Speaking of 'back in the day', a few months ago someone contacted me looking for info about a G.W. Invader. He said he is writing a book about that boat company and was trying to find the history behind a patch that the Invader Racing Team had made and wore on their race uniforms. It showed a single Merc on a 14' really running nice, up on the pad.
Turned out I have the original photo that was used to make the patch! I sent it to him so he could make copies for his research. He asked what I remembered about the photo and who was driving the boat. I told him that I wasn't sure of the driver other than it was either Gary Garbrecht or me. The driver is wearing a bubble shield and I can't tell who's mug is behind it.
Anyway, I am now sure that it is Gary in that pic and want to tell this guy, but I didn't keep any of our correspondence and, as a result, have no way of contacting him. Hopefully he will see this post or someone who reads this will know who is writing the book.
Something popped out of my memory bank over the weekend which convinced me it is Gary. Unfortunately, that same something has left me thinking that it was me that took the picture, but am not positive ..... Bummer! Someone other than the PR department taking pictures at Merc back in those days was really taboo, you got fired for pulling stunts like that. But I think I remember Gary wanting a shot of that boat running like that. I think he brought the camera in and asked me to take a few photos while I was in the safety boat?
Frustrating ..... as Grandpa Seebold once said "Gettin' old ain't for sissies". :D
The picture in question ...... I don't remember what that model Invader was called back in the day.
