I had a shop teacher in 9th grade who taught us how to use both a draw knife and a spoke shave. worked very well for shaping wood. Some people just have a knack for using hand tools like that. John McCall was a great hand with a hand plane. I watched him take the hook out of my boat bottom in about a minute with one.

Didnt take em all the way up to”SMITHSONIAN” level of finish, would have taken too long, and the finished article is not desired quite as much as a DUESNBURG PHAETON or a Ming vase!
Interesting that two of the blades are made by MARPLES and mass produced at the end of the nineteenth century to the mid twentieth century. now the last one is blacksmith made from two different steels. beaten and folded to produce a blade only the Japanese swordmakers are capable of making . Was a stone bitch getting the grinding marks out, but the degree of sharp is amazing.
Never heard of the maker before either JAMES HAWORTH .
Turns out James Howarth was a brilliant toolmaker, catering for the joinery trade around 1850. He also made EDGE BLADES, these were used in SPOKE shaves, ADZES and DRAWKNIVES. Two of the finest metals were hardened and forged together, Gave the very finest cutting edge .
The SORBY company bought the James Howarth name in 1933. Just saying !
...nice restoration of those blades....and not a single drop of blood was spilled doing it...;) https://www.screamandfly.com/attachm...7&d=1603747163
Well Well Well. Could it be that maybe Lewis Hamilton can drive a race car rather well after all?
More race victories than any other driver in history ( but that does not mean hes a good driver).
Of course he did have a half decent vehicle. But so did another ten drivers, ( all within half a second)
But what if Vettel or Verstappen, Leclerc or Riccardo had been given the same car!
Wouldnt have made any difference - Hes a better driver than any of them !
Or maybe its just coincidental and a touch of the leprechaun that got him where he is.?
Why does everyone have to belittle his results. ?
You do not win six world F1 championships and 92 Grand Prix by accident .
I just hope when he wins seven F1 championships and 100 races, he decides to go west and race the American circuits .
If he does, better watch out, he might just bring some of that luck with him.
WHAT IF????? RIVA had made race boats in Italy, instead of Cigarette in Florida????
I had this crazy idea of what might have been.
Picked up a beautiful chunk of Burmese Teak and wondered what the hell i was going to cobble that was worthy of the lump.
I have done a couple of what might have been rough outs.
I dont have much going on this weekend and a total LOCKDOWN looks to be on the cards , so dont hold your breath, but watch this space over the next week or so !!
RACING RIVA? NOW WOULDNT THAT HAVE BEEN SOMETHING ELSE?
Was dreaming of Riva’s with mysterious drive and a dozen open exhausts and maybe a bit of a delta wing or tail plane . Polished wood and stainless. Been trying to imagine 1960/70’s Italian architecture. . Riva is such a hard act to follow.
Tell you what, if i think ive nailed it—— you all get to see it——- if i cant do that,——- then you wont.
Deal ?
THOUGHT LONG AND HARD BEFORE I DIVED INTO THE ITALIAN OFFSHORE RACE BOAT BY RIVA !
Would have to be architectural with positive lines without edges . Curves and not corners. Beautiful timber, Polished not epoxy.
After a day and a half , i can say the results SO FAR are “Promising” !
Just a tad excited , things don't usually flow this good, so im waiting for the second shoe !
Was tempted to do progress piccie, but thats a no no , so you all have to just sit tight till im good and ready.
Anybody want to bid on one or more before they're even made? The fleet consists of three deep vees and a cat in polished Burmese teak, stainless and polished alloy.
There can never be any more, thats it. Just four of them, around the four mark. EACH.
I think the Indy car seats are a lot closer in competitive trim, then the big discrepancy dollar differences between F1 teams. Speed cost money.
Therefore your driving skills are more relative to a win in the Indy circuit.
In the USA we would like to see Alonso, Vettel and Hamilton, come and race Indy cars.
Mark Webber is welcome too.
The Scottish bagpipes will be playing, in memory of a fellow country man and past Riva boat owner.
90 years young, and 7 Bond films to his credit, 007 his legacy.
Sean Connery - Mr. Bond, James Bond - has motored off the blue planet, toward's greener pastures.
