Konig engines have always been a thing of beauty, that one was no different. That belt system is really cool too, incredible thought and engineering in that.
They were the holy grail when I was involved.
It was fun watching them come out of the turns and pull the pipes.
Going into the turns they’d extended the pipes which tuned them for lower rpm, then pull them on exit, which shortened the tuned length of the pipes for top end.
When they did this, their rooster tails would lay down.
Basically coming in boost.
The 500’s we’re faster than all but the best 700’s and sometimes even faster than them.
They also ran an 1100 class but the 500’s were almost always the fastest.
Best power I heard fro
a 500 in that late ‘70’s/early 80’s era was 180-ish.
Similar to the GP bikes of the day.
Last kilo record I heard of for a 500 hydro was 10 or so yrs ago, set w/a Yamato at 128!
Separate lever right beside the throttle.
I put a sliding chamber on a 350cc Yamato 80 back in the day.
First time I ran it w/my test wheel on the tach, it ran the same as stock.
Then I pulled the pipe.
It instantly buried the 8k tach!!
A 1000 more than ever before snd never that quickly.
You never saw a prop get installed so quickly!
Back in early 1977 when I signed the contract with Volvo Penta in Gothenburg to race for them in the UIM OE class..it was clearly in the contract I must use the Konig UIM OE class engine with the Volvo Penta outboard engine cover.
Konig did have a 6 cylinder UIM OE class engine available but Volvo Penta said NO..I could only race that engine after OK from Volvo..
I asked a couple of times but always the same answer..NO..:)
Dieter Konig's sisters son Mareth did use the 6 cylinder engine in most of the races 1977..He was not under contract with Volvo Penta. The problem was I did beat Mareth with my 3 cylinder engine with the Volvo Penta engine cover..even in Brodenbach.
Here is a picture of the 6 cylinder Konig..later Dieter made a 8 cylinder engine for the UIM OE class..powerful but not dependable. At that time most of the races in the UIM OE/F3 World Series was longer..more like 30 minutes and OMC was the best choice.
(I still wonder how fast my black Molinari could have been with the Konig 6 cylinder engine.)

Very cool Lars.
Lars I was at a pro race in Florida several years ago and they had an eight cylinder Koenig there.
It was two opposed fours stacked on top of each other but it never did run right.
Beating the two 6 cylinders Königs with my 3 cyl. Evinrude CC was no problems in the World Championship race Drammen, Norway 1982...https://svera.se/blogg/my-1-formula-...nrude-cc-1982/

Both König boats are Burgess tunnels.
Same as mine.
If I remember correctly Jimbos best Mod 50 record was around 115 MPH.
Similar speed as my Konig/Molinari 1977 and my with Burgess/Evinrude 1982.
Cathy McConnell
Yes, that is Jimbo driving. A good eye, Lars. He only used the full face Simpson helmet for just a few races during one year. He did not like full face helmets. He took that Boat through the Kilos one way at 115 mph and Set the record at 112.72 in Oct. 1980 in Waco, Texas.

Yesterday was a Big Day for Mr. Bill. Today is a Big Day for Mr. Lars. Today you have achieved a notable milestone. What is it you ask?...Today, not only does your thread continues to be the most read thread on Scream and Fly, but as of early this morning, you have A Quarter Million more views than the nearest thread and that thread has been on Scream and Fly for a year and a half longer than your thread. What makes your thread stand out is that you not only post historic power boat racing pictures, you post the who, what, when and where. Seeing your pictures with the date, the location, the driver's name, the hull brand and the engine type makes a big difference. Congratulations and Thank You for giving us a reason to click on Scream and Fly...
Yep.
To me, the stories that are when Lars was there, changes everything for me.
This is posted by Sture on the FB page. Sture is a Swedish boat builder and we won the Paris 6 hours together 1980. Driving a UIM OE class boat he built for me.

Today I cleaned behind a workbench, then this gem appeared!
It sat on the wall in our old workshop for many years.
The bench was moved here to our new workshop in 1992 and since then the picture has been rolled up behind the bench's tool board.
Now I will restore the picture and get it up on the wall again.

Thanks @Bob V
Some fun memories from Stockholm F1-V8 GP 1984..
First a new picture of my #8 Burgess/Evinrude..You can clearly see my Evinrude business Lasse Ström Marin - Number 1 Evinrude dealer in Sweden on the side of the boat.
https://www.screamandfly.com/attachm...7&d=1645803022
I got lots of media attention at the race and that upset Rolf Magnusson.. He owned the Evinrude dealership "Södermalms Marinservice AB" ..also in Stockholm.
We was/where in a big price-war selling Evinrude in Sweden.
Rolf came down to the Stockholm GP pit..Offered #11 Bob Spalding $1,000.00 to put his outboard dealership "Södermalms Marinservice AB" on the side of his Molinari.
They made a deal...but Bob broke down in the first heat and his race was over..
I remember Rolf saying..Sh*t..$1,000.00 for one lap..!!
My respond..you put your money on the wrong horse..!!..:)

Thanks Pasi for another "new" never seen before picture.
This is from Stockholm GP 1983.
It could be the same boat as the poster above. but I dont think so. Burgess built Roger a few boats 1982 & 1983.
Very similar boats.
One thing is for sure..this boat was shipped to USA after Stockholm and was completely destroyed in Minneapolis a few weeks later.
Roger did a WOT flip in Minneapolis
https://www.screamandfly.com/attachm...0&d=1645975785
Funny..Roger Jenkins and I had a "love - hate relationship"..started in Finland 1973 when I won my first big race..Roger refused to let me use some of "his" propellers owned by OMC..
We competed in the SE/OE class for many years..he won some races and I won some..
Roger was a very colorful person/racer and could handle English way better than me..
After we both stopped racing I spent a weekend in Wales at his home..
Great weekend with a lots of fun..
Later Roger moved to Spain and we lost contact..
FaceBook got us connected again some 10 years ago.
We lost Roger last year..R.I.P.
Here is a FB post he did 2011..:)..(its about Ron Hill)..sorry Ron..:smiletest:
I have a few more..
Coming later.

Yeah...........I get it. Only thing I got free from Mercury was a voltage regulator. Loaned some racing radio set ups to a guy in FL (IOGP) so he could meet equipment requirement to race. Never saw the stuff again. Changed my policy on "loaning" stuff to insist on a CASH deposit for just about anything. I'm sure that Bill Seebold had a chance to drive a V8 at some lake located inside area 51 (UFO site) LOL. Probably didn't happen when he was under contract with Mercury that's for sure. Mercury certainly didn't treat him very well after he retired from racing. Saw somewhere on this site where he has a center console boat in FL powered by a Yamaha?
@WaterZebra
Well...the "incident" 1973 was between me and Roger..
OMC / Jim Wagner was on my side.
Full story here.
A Swedish success, “propped into racing” by a Norwegian 1973
https://svera.se/blogg/racing-histor...-skalafor-mig/
In 1973 and 1974 Jim Wagner was the OMC racing boss in Europe. (To the right in the first picture.)
John Tucker was also working for OMC racing in Europe at the same time. (black arrow second picture).
If I remember correct Tucker was from South Africa.
Both was very friendly and helpful.

Hell/dam, where's your guts. We were actually in the dyno room with the rotary. I only recall 2 incidences. A single rotor where the dyno shaft broke, and the over speed shut down tach wasn't connected. The engine no-loaded and the flywheel came apart. That was in excess of 12,000 RPM. Cut block wall apart, but no one got hurt. The second was with a 4 rotor. The thru bolt holding the 2 cranks broke. The top engine had the ignition so it no-loaded. The bottom engine was connected to the dyno, so it stopped. Because the engine was dynamicly balanced when the 2 were connected, when not they weren't and it broke the engine off the dyno and was hanging by the throttle cable and fuel line while the top engine continue too no-load. I manage to pull the throttle back and hit the shut off switch. Again no one was hurt but several of us had the change their pants.
Fun at Encore last night. The latest new restaurant-bar-nightclub at Lake of the Ozarks.

Did you come down to Florida at all this year?
Speaking of OMC ownership.............
An Evinrude first appeared in the 007 movie "Dr. No"
Then, Evinrude appeared again in 007 "Thunderball" (fake fuel line problem)
The last and final time Evinrude was in film by brand name was 007 "Live and Let Die" (GT150 jump boat)
- Engineering study for jump done by Duke University
- Speed for jump was precisely 53 mph. My GT150 would chine walk at 58 mph just like clockwork.
- An Evinrude 135 V4 was used in the jump. Lower CG than a Merc would have.
Really neat how they rigged a line off of the poppet valve on the head to look like a bullet hole.:smiletest:
#19 "Kicco" Vidoli in the Stockholm GP 1984.
Thanks Pasi.
Great news...A FaceBook friend of mine have pictures from the F1-V8 race in Minneapolis. He is not sure from what year but I can figure that out when I get them..!!
The F1-V8 series raced in Minneapolis 1983/84 and 1985. I was part of the race 1983.

Luigi Valdano of Italy was a great friend/gentleman and boat racer.
We race together for many years. This is Luigi and his #17 Molinari/Benson & Hedges 1983.
Sadly we lost Luigi in a racing accident in the Holland GP 1984.
