Mark was explaining how it's possible to pick up a ten /fifteen year old 28/32 foot tunnel offshore for no real money------lets just say it was originally designed to run 100/110 mph. Now let's take out the power units and install a pair of 1500 HP units-----------we now have a boat that will run over 150 mph.
Whilst the owner will throw a ton of money at a custom paint job and not bat an eyelid, I'll bet a pound to a pincha, none of those guys ever put a straight edge on the bottom, or did any stress checks.
Simple fact is ten/twenty year old boats that have had a hard life, that were designed to run around 100 mph don't take kindly to being pushed to 150/190 mph in one hit.
Its a very grey area here------these boats are not racing, so they do not have to confirm to any APBA rules--------maybe some local coast guard rules, but that's about it.
No, I do not know the answer----------too many rules kill the pleasure, not enough is highly dangerous.
Anyway------rules are meant to be stretched to the limit.
Again-----just who should make the rules?
If you ask the worlds fastest man on water (KEN WARBY) and the fight he has had with the UIM and the APBA, he will tell you, they are incompetent !
What the hell is an Englishman doing even commenting on boating accidents in the USA ? Trying to make sense out of a very tragic series of accidents, see if they can be avoided in future, that's all!
As an aside-------miss GIECO is twenty years old, will probably run 200 mph on a good day, but it's been a very slow gradual process over the years, speeds have been increased and hull design modified slowly to suit the increase in power, slowly, slowly, you all know what I mean!
Dont know whether to post this or not, not very comfortable with it, most of my friends and family are boat racers, I mean no offence to the bereaved families--------but having read some of the posts, I felt the need to comment
