Is bobby soles the first boat across at the start...chrysler..and scat craft?
Don't think I have ever seen so many Chryslers in a single engine heat race.
:cheers:We are getting so much great stuff I changed the title to include the 70's and 80's.
Keep it coming with the newspaper stuff and the photos.
I believe so, but not yet a Scat Craft. My father told me this story awhile back, maybe Jim knows more details.
Soles built the little cat and it did well. Bill Critchfield liked it and they cut a deal. Bill traded Bobby a fishing type hull in exchange for the cat. It was a true cat with no pads on the sponsons. Bill cut the sponsons and used 2x4's for pads to make a plug. The Scat Craft "pickle fork" was born. He sold them for $600 with steering and throtle hardware!
hay 2us. i liked the pic of us raceing.you know and i know who was first dont we, will talk about it some time.did you ever pass me at any time in all those years i dont reamber.i know wally hunter tryed he had damage to show for it,we sure had fun makeing you mad,and you telling us how you blew start or someone cut you off.well like my mentor herb reeves told me bump and run or tap the steering bar and ,hold on and thay will move .well big jim im happy you were able to get 2us.mark was hard to get.he and i had some real contact in some of races,i wish joe miller would have hung around i had some more bumping to do with him.i have some pic.of me joe and mark running in to each other on one of many starts at the stadium.jim i dont know if i ever thanked you stoping to help me after buss taylor ran in to me.at the stedium that was helluv ride.at 95 mph that was the speed my keller.when don prutt cut in front of me,i new that 57 boats were halling ass,and anyone of them could have run over me again and that would have been it for me.so 30 some years later thanks again jim.so from the guy who drove you crazy with e67 your old pain in the ass that you never passed, johnny reed. ps.this is my first time doing this so you win this one. if you like call. 954/579 1760
hay jim wally hunter,if i remember he never ever passed me,did he ever pass you. the only time he passed me,we were testing and i was slowing down and he crashed in to me in his new curtis craft.he was screaming,he told me he was going to sue me.i guess you two were always trying,to catch me and mark. we had the best class, in opc. i should have stayed in e class.but i wanted to go faster.and sit in a seat after 6 yr. on my knees.thats why i went , fg ,sg ,s class, with the carlson, and the twin dutchman.that i built for me and b.bolick. that boat was fast it ran 105 mph.bob just didnt have the balls to run it.it was fun runing the mathrons, sit on my ass.watching you guys busting yours.every time i would lap wally, his helmet was halfway off his head like he was going fast.and you always had your viser pulled back and your mouth wide open ,i just thought you yelling at me because i was passing you .i was only going about 85 trying to keep gene and redbird from passing me. j reed.
John. I made more than a few mistakes in my boat racing days. one of the worst was not taking the first v-bottom boat Nick Chapman built when it was offered to me. You wound up with that one and my flat bottom just could not keep up with the the v-bottoms. Despite our diferences I always knew you were one of the few drivers that I could run deck to deck with and you wouldn't do anything stupid. Maybe a little unethical but not stupid.
After I got the V-bottom McCall I think I managed to pass you a few times, the 70 Nationals comes to mind. I don't recall much about racing with Hunter. It seemed like he moved up into J Production after a couple of seasons in SE.
jim in 1970 nat. i got 2nd.place behind joe miller because h.spencer fliped right next to me we all most hit and i had to slow ,joe got to first turn first.down the back strech i was pulling on him.but we had half alap to go,the rest is histoy.seeya at the turn.johnny. ps.i just rigged an allison river racer.never went 100 so easy.its a bast.
John. You are off by a year. That was 1969 and I was not there because I was in Mississippi at Army Reserve Summer Camp. While you guys were racing Nationals I was trying not to get blown away by Hurricane Camile. I remember 1970 quite well since it was the year my oldest son was born and the year I won my only National Championship. That was the first of three times I finished the season second in points. Once in SE and twice in SD.
Johnny, How's it going? Haven't seen you since George's funeral..Heard you quit flying from Rob..

The bottom photo is either Ed or Mark Hauptner. They had the seat and fuel tank on a sliding rail with a manual crank for trim/balast. I will try to find the pic where he forgot to crank it forward for a turn. Not a good result.
