1988 was the beginning of the UIM F-3000 class.
Lots of problems with a 20 inch shaft and the production gear case.
UIM changed the rules and you could use racing midsection/gear case like in this UIM F-3000 picture.

OMC COMMERCIAL OUTBOARDS / WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?
Evinrude & Johnson motors had, of course, been used in commercial applications almost from their beginnings. However, it wasn’t until the late 1970’s that OMC began a focused effort to produce outboards designed specifically for the riggers of commercial use. Starting with the 2-cylinder, 50hp model in 1979, these motors became highly regarded as tough and reliable working outboards around the globe, usually in remote rural locations. Over the following years, OMC continued to increase its attention on Commercial motor development, extending the range of models, and working to increase performance, dependability and durability.
ADDED TOUGHNESS - In general, most commercial motors were manual tilt, rope start and tiller steer featuring: special fuel filters, stainless steel lined water pumps, special paint, additional corrosion protection, stainless fasteners, beefed-up gearcases, heavy-duty connecting rods and stainless props. All of this was designed to handle constant day-in-day-out use - in many locals running in heavily-silted, or muddy water. Styling was usually on a par with rec motors since many commercial operators took great pride in their motors. It wasn’t unusual to see hand-made fabric motor covers protecting the hoods when the motors were not in use. (See specific details in the photos of the 1986 Evinrude & Johnson catalogs.)
THE JAPANESE INVASION - Notably, when Yamaha began attacking the South & Central American markets they targeted the Johnson & Evinrude commercial motors – a market segment that OMC motors dominated. Yamaha’s tactics included price dumping and bribing local officials to ignore their smuggling motors into countries using an offshore freighter in remote locations to avoid paying import duties.

SeaWay inherited or bought whatever was left before OMC collapsed and BRP acquired it. The era of the early 1970s to mid 1980s is really hard to understand with OMC racing. Was it limited to only dealers and people with deep pockets? Mercury dealers were pretty secretive about hi-perf stuff but OMC ran their program almost like Area 51 (pun intended). It was really difficult to acquire hi-perf catalogs from Merc but downright impossible with OMC. I concluded that racers lucky enough to get V4 Stranglers or Stingers were getting hand-me-downs from the OMC racing programs. 2nd Effort was an attempt by OMC to replicate what worked for Mercury with Garbrecht at the helm.
