This is what I understand, correct or not.
teams are quitting because of the new motors, it isn't just a bolt on. They need new boats to handle the extra weight. New boats mean new plugs, new molds etc. not cheap, and neither are the motors.
Typical merc.
I hear it is Christenson (sp?) at merc who hates two strokes. So he is shoving these peices of sh1t down everyone's throats. Merc is so out of touch, around here to don't see them at all anymore. Bean counters and non boaters calling the shots.

PS. It is total bull**** that they cannot produce motors because of the epa. They make these race only. And what about motors for export? Canada Australia etc... We don't have epa.

200xs is compliant wordwide, why dont they use that?

Merc only ship non compliant engines to South America AFAIK so miss out on the whole of Asia, no law in Australia yet but will be soon

Every fisherman in Asia has a 2 stroke Yamaha because they can..
Merc has a good hold on governments boats in Asia but nothing with consumers and BRP nothing
Thailand has all been Yam in large engines although I saw one of their plywood tubs the other day with 4 Verado's

I agree that whenever the rules of the game changes, it ultimately results in more $$$ out of the racers pockets or the sponsor's pockets which all may eventually end up in the demise of the race team.

heck, just to be competitive each year, you have to be changing something in the race boat if not the race boat itself

I am watching what Sweden's XCat team is doing. They seem to be wanting to race their current hull with the new 400ROS motors

let's see what they do to their race boat and also see how their new setup does on the race course. From what I hear, we'll have a mix bag of 280s and 400ROS in the 2016 race year, while 2017 requires all racers to be 400ROS compliant.

I'm not an expert in hull design by any means, but it would seem that to carry the additional 500lbs of extra engine weight, that a cost effective way to continue racing would be to widen the hull to allow more lift on these XCat hulls. But something tells me to truly carry the added weight, the boat has to be lengthened to something like 32 feet as well

This would make the DougWright 32 become more effective in XCat.

Predator30 Race Cat can handle the additional weight and be competitive

Interesting on the USA EPA restriction being BS. I'll never understand why a company that already has an excellent lightweight engine option on hand does not put a little more effort into making it a true worldwide platform including USA. If you assembled a small swat team at Merc to look at the cost of making the 200XS Gen 2 work in every country with a 1 year warranty I think even the peckerwood bean counter on the swat team would be pleasantly surprised.

Widening the tunnel will surely help carry the boat but making CG changes for the extra weight on the transom will play the main and key roll!
Interesting and sad to continue seeing how they really feel these are the way of the future for racing.....:eek: I'm sure they will make them work at some point but at what cost....:confused: JMHO!

200xs does work/is legal in every country from the day they made version 1
the words 2 stroke and 4 stoke do not exist in any government rules as they are only interested in pollution not technology

That's what I keep saying...I'd be happy to take one for the teams and dispose of those crappy, old, yucky 280's for them. In fact, I'll even give them my address for expedite shipping quickly.

sure, its the zero w/tee thats the issue and they have been very reliable so I cant see the issue for merc

forgot about the CG

to fix the CG, while the 400ROS motors are bolted on the transom, determine the CG using a single sling boat lift

if CG is off, move the canopy forward or back using (2) 200 lb racers

place the fuel tanks' middle right on the boat's new CG such that even when the fuel is being used up, the CG won't be altered.

I think the widening of the hull and moving the canopy is still cheaper than building a new boat

Exactly.

Why sell a 18000 dollar motor when you can sell a 45000 dollar motor. Mercury has seen what happens in offshore, they sell a 200k engine package times two. You need to sell a lot of outboards to offset those numbers. But from what I am seeing is that market it dying.
I can't see how they can't sell the 200xs and 300xs motors for a reasonable price, with warranty. Hell they can sell the four stroke 150, that is a new design, with new tooling, and infinitely more complex and make money on them for 10 k. Drop the price and the volume will skyrocket. They keep saying we are a declining market..... They are the reason.
The other that gets me is they stoping production of parts that are actively being used, . 280 and s3000 blocks.
Mercs arrogance, privateers are now making replacement parts, better parts, for less money without economies of scale they operate with and are still making money.

I predicted a while back the engines will get bigger and then the boats and then everyone may as well run sterndrives
If you want to blow up a class just change the engines and stop supplying the old ones.
