Thanks John, Was just wondering in my own mind how the rotory sounded in relation to the V4/V6 and V8....I can only imagine what your hearing is like these days after having to test these things in a 12x12 room!!! LOL

Do you know if they are running stock EMM/ECUs or "cracked"/ "jail broken" ones to get rid of the rev limiter?

This one is a 75hp, 814cc. With updated SST-60 cowling. These boats run really well.
OMC FR-31-M..
This UIM F3 pure race-engine is for sale Sweden.
The FR-31-M race engine (I believe) was never sold by OMC in USA for the Mod 50 class.

Hind sight being 20/20 it would have been better for anybody who was interested in racing to keep all outboard companies at arm's length when it came to the hardware and not be at the mercy of some pencil pusher. We should have focused on aftermarket mid sections, engine components and propellers. The term "stock" was a myth from the beginning.
Days before OMC went under, I knew a former OMC service school tech that was teaching a vo-tech marine school. I was talking to him one day and he was all excited because he was going to get one of the rotary outboards delivered to the school. One would have to wonder if it would have had a powerhead under the cover or not. Anyway he never got it after his contact told him it was on the shipping dock to be put on a truck. If that is true, that's pretty sad.
To the best of my knowledge, Charlie Strang gave Bob Zipps 2 of them. He still has them and told me he was going to give them to some old timey museum. BRP had 2 others that they told me were going to their museum in Quebec. Sea Way Marine has the old unit that was in Engineering. There is one more black exhaust manifold somewhere which I thought was on tour for the Evinrude 100 yr. tour. I'm not sure if BRP still has that one or not. I also know of 2 photo units, no powerheads; I asked for one when BRP quit making Evinrudes, but was told NO. If someone else knows more I would appreciate knowing.
How does somebody "give" R&D prototypes to someone? Only way Charlie could pull that off is if the equipment was completely absent from either the OMC or BRP asset books. Not sure that Zipps has an iron clad grip on them. An example of disputed property planned for a museum would be "Sue" the restored T Rex skeleton. It's currently the property of a federal court pending the outcome of the ownership dispute.
BRP wasn't in the picture at the time. I'm sure racing stuff wasn't on any books as assets. Besides, as CEO Strang could pretty well do as he pleased. The one w/o the gearcase was actually parked in front of Don Kunney's garage door as a retirement present from Jim Nerstrom. I don't know the details on how Zipps got them, but Strang told me himself he had given 2 to him.
Well.. OMC - Evinrude was using outboard brackets already 1956..

Being there at THAT TIME, Charlie DID have that power. He controlled where each $ was spent. His entire immediate staff was very PRO racing. I guess you could conclude to the demise of OMC. Very unfortunate. When Green Marine was the owner, Charlie told me in the pits at Kankakee that all the tooling was worn out. I guess the Rotary & V-8 programs took away from progressive development.
John,
wasn’t poking holes at either program, as I was an OMC driver & believed in the racing program. Having said that, don’t you feel that the rotary race program(yes I know about the proposed outboards & the successful snowmobile programs & I had a Trocoid splg, on my desk, the costs vs development of saleable products was out of balance. Of course, buying the boat companies to stay in step with Merc also didn’t help. And, BTW, st the time of the rotary program, my dad worked at Curtis Wright who had the rights to some segments of the rotary markets. He was even invited to Waukegan to give his/CW opinion on the trocoid coating.
Speed cost $$$$$...
In the executive suites, the decision of marketing via Racing has a cap ceiling, where the development and racing expenses exceeds the PR value in generating Sales of the corporate retail products.
Reading some of the posts, maybe Charlie (with racing enthusiasm like Carl Kiekhaefer) exceed the cap ceiling threshold.
Similar to the days of … Kiekhaefer vs OMC … Ford vs Ferrari … Detroit’s Big 3 racing in NASCAR. But some brands have enhanced popularity and sales via performance like Edelbrock and Holley.
The rotary race program had one and only one goal; beat Mercury. As soon as Strang had the V-6, he dropped the rotary like a hot potato. It took several years of additional development for the V-6 to equal the rotary in HP and never did match low speed torque. I believe if the same effort was put towards developing production rotaries, a much different result would have happened. At the time, there was 4 engineers in the rotary program in Waukegan. 2 of them were assigned to the race program. I believe Strang's passion for racing and his ego to "beat those black bastards" overshadowed good business judgement. The results speak for themselves.
The cap was certainly exceeded for OMC. I didn't and don't see any PR benefit for OMC in racing. Mercury has always been the high performance product. Johnson and Evinrude were fishing motors. In my opinion, no amount of racing was going to change that. While the rotary generated enormous amount of interest and spectators, it wasn't done to improve the product, only to beat Mercury. Just my thoughts.
Charlie rose from kid racer to corporate leader.
Charlie Strang joined the Outboard Marine Corporation. He began as director of marine engineering, eventually climbing the corporate ladder to president and general manager in 1974, chief executive officer in 1980, and chairman of the board in 1982. Charlie retired in 1990.

CUTE GIRL / WRONG DECAL
Back in the 1970’s, it wasn’t unusual to get pre-production outboards for the photo shoots. As a result, the styling may have been missing the final tweaks like this 1975 Stinger 75 with just one stinger name and not the 5 stinger names stacked as on the final version. The PR Department released their photos to magazines quickly following the shoot because of printing lead times. So, this one slipped by, got published and caused some confusion as to what the correct styling actually was. The girl, however, was an actual production model.
No tweaks required!
Second picture is the correct decal.

I can't recall if the rotary was ever run in Europe or Africa and if it was, was it for "demonstration" purposes only? Having said that, how did OMC get around the APBA production rule of 25 units with 6 or less engines? Mod U? OZ? I'm surprised Mercury didn't sue to block the rotary race entries similar to what they did to enter the V8 series? Both companies intended to produce V6 products for profit. The rotary was not.
The UIM OZ class did not have any 25 units etc..just over 2 liter.
The rotaries was raced in Paris 6 hours 1974..but Mercury made sure the OZ class was not invited to the Paris race but the race organization made a Experimental class for the rotary.
In Windermere 1973 there was an UIM OZ class.
OMC and the Rotary outboard took the overall win in Windermere 1973

Nothing to do with thread but need help how to place an ad? I went to buy and sell link but don't see anything about placing an ad. Any direction would be appreciated.
Not 100% but I think this is South Africa and the UIM OZ class.

High Tariffs Lead to Manufacturing Johnson & Evinrude In Australia
Exporting had been a major profit center ever since Bess Evinrude began her first venture in Scandinavia in 1912. Realizing a significant market opportunity, both Johnson and Evinrude began exporting to Australia in the 1920’s. While successful, outboards were none the less expensive and hard to get.
Tariffs Drive a Major Change - In order to control their economy and prevent inflation, the Australian government imposed strict import licensing in 1953, with an almost total ban on imported luxury items, including outboard motors. The Australian market was potentially large, leading OMC to open a 52,000 square foot plant in Bankstown, New South Wales, under the protection of a favorable tariff. In 1960, production began initially assembling Johnson & Evinrude models from 3hp up to 40HP, with outstanding results. Within the first twelve months of operation, nearly 14,000 engines were assembled, and production increased at a healthy rate of 25 percent annually throughout the first half of the decade. As a result of this performance, the subsidiary became profitable after the first full year of production. By the 1970's, it was producing the full range up to V6s with about 25% local content.
OMC also maintained manufacturing facilities in Belgium, Canada, China, Brazil and Mexico.

Well..Fast on Water published the Entry list for Bristol-Embassy GP 1980 today on their FaceBook page.
Here is the rest of the story..pretty similar to Bristol 1982 Merc fans love to brag about..!!
This was the last race for the Merc T4..Mercury retired from UIM OZ class racing after Bristol 1980 because the rumors was out about the new OMC V8 for the UIM OZ class 1981.
