Stepped hulls have been around for more than 100 years, says Michael Peters, the owner of Michael Peters Yacht Design in Sarasota, Fla. In fact, Peters has a model of the first stepped-hull raceboat — a 1910 John Thornycroft 26-footer with a single step.

The old wooden trick skis at the back are a bonus.
A book on Ditchburn boats states that: “Pioneer British designer and builder SE (Sam) Saunders of Crowe England had built several stepped-hull vessels before the first world war”
From A Brief History of the Gold Cup - Hydroplane and Raceboat Museum (ning.com), “the first hydroplane hull to win the Gold Cup was MIT II in 1911 with J.H. Hayden at the wheel. The hydroplanes with their underside “steps” and their ability to plane over the surface of the water spelled the end of the displacement era.” From 1922-1928 stepped hulls were not allowed in Gold Cup racing.
The Ditchburn Viking, introduced in 1927 was the first Canadian boat with a stepped hull. It was a 27’ long with a 6’6” beam and a weight of around 5000 lb, depending upon the engine selected. These boats went over 40 mph.
Stepped hulls were re-introduced in Canada by J Craft around 1990-1991. They built a 17’ shallow V with a stepped bottom.
I don’t know when the first US production stepped hull was introduced. Hustler brought out their first stepped hull in 1993. Hustler Powerboats- History (hustlerspeedboats.net). Fountain’s stepped hulls were introduced in the August 1994 issue of Powerboat Magazine.

It is beneficial when your daughter (and her family) live in Portsmouth. Costs of accommodation, food and drink in the UK will make you cry, and it is getting worse.
So much for Brexit, instigated by certain Conservatives to lay their hands on the tiller of governmental power.
