Hi Lasse - Is that article a misprint? It says that the engine was registered at 232 mph. Did they mean to say 232 hp? The article is from 1975 and not even top fuel hydros were running at 232 mph back then.Quote:

In the mid 70’s Switzer Craft introduced a GL-20, it was a performance family boat. The Gl-20 was only made in 1976 and 77. In 1978 they redesigned the GL-20, made it a foot longer, a few styling changes, and redesigned the hull to have the outside running surface of the hull cup downward a little bit.
The reason for this was this outside part of the hull was high and dry at top speeds, and Dave Switzer wanted to compress some of that air under the hull and create some tail lift (less drag).
The changes were a success and the GL-21 was a top performer in its day. It was used as a test boat for OMC when they came out with the new 235hp outboards. A stock GL-21 would run in the high 80’s with the 235. With a power lift transom and the right prop one would run in the low 90mph.

The Evinrude brand is gone..but the 150E-TEC H.O. is still kicking..
Yesterday the classic Offshore Race Roslagsloppet was run and the two brothers Melin won the W-150 class with the #W-16 Twister Cat/Evinrude 150 E-TEC H.O.

Today at the Great Lakes Grand Prix team 🔸Dirty Money Offshore Racing🔸had an unfortunate accident.
Thank God above that both Rusty and Bill are okay. The boat unfortunately is not ok. It suffered catastrophic damage.
We’d like to issue a huge thank you to everyone who has reached out to see how the guys are doing and to lend a hand. And for those of you who are wondering, we are not throwing in the towel.

What isn't said about Walin by OMC is that Walin made another run in the Starflite IV and blew it over. If I remember right, Walin had to lay down in the thing to drive it. He was very badly injured in the accident and did not live long after that. OMC got very quiet about kilo record attempts until Bob Wartinger set the 176 mph record with an Evinrude V8 many years later.Quote:

Gerry Walin set the World Outboard Speed Record of 131 mph in 1966
Walin, 26, a University of Washington student piloted Starflite IV, a 17-foot hydroplane powered by an Evinrude 100-S V4 to a world record of 130.929 on March 16,1966. That record was broken in 1973 by Mercury at 136.4 mph. Walin was taken to the Parker Community Hospital and then to Phoenix hospital, in critical condition from spinal, thoracic and leg injuries, and underwent heart surgery.
The cause of the accident was not known. Jack Leek, director of racing for OMC said, “conditions that morning were perfect for the attempt, and the water was glassy smooth.”

I saw the video from that 1974 attempt (3 camera angles) and the boat went completely out-of-frame on all; I would say that 35 - 40 feet is an extremely conservative estimate. Evinrude spent about a month trying to locate all the pieces but some of Starflight 4 is still down there. My parents were there (Jim & Irene) and as long-time friends of Gerry through APBA racing, were horrified by the crash. I believe this was "the" event that triggered my father to become the Safety Commissioner to improve racing safety.
