LOL:D good ol Gary H .I would not of thought of him for 20 Bucks he was a piece of work wonder where he is today still peddling Yam's:eek:
Thanks for the continued support!
For the curious here is pic of my CLE lower part/cast# 1685-847901-C, (can't find this in parts lookup ?)
Attachment 303631
I have checked with micrometer the propshaft where bearing carrier bearings ride is 1 3/16" (for the curious, drive shaft is 7/8")
Unfortunatley I do not have my carrier with me right now, So now I need to check if it is a "MONSTER" carrier with 1-3/16 diameter shaft or the 1-3/16 diameter hipo shaft with dual bearings stacked in the carrier with long bearing surface
I do know that the carrier has a number on it "816954-3" but I have not found any references.(see previously attached pictures)
I will get some pictures and send them along.
TEXAS20225,
I am heeding your advice that this process is not just a drop in of parts and voala.. it takes know how and experience setting up gaps, torque, using the right tools etc.
I am still not convinced I will tackle this myself. I just want to be armed with all the data I need so that if/when I take this to the shop I can be confident they know what the #!&% they are doing themselves.
Makin progress, that confirms 44104A 7 will not work with those parts.
Alright, came home from work and pulled the reverse gear off the bearing carrier.
Here is what I see!
Attachment 303640Attachment 303641Attachment 303639
Referse Gear: 43-44105 -> 43-18445
Roller Bearing: B-1916 (1" depth)
I still need to get my hands on a shift shaft bushing tool so I can get the shift shaft out and then the propshaft and investigate the forward gear part #.
 Paul, Pete yes they will!!!!!! the 44104- 7 means the reverse gear bearing hole is 1.45 or so in diameter and it is harder(7 represents hardness) then fishing motor gear sets !!you will note the 44104 is the same number on a lot of ratcheting gearcase's that are 1:87 ratio. the big reverse Gear/ bearing hole does not know that the shaft is 1/16 smaller in diameter it will work i promise! however it will not work in reverse IE: standard fishing motor reverse gear/ bearing on the big Shaft the gearset are identical except for hardness and hole in the middle. i have had many ,many fishing motor reverse gears ground out to work in big shsft lower its a piece of cake . Paul the casting number in every singel case Mercury ever made do not match the parts books the casting number makes building case's for a guy like me a snap this how i discovered that left and right case's were interchangeable they both had the exact same casting number duh !!!! ANY i said ANY ratcheting gearset fishing motor or other wise will fit that case 2.1 or 1.87 you just wont have the rear drain unless you buy an after market, Too bad you aint down here in Texas i have you floatin in bout 2 hours or less and furnish the parts
TEXAS20225,
I guess that makes sense that the 44104 (1 1/4" shaft diameter??) would fit with a 1 3/16" shaft as the shaft surface does not meet the reverse gear?
From reviewing manuals it appears that the forward gear also houses roller bearings thus the inner diameter does need to match my existing 1 3/16" shaft.
I have been trying to lookup 43-44105 parts and to find the matching forward gear but not having any luck.
Knowing that I have a 1 3/16" prop shaft and currently have a 43-44105 reverse gear, can we figure out which forward gear I need? (All my gears are shot)
For the price of a new Lower unit it would be cheaper to fly out to Texas and get this done! HA!
From Bobby's explanation I would say you can use any 44104 gear set you like (assuming you want a 1:87 gear ratio).
yes any ratcheting gear set, the diameter or the hole in reverse is dictated by prop shaft diameter as you see in this blown CLE case someone allready put fishing motor gears in it, and they will last a long ,long time if set up right gear set are numbered as in order 2.1 set are 44100,44101,44102, forward, pinion, reverse 1.87 are 103,104,105 forward ,pinion ,reverse
shift shaft tool on ebay are plentiful heres one

Gents,
Yes, I want to maintain 1.87 ratio. I don't want to re-prop.
However, Still trying to follow above, and I confuse easily... HA!
Given I have 44105 Reverse gear, to maintain 1.87 ratio you are stating I need 44103 forward, 44104 pinion?
Trying to find gear kit online with part numbers above is not successful. Can you please point me in the right direction?
Thanks in advance.
Paul
Stock gear set is 43-44104A2 (superseded to 44104T2), and the number you have for the hi perf set 44104A7.
here is a set on ebay log in to ebay type this number in your browser it is the whole set most likly just like you had in it it 200 buck it has dog all three gears and carrier pull the trigger

Thanks guys.
I have placed order for tools.
For the extra $$ I will probably go for a brand new 44104A7 (7 = harder?) plus I believe that this kit comes with shims which I will need to setup correctly.
However my experience trying to get Mercury parts to Canada is very expensive.. (thats a rant for another time)
Thanks again
Paul
