I dont know, but probably not. She did not comment on my FB post but placed a very nice picture from Havasu 1969 instead. Coming next.
I can see Renato's brother behind the cockpit and I think its Fabio Porta next to Jack Leek looking at the crane.

A few familiar faces in this picture.
PS..Yes..Renato was the overall winner in the race..
https://www.screamandfly.com/attachm...0&d=1578968844[/QUOTE The Bristol race consisted of 2 races on saturday and 2 races on sunday Molinari won the first 3 races and was that far ahead on points decided he did not need to run in the last heat he had accumalated enough points for first place but Bob Hering thought otherwise he had finished in 2nd place in each race and if he won the last heat and Molinari never raced he was the only driver that could beat Molinari.Hering got in his boat for the start of last race and lined up for the start when Molinaris pit crew climbed on to Herings boat and lifted bob out of his boat in front of all the crowds watching and carried him to the dockside.Bob had no choice as it was Molinari boats and team so he did as was told.

Cathy McConnell...My best memory from Don Henrich... Don, special made, me a propeller for my red F3 Burgess/AKAI/Evinrude CC 1981. We were out testing in Sweden a few days before the big race in Nottingham, UK 1981 and I lost a propeller blade during the test. This prop. done by Don was by far the best..
No cell phones back then..but a billion "Swedish" quarters in a local pay phone and I got Don on the other end in Waukegan.
Told him about the problem..
Don told me he was working on another prop for me and it could be ready in an hour..
I can drive down to the Ohare airport, Chicago and try to get the prop on a plan to Sweden today.
This was a great effort and the 6 hour time differens helped out..It was early morning in Waukegan..
Believe or not next day I got the propeller at the Stockholm airport and took it with me to Nottingham..No time for testing..
Yes..I won the F3 race the following weekend in Nottingham..
I was so grateful for Dons effort to help me out.

[QUOTE=STEVERINO;3306418] That was some drama! Never heard this before! If the "team" decided to stand down in the last heat, why did they even let Hering's boat get in the water? That's what happens when you have corporate sponsors and the boss writes all of the checks. I can see why Bob Hering disappeared a little while later..............
Embassy GP/Bristol 1977.
Well..I was there racing OE/F3 with my Molinari/VPK.
This was one of the first big European races for Renato with Evinrude power. In my opinion Renato did nothing wrong. He got the result perfect.
Not only did he win the OZ class race with Evinrude CCC..Bob Hering was second with Johnson V6 RS.
On top of that Renato won the OE/F3 race with an Evinrude CC.
Renato did exactly what OMC hired him to do.
Bob Hering was hired by Renato to drive a second Saffa boat.
Same as Renato hired me to drive the second Saffa boat in Paris 1978.
I must do as Renato said or get another ride.

Bob Hering won the 1978 UIM OE World Championship race, still driving for Renato.
Hering's #457 Molinari even raced under the Italian flag. (second picture)
This is an interesting picture from the UIM OE World Championship race in Dayton, Ohio 1978.
Renato is using an after market midsection and a Merc gear case..Well..I guess it did not work out very good because Bob Hering won with a sister Molinari powered by a real OMC Mod 50/OE/F3 midsection gear case. Well Bob used a Johnson RS engine cover..https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/images/e...5/16/1f600.pnghttps://static.xx.fbcdn.net/images/e...5/16/1f600.png
PS..I dont think Jack Leek next to Renato's engine is very happy with Renato's "home made" stuff..!!

What was the standard race-boat-length which the V8’s powered?
Did anyone run a shorter-length version sprint-boat than the standard length?
Were the V8’s clamped onto a longer boat, than what the V6’s pushed?
https://www.screamandfly.com/attachm...4&d=1529001762
Complicated question to answer correct..this is how I remember it. (the picture above is from Liege, Belgium 1984)
The first year 1981 it was more or less V6 boats with a raised up rear boat cowling to match the engine.
Renato & David Burgess was quicker to figure out how to built V8 boats and Jenkins #9 Burgess boat 1982 was the same length as my 1983 #8 Burgess.
Slowly the F1-V8 boats got longer and 1985 with the new redesigned V8 engine most boat builders was going with a bit longer boats.
(1985 and up boats was also a bit heavier with safety cells)
I know that Ben Robertson still have the molds for Velden boats. Cees took it one step further and made F1-V8 boats with the possibility to change sponson..longer or shorter depending on the race course/more or less lift.
The picture below is from the 1988/89 season. A 3 liter V8 was used at that time.

I was watching the UIM F1 race from Italy yesterday. Erik Stark of Sweden driving for Scott Gillman Racing crashed on his own.
Today I learned why..
(only 8 boats was running to the end of the race)
Erik Stark,
Big crash during the race as the middle section broke in full speed and the engine fell off https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/images/e...5/16/1f631.png

From my FB page..
I am trying to get some more info about the "Havasu OMC race history"..
(the reunion is coming up in about a month)
Need to ask the "Queen of boat racing history Cathy McConnell"..
I think Jimbo McConnell drove his #191 Molinari/Evinrude V6 CCC 3 liter looper to victory 1979..or was it 1980??.
Not sure about his co-pilot but pretty sure Cathy can help out. (Looks like it was Johnny Sanders.
Thanks in advance.

Very interesting OMC facts..
The first race for the powerful OMC V6 2 liter looper was not in the 1975 World Championship race in Cardiff, UK when Cees Van Der Velden won the title with this new Johnson engine.
I have forgot this info I got long time ago from the man himself developing the OMC V6 2 liter looper..
As always Jimbo McConnell was involved ..Jimbo raced this new outboard in Miami a few weeks before Cardiff and won the US title. My guess is..Jimbo used an Evinrude engine cover..so..the first race with the new purpose built 2 liter V6 looper race engine was an Evinrude..not a Johnson..Please read the story from Fred Hauenstein.
Thanks Fred.

Havasu has been good to Jimbo. His first race for OMC was in 1967 with a Johnson. (After that they were Evinrudes). Top speed was 67 mph. He won the Single engine class with Ted May finishing after a mishap that caused Jimbo to break his nose. He again won the Single engine Class in 1969, no co-driver. Then came the Overall win with co-driver Johnnie Sanders in 1979. Jimbo, with no co-driver in 1980 and 1981 Overall Winner and 2nd Place in 1982 and 1983, no co-driver. Maybe being raised in Needles, California, 50 miles up the Colorado River from Lake Havasu gave him an “edge”……https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/images/e...5/16/1f604.png. He ran his first Needles Marathon race in 1958 running from Needles to Lake Havasu with a 7 1/2 hp Mercury A. Runabout. He made 1 mile and broke down https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/images/e....5/16/2639.png. Thankfully he improved https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/images/e...5/16/1f604.pnghttps://static.xx.fbcdn.net/images/e...5/16/1f3c1.png
The triple flip at Miami Marine Stadium in August 1975 was NOT the big story..
The big story was Jimbo McConnell’s #191 Scotti-Craft with an Evinrude V6 Super Strangler “looper”
This was the first ever 2 liter OMC V-6 pure racing looper power-head. This incredible new powerful engine was 3/4 of a mile ahead of the competition in the race and won both the APBA Mod -120 & Mod – U National title.
After the Miami race the same engine was modified for alky and shipped to Holland and Cees Van Der Velden installed the new racing outboard on his brand new #1 Velden/Marlboro. A new mid section/gear-case and a Johnson V-6 Stinger GP engine cover was used.
Two weeks after the Miami race Cees Van Der Velden did a fantastic job in Cardiff, UK and won the UIM ON class 2 liter world title.
One of many behind this extremely fast OMC 2 liter looper was Fred Hauenstein.
Thanks to Fred Hauenstein and Cathy McConnell for info and picture.

In 1975 I had returned to my roots. I was back to running a 44in Mercury on my V-bottom McCall but now as an SD boat. The OMC looper motors were simply much faster in the E classes. Attachment 493287
