Good news. If gasket was weeping you would typically see a cylinder with a drop of 10 or 20 lbs or more. I would NOT pull head at this point. Others mentioned a few things to check, like thermostats. Has impeller been changed recently? Is engine on a jack plate?
Water pressure gauge is a must have on 2 strokes. I suggest you put that near top of the list of things to do. It will be very helpful as you continue to work thru this issue you have.

Typically engines run within 10° of thermostats 130-150 in normal climate. Engines need to be warmed up, and not used as a tug boat, or they will run warm.
Water pressure doesn't work after thermostats. It is spliced into the block overflow hose that dumps out at poppet cover. Comes off the top of the block .Attachment 518518
If you don't like that spot. You can drill and tap your exhaust divider. Attachment 518520

You would know poppet was bad: if your cowl has water in it= bad diaphragm= leak out of poppet cover. Or if your running low water pressure at idle, or too high pressure at higher rpm= stuck poppet. You could remove diaphragm and inspect the poppet behind it.
Your water pump looks to be run dry, very possible for that to cause a overheating problem.
some manuals maybe clean up the grounds on the ignition? :cheers:
I agree water pump looks like it has been run dry. I have seen many times new impellers installed in burnt housing. Not a good move. Chances are good the pump base under the plate is melted as well. Melted pieces should be replaced.
Manual states inspect impeller every season replace every other. In salt and/or shallow sandy water impeller should be replaced every year.
Thank you everyone on this scream and fly forum. My mercury is now running great again. The prognosis for no power under load was a bad switch box. The prognosis for the over heat alarm was in fact over heating.. weak water pump. I enjoyed many hours on the boat this weekend. can't wait to enjoy this motor for many more years to come as I will become more familiar with it.
On the agenda next is Chris carson reeds and stuffers. Is there any gaskets I should have on hand when doing that job.
