind of rare.

I just came across this video which I am pretty sure is your boat:

I am not sure how old it is and it was before Bob changed the colours of the stripes.
Thanks
Gary
Thanks for the pictures. It sure looks like mine. 245 Nikasil powerhead is built. Never got a chance to run it this past season. Also building a carbureted 225 ProMax powerhead this winter. Hoping for a good season in 2019! I love this boat!
