Texas20225,
As stated earlier, "I confuse easily" .. ug...
I thought the 44104A7 was the 'harder' gearset. from previous post you mentioned 44104 "7 means harder"
I inferred that this meant 44104A2 "2 is less hard"
I agree, I don't want to get into swapping propshaft, carrier etc.. I have taken your advice and bought
http://www.ebay.com/itm/261536029659...659%26_rdc%3D1
Hope to see the tools and gears in a week or so.
Good if you bought new hipo gears they would be useless with the fishing motor stuff to go with it:iagree: the set you bought will load in your case there will be three things to pay attention to 1. pinion height which will .025 thousandths,2. forward gear lash which is .021-.026 thousandths and making sure your case does not leak at 15lbs of pressure , there are lots of tools involved building these things it would cost several 100 to buy them all unless you planned on do more work it not cost effective to buy them for you own personal use good luck if you need some help pm me ill send my phone number
Texas20225,
Thanks for the tolerance info.
I have made an investment in most of the tools needed, just waiting for delivery. Already had puller, slide hammer, bearing puller plate. I can borrow some of the others.
This is the 2nd lower on my 2nd boat that has needed repair. Its time I learn if I want to keep playing with these boat toys. ;)
If I fail horribly, then I have learnt the hard way ($$$$) but had fun trying.
Once I get the tools the next challenge is going to be getting the pinion nut off. It was nicely ground when the gears failed and ate themselves.
Attachment 304066Attachment 304067
this looks like a tolerance (lash and clearence) on pinion height may have caused thus failure!! remember drive shaft must be raised up to attain pinion height a preload tool set is required it is also required to get forward gear lash set!! inspect all your bearings for any pitting or flaking you can do it ask all the question you unsure of it will help the cause:cheers: good luck mister,
PS when you get the propshaft out and the 7/8 socket will not fit the nut any more try forcing a metric socket on the nut and bust the nut loose with an impact on the drive shaft with the splined adapter on the top end of course
Thanks for the tips.
After failure i found more water than oil in the case.:nonod:
Just an update.. I received some of my new tools, got the shift shaft out and was able to pull the prop shaft out and disassemble the entire lower.
Needed to use an air chisel to get the pinion nut off. Too rounded from mashed gear bits to get a socket on it.
2 blips of the air chisel and it came right off. (phewwww!)
Pressure washed the insides out and cleaned it up. Dont see any cracks but a nasty gouge out of the inner case from when the pinon let go.
Still crossing my fingers I will get out in the water before the boating season is done up here.
Gents,
Hoping to get a confirmation or point me to resources that will describe.
As per this thread. I have disassembled my lower. I had some scrapes/gouges on the drive shaft where the pinion roller bearing rides.
I am getting a machine shop to build up and grind back to original diameter and fix the gouges.
I have found that this bearing is 31-42647A1 and the shaft is 848449A (pretty common)
I have found that the bearing inner diameter is 1.125" but looking for confirmation that the drive shaft should also be ground back to 1.125? Or should it be some other diameter slightly smaller?
I suspect the 1.125" bearing fits a shaft that has been cut to 1.125" but just looking for that confirmation before I wreck anything!
Paul on the off chance you abandon this mission there is a early 4 hole cle rh rotation on fbc website for sale forum asking $850 plus ride from Quebec so no tax for you.
fbc website?
Ok. Figured it out fastboatscanada.com
trying to have a look. I am interested in a standby unit.
gouges on the drive shaft??? they cannot be welded and re machined they are a very special hardness:nonod: its toast ive looked for some one to fix these for 20 years no one ive heard of i have lot of them that are non repairable the stardard fishing motor drive shaft will work ive install lots of them over the years they are identical
Texas20225,
Is there a way to tell from the driveshaft itself if it is the original CLE driveshaft or already been converted to a standard fishing motor drive shaft? (ie: my propshaft is not the original CLE propshaft perhaps the driveshaft has also already been replaced?)
Paul.
TEXAS2055, All
Its been a hard lesson, and I am still not done rebuilding...
I purchased the gears as recommended above from ebay but when they arrived they were not as advertised. The were NOT 44104A2. Pinion too small and gears were LHR!
(currently shipping back for refund).
I move on..
I can confirm the gears out my CLE lower (as per stamped part #) are:
FWD - 43-44104-2 (uses foward bearing 78172A 1)
REV - 43-44105
Pin - 44103
I have found another advertised 44104A2 kit however after looking at the pictures I am concerned that these are NOT the gears I am looking for. I am looking for your advice/clarification.
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/251469467345
If you look closely at the picture of the reverse gear the part# stamped is 828175.
From my research the Reverse gear with part# 828175 is part of kit 828174A 2? Correct?
Most importantly the forward gear tapered bearing that works with 828174A 2 (30894A 1) is a different size than the bearing that is currently installed (78172A 1)?
(I have tried to contact the seller but no response yet)
Looking for your confirmation and i will stay away from this ebay item.
Regards,
Paul Haig
