Tricks that old racers get up to after retirement

Sunday 15th June , it's Daddy's Day here and I get to see Sam, my youngest and Boo (Tracy) and respective husbands. Suspect most of the reason for putting in an appearance is the fact the pool is up to 27 degrees, usual burgers and chippolatas, sweet corn and wings, expensive cards and Thorntons chocolates!------A magnum of Moët and Chandon Premier Cru from Sam ( she only ever brings good stuff). They promised 24 yesterday but that's been revised to 19 this morning.
Doing a five day trip to south west Ireland tomorrow -----hire a car and stop and smell the roses when we feel the urge. Fly into Cork and take it from there. Tell you tonight how the day went

Yeah dad is well he took up mountaineering in his mid seventies had to be airlifted of the top off a italian mountain last year after not acclimatising enough
did 10,000 feet up on his first day legs turned to jelly so had to be rescued and bought down by chopper. ( things old racers do in retirement !!! ).

Same to you Dave , only time I get breakfast in bed is Christmas morning----always the same thing, ------Smoked salmon, thinly sliced brown bread, a glass of champagne. ( if it's a vintage year, a bit of rumpy-dumpy).

Two of my daughters came for Father's Day , Kimmy the third one was camping over the weekend with two of her three boys.
Sam bought me a new chronometer in a box that must have cost as much as the watch------bloody amazing-------opened my card-----there was $150 towards my old farts ticket.
I did one of my modestly fantastic Bar-Bees, Sweet corn, sausages, Jilly's home made burghers with onions ,tomato, lettuce and dill pickle plus all the side bits ,coleslaw ,taty salad and all the trimmings. New York cheesecake, double cream, fresh strawbs, and like I said, Sam brought the champers (Tattinger).
We played Boules on the lawn all afternoon where Sam came out Champion -----like I said "TODAY-I ATE BEAR"
Thats me in the middle ---Sam on the left------Boo on the right-----who's a lucky boy then?

Hey Jackie you keep bringing those old memories back I can remember in that race they put a boom across the river to try and stop the debris floating down but it broke as the race started which made for a very interesting race.I was still on my learning curve at that time and was driving one of Charlie Shepherds Soggy Moggy Cats` he had just joined the two halves back together after I had broke it in two in a earlier race.The boat was owned by my good friend Peter Thorneywork this time I submarined it`after this race Peter used it to keep chickens in. I have endclosed a picture of one of the other Soggy Moggy Cats just before that one got stuffed in the same race?.

You ain't far off the truth there------let's just say we don't always see eye to eye-----it's not all sweetness and light ALL the time-----but as in most families, the good times far outweigh the others.

You nearly got it right Steve, the boom did not break in the Thames race Don Won. It was the race Peter Inward won in the. Marlboro boat------a dead donkey was just too much for the boom, the thing let go and it became a race of attrician , I think Peter was the last man standing.
My friend Chas was racing the big Jones KT boat------as he was towed in I asked him what went wrong( he should have won hands down) his reply went something like this----------" well there was this handle"""""

Come the end of the race---Mercury had one Mariner still running and OMC had none.
Dons race was rougher than a witches t-t but Len Britnell had come up with a brilliant barrier which held up for the whole race.

Right, that's all the mail taken care of, let me tell you a bit about my trip to the Emerald Isle .
It is mind blowingly beautiful-----took the coast road from Cork to Clonakilty, did the forty k's in two hours-----gently meandering taking in the sights in wonderful sunshine. I have to ask "does it get any better than this?" Sank. A pint of Guinness at this step back in time hotel were staying at, then had pan fried scallops in ginger and correander-----then had Dublin Bay prawn Scampi till I nearly burst, chased down with an extra large Paddys whiskey -----and this is only the first feckin day-----maybe I won't go back to the mainland.(for a while anyhow).

In the early 60s there was an Irish contingent of boat racers that used to come over and compete with us over here. They would travel overnight and arrive at Iver (LMBRC) sat morning-----would race on Saturday afternoon and camp overnight. We would all travel to the Cotswold club at Fairford on the Sunday . Do the race there, then head up to South Staffs (Chaswater if it was a bank holiday) and race there. The Irish would then drive through the night and catch the ferry from Liverpool back home.
Jeff McGratty, Albert Hoy, Sammy Macilroy, Tony Morrelli, are just a few of the names I remember.
Jeff had a factory in Ballymena that made raincoats for Marks&Spencers----the IRA kept setting fire to the place, and the English government would pay a princely compensation and Jeff would have another new boat. Peepers keep closing, sightseeing tomorrow so will be this time before I get to the iPad, MYGGWY, j.

Thanks Johnno, nearly missed you-----there great kids really, when Boo was 17, she was a tidy handful I can tell you, had the fastest Ford Mexico in Sussex----I had the local constabulary ringing my door bell twice a week about the scrapes she was getting into.

Bet very few Americans know that BALTIMORE is named after a beautiful little town on the south west coast of Ireland .
Temp has been 24+ (80) today and I have to say-----Ireland on a fine June day is one of the prettiest places on Gods green earth.
Had a particularly excellent sea food platter for dinner tonight in " the fish kitchen" in Bantry.
Mind you it should have been , it was nearly $ 150 for two.

Was telling you about the Irish lads who used to come across the Irish Sea and race most weekends, what I didn't tell you was they always brought a couple of gallon jugs of their local "POCHINE"-----I suppose it was the Irish equivalent of Tennessee moonshine. After the racing , the Barbee would get lit and the POCHINE would get handed around and the party would begin.
We used to look forward to the Irish coming!!!
Got stacks of piccies, but not sure how folks would react. Piccies are normally as , boring as Seebold winning Bristol time after time, after time, after time, after time,after time!!! Seven of the bloody things if memory serves me right, would have been eight but he pulled the jack plug on the last lap --------I ask you, how stupid is that.?

Well, no comments at all, at all, good , bad or indifferent!! Nobody too enamoured, but nobody too pissed at me either which has to be a step in the right direction. Been hot as Hades today, for the first time in years I drove with both front windows open, (hair blowing free in the wind). No good, I'm KNACKERED, need a cat nap then I'll be OK.
