Agreed! They're gonna get even lighter and smaller, and with bigger superchargers. Just need lower units to match for surfacing applications. I see the new diesel outboard even has turbos under the cowl.

First..I like your notice..:)..Thanks.
Great question and I don't think anyone know the 100% correct answer. My experience with OMC racing was they did not like contracts..
When Molinari signed with OMC the winter of 1976-77 I did order a brand new UIM OE class boat from him. Picked it up at his factory in Como, Italy early 1977.
Renato never asked me what racing outboard I was going to use but I think he was pretty sure it was an Evinrude.
When he found out I raced the new Molinari with a VP-Konig outboard he got extremely upset and tried to force me to pay a penalty for doing so.
He told me he could only sell boats to OMC drivers..
I told him to tell OMC the deal with me..but OMC never said one word to me about my VP-Konig deal 1977..
They know exactly why I did so..
In Europe all the other boat builders sold tunnel boats to any race driver no matter what outboard they preferred.

Had to be the ugliest aft cowling Burgess ever made?
Especially with the stripes. Water Zebra, can I ask who are? It sounds like we raced r the same era. I raced at the stadium several times. They put me I a Switzer FE boat one race to support Switzer. The ugliest ride I ever had. If you want confidentlonality, send your id to jschubert19j@gmail.com.BTW who is 2US. Thanks, John Schubert
@WaterZebra
Ugly or not..but there is an untold story about David Burgess and Roger Jenkins 1984..
Roger raced his ( ugly) Burgess above the first part of 1984..he won a race with that boat. I think Holland GP.
Something really bad (I guess) happened in the relationship between David Burgess/Roger Jenkins mid season 1984..
I have asked David Burgess..but he did not tell me why..same with Roger..
Before the F1-V8 race in Liege, Belgium 1984 Roger got himself a brand new Hodges and painted in the Carlsberg's colors..
The pictures are from the race in Belgium and Rogers new Hodges..!!
Liege was also Rogers last F1-V8 race..he retired after Liege 1984.
Today David Burgess is probably the only one who knows the 100% correct reason..

I like the advantage of having my call sign only on this site. You raced in an era before my time. I entered series racing in the IOGP phase. Never raced Parker or Havasu and always wanted to drive graveyard shift (night time) in 24hr Paris race. Never had anything provided to me and paid my own way.
@WaterZebra
First, of course you have the right to keep your Screen name private.
Please..John Schubert use messenger for private questions.
Back to Roger Jenkins "ugly Burgess" 1984...(I do not think it was ugly..Roger was really fast with his ugly boat)..
To make this correct..the first picture is Rogers Burgess with the 1984 rear "ugly" cowling in Stockholm..the second picture is Rogers Hodges in Liege, Belgium with the rear "ugly" cowling.

Didn’t mean to upset anyone, but it’s difficult to respond at times when you don’t know who it is you are responding to. I suggested responding to my email address for privacy. I certainly wasn’t going to broadcast anyone’s identity. Insofar as messenger Lars, that’s Facebook which I don’t use. Was hacked years ago. And , have never had success with Pam ( private messages).
I guess that I will with hold posting. My name isn’t private & if I don’t know who is posting, I will keep my opinion & info to myself

I am just a small time privateer racer from the 60s and 70s that you probably never noticed back then. I enjoyed some limited success during the time when OPC racing was still possible for a guy like me. QUOTE=John Schubert;3409410]Especially with the stripes. Water Zebra, can I ask who are? #12 Fabrizio Bocca - Molinari/Castrol Oil/ Evinrude V8 and #18 Renato Molinari - Molinari/Martini/Evinrude in the Stockholm GP 1984.

Just wondering if that Castrol Molinari of Bocca's is the one that came apart out from under him, which happened in 1984.
Well..I have never heard about that but this is from Liege, Belgium later 1984.
The start and you can see #12 Bocca and a few minutes later the really bad accident happened between Bocca & Tom Percival.
Not sure how much damage was done on Bocca's Molinari boat in the very bad accident but he did not race in London GP a few weeks later.
Lots of misinformation out there..!!
This is from my Svera.se page..more about the accident there..!!
The 1984 start of the F1-V8 race in Liege, Belgium. (picture below)
The #12 Molinari/Castrol/Evinrude boat is Bocca and it looks like Roger Jenkins and Tom Percival is having a slow/bad start.
The crash between Bocca and Percival is just minutes away.

..but let me guess.. This is #15 Alan Nimmo in his Molinari/Castrol/Johnson V8 1983.
Alan purchased Renato's titanium boat from 1982 and raced it 1983.
There was some issues with the glue in this titanium boat and Alan had same water leak problems.
Alan retired after the 1983 F1-V8 season and I did never see this boat race again.
As I said before..plenty of misinformation out there and I am trying hard to get the OMC racing history correct.
Thanks for clicking in here.

This #165 Molinari is the same boat as Alan Nimmo's #15 Castrol boat above..Renato raced the new titanium Molinari/Martini/Evinrude V8 1982. It did have some glue issues for Renato also 1982
The cost to build was astronomical..and Renato went back to more traditional material boats for the 1983 season.
Alan Nimmo a wealthy Scottish dentist purchased Renato's titanium boat and raced it 1983.

Alan Nimmo was extremely friendly and when I lost my rear boat cowling in the Stockholm GP 1983..my day was over..
First picture.
Well..not..because Alan offered me to use his rear boat cowling from his titanium Molinari..(I think his engine blow up)
I asked the Officer of the day to switch to #15 instead of #8..no time to change number.
The next picture is me with Alan's rear boat cowling..You can clearly see it was way shorter than my Burgess cowling.

Lars, could you feel any handling difference at all between your original Burgess rear cowling and the shorter borrowed Molinari cowling.
Great question..first here is a picture of my friends and one OMC technician helping to install the Molinari boat cowling on my Burgess..lots of duct tape was needed..:)
I was surprised how well it fit..only a bit to short..
We got done just seconds before the next heat start.
If I remember correct the boat felt "a bit nervous" at top speed but not a big issue.
Great memories from my home GP.

Bob Herring also raced an aluminum V8 boat and I read it was very expensive to tool up and build. Sponsored by a potato chip company! O'Gradys I think.
Here he is..in his aluminum F1-V8 boat in Minneapolis 1984.
https://www.screamandfly.com/attachm...7&d=1701658563
I wonder what happened to these aluminum wonder boats? One thing for sure, metal scrap prices being what they are, the hulls were not burned like wooden versions?
They were built during "pre capsule" era..........Molinari was lucky enough to recover some of his costs by selling his hull. I have no idea what happened to Hering's boat?
I don't think Hering's metal boat was a winner 1984 like his wooden Molinari was 1983.
I have one more picture of the #45 metal boat from 1984..coming next.
PS..not sure but Hering's metal boat was probably not titanium as Renato's was.

I guess Bob Hering's #45 O'Grady's Chips sponsored boat was only "part aluminium" when you read the Powerboat Magazine report.

LONGEST BOAT JUMP EVER - ‘LIVE AND LET DIE’
The jump scene in the 1973 James Bond film ‘Live and Let Die.’ was the longest boat jump in the world...ever.
THE INSIDE STORY - On Friday 13 October 1972, the Live And Let Die production team started shooting on the film’s iconic boat chase. The sequence sees Bond, played by Roger Moore, having just set fire to a drug factory, evade the bad guys by stealing a speedboat and heading out into the Louisiana Irish Bayou.
TRASHING BOATS & MOTORS - There were 26 boats used in the sequence, leaping across roadways and skidding across lawns. By the time the shoot was complete, 17 boats were destroyed along with numerous Evinrude outboards. 21 Evinrude's were supplied for the movie. 3 came back but were so badly damaged they were scrapped. The director insisted the engine had to be running for the take of the boat smashed through the cop car and 3 motors were completely burned up to get the shot. In the lower left photo the boat front was smashed with a sledgehammer.
For the first part of the chase, Bond drives a Glastron GT-150 powered by an Evinrude 135hp V4, then, after a bullet punctures the fuel tank, he swaps it for a Glastron CV-19. For close-ups of Bond traveling at speed, Moore learned to drive the boats but didn’t emerge unscathed. During rehearsals, he drove the CV-19 into a boathouse on the shore, luckily only fracturing a tooth in the accident.
BOAT & MOTOR SETUP - As mentioned above, this shoot started in 1972. During shooting, the motors, with 1972 mounting brackets, kept ending up in the swamp. So, 1973 motors were used for the final shots. Some OMC vets recall that entire midsection, stern brackets and components were sand-cast rather than die cast. Much stronger for this application. Also notable is that jump boat featured a ‘center steering’ setup and 2x4s on the bottom of the hull.
THE JUMP – October 15th, saw stuntman Jerry Comeaux perform an incredibly hairy boat-jump over Highway 39 at Crawdad Bridge - and over Sheriff J. W. Pepper and his car. To test the stunt was safe, the crew recreated the levee and the police car, even making a J.W. Pepper out of bamboo. The idea was that if the stunt could be performed three times without mishap, it would be safe to put an actor in there. A crowd gathered to watch the stunt. On the second take Comeaux’s boat took off on a 40ft leap, hit the water, skidded in the wake of another boat and flipped up onto the bank - but fortunately no-one was hurt. The impact of the completed stunt surprised even stuntman Comeaux. “When I finally saw film of the leap it scared the hell out of me,” he remembered.
