I drag raced my pleasure boat at 15 races last year. Id bet 95% of people on this site are pleasure boaters. So perfomance boats are not pleasure boats? 21ft is small to me, huge to the guy in the pond skipper...Weird how you state those people who prefer smaller performance boats with two stroke are the ones who do so much complaining about non two stroke, when they supposedly have what they want?....Think about it....A simple conclusion can be drawn from a non bias mind.
Really po's my buds when on very similar flats hulls and same load, my old antiquated 225 opti out performs their new 25k 225 Pro xs 4s engines. So, when equal boats run side by side there is some angst from the 4s guys as to the outcome. They still like them, just not as much.
Japan outboard makers have been grooming the U.S. for years to accept four strokes. Honda sold more people on them with their boat show test tanks that had a 40 Honda sitting there idling all day and sipping gas like a 4 h.p. I cut my teeth working on two strokes starting in 1980 and I had a blast racing OPC boats for a few years. But, I have to admit now that I am much older, I am 100% impressed by my Yamaha F50 that is ten years old and has never coughed, not once. It uses no oil nor 'makes' oil. The gear oil never turns black. I am about to change the timing belt just because it is time although the belt looks like new. I feel like I have gotten my moneys worth! If I felt the urge to have another hot rod boat I would go find an old cross flow and rebuild it and find an old Allison to put it on. You have to understand the boating public no longer tolerates those old unreliable motors of yesteryear.
I heard there was a few shows with a yam in one tank and the equivalent e-tec in another idling all day well the e-tec did but the yam used up the fuel first as expected.
As the japs had no epa 2 stroke tech they pushed the 4 stroke, funny that the epa regs stalled there so outboard dont need cat cons like stern drives, anyway Merc rode that wave and boosted 4 slugs have meant another huge jump in reliable power.
Weight doesnt seem to matter any more. ( super thin castings help..how long will they last?)
Still interested to see what happens to the 4,5 and 6 engined centre consoles at 10 years and repower time?
That omc 150 HO was a HOT engine. it had way more than 150 hp in my guestimate. Was a fuel miser as well as a light one too.
I’d like to see a four stroke that is comparable to the drag motor in weight and performance. I’m sure they would be so expensive that most people could not afford them.
Pop the lid off a high performance PWC and you will see what a powerhead might look like. But they will never make a similar outboard because there is almost no market. If someone did, I expect they could sell a dozen or so each year, about like Merc did at the end of the 300 drag era.
My opinion only, the high performance PWC is what has replaced the small performance boats so many of us grew up with.
