Jeff - "Racing" a houseboat in the Bahama 500...WOW!''' indeed. Jim Martenhoff ran the boat. Jim was a sporswriter for the Miami newspaper. Amazingly there were 2 houseboats in that race. The mother/daughter team of Gale and Renee Jacoby ran the other Driftercruz houseboat. - Best Regards - Steve

Here we go in the other direction and in black and white. Further identification......(not real sure. hopefully somebody will help or correct me) #41 is Gene Wagner & Dale Thayer. Boat between #43 & #46 might be Roy Ridgell. Additionally, going back to Jeff's picture in Post #495, Boat #42 might be John Stenbeck and Jerry Howard. - Steve

Anybody - Getting off subject for a minute......It seems that somewhere in the past I got the impression that Dr Alexander Lippisch (WWII German Aircraft designer) might have been involved in a Kiekhaefer race boat endeavor that involved a Switzer-like wing boat. Rich Luhrs and Sam Cullis...Do either of you (or anybody) know? - Steve Sirois

Wing type boat, but not like a Switzer. More like an airplane/boat hybrid.

when I get back in the office, I have a few wing shots that i'll post. These are also in color. There are two nearly identical boats, one #700, the other #7000. Both look to be brown and white in color - not exactly attractive...

I forgot about the b&w shot you had - amazing! That is great that you can name practically everyone in the shot. I don't want to got you too excited but I believe I have more shots from that same day/shoot. The shots are mostly indivdual boats and close enough to see faces, although some have helmets with face shields.

Is this the same project that John McCall was involved in? Around 1975 or so he told me a little bit about it but was cautious with his words.He said there were concerns that it might not be accepted as a boat because it did not always touch the water. He did tell me it crashed while he was driving it and the wreckage wound up in Oshkosh,and was hushed up and forgotten. I think T2x knows quite a bit about it.

Seeroy I worked with Bill and Anglo on the Popeye 50' Good time and Bill was picky but a great boss Anyway back in the old PH Factor shop Janish was doing motors for one of the two modified boats we ran.

He told us a story about a Bahamas race where he was behind Aronow with orders NOT to pass Him.

To make a long story short his knees were getting destroyed so screw it so he passed him and when the boat was docked the press surrounded them AND about this time Mr Kiekhaefer asked the press what they were doing to which they replied photographing the winning boat!

He replied this is the SECOND place boat the winning boat is there pointing to Don Aronow the Guy changed the race results on the spot and Doug got the houseboat duty!

I am currently working on a briefing on airplanes at Lake X as well as the people that did both boats and airplanes. I once had a picture of a light airplane takeoff and landing on top of a houseboat at the Lake. My brother was driving the houseboat. Does anyone have that picture for which I would be eternally grateful? - Steve Sirois

I just took another long look at the left picture in post #485..From left to right, I don't recognize the 1st and 2nd guys, the 3rd looks like Mabry Edwards, the 4th is definately Doug Janisch, I don't recognize the 5th guy.
