Looks like there’s been a bad accident at Jacksonville in the P1/s.
Tell you when I know more for certain.
Here is some new footage. One killed and three injured.

Talked with Mark——- I have a lot clearer idea of what went on in Jacksonville——- butunable to comment at this time.
None of the boats have been impounded, and it’s been called “a racing accident” ——
Will leave a much depleted field for the next P1 race.
There is some helicopter footage which Mark wants to see before making any comments.
Man who caused it was a rookie and paid the ultimate price. But that’s an interim judgement based on what footage there is available.
Niether boat was badly damaged—— co- pilot has a badly lacerated arm but if the hull had not been Carbon it could have been so much worse.
Afraid there will be calls for full safety canopy in the P1 class before long Pilgrim.
single engine vee bottom in the rough, hardest boat to drive by far and at 70mph not a place for a rookie
First time I happened to see P1 racing on TV, I couldn't believe these individuals were racing "offshore" sized hulls using "pleasure boat - poker run" seats again. 70 mph or 170 mph, doesn't matter...something will happen eventually and it did. I was also startled to see these guys were racing close enough to trade paint in the turn pins. The accident made its way on to national TV news this weekend.
I have blown the footage up and slowed it down and it appears that the outside boat made a hard left hand turn into the path of the inside boat. I can't believe that it was intentional which makes me think of mechanical failure. If there is aerial footage, it would answer all or most of the questions.
Like I said—— capsule is already made——- they’re going into the next batch of P1/s. Scheduled for later in the year for export to the Far East.
Only ten boats in the USA series to cater for anyway !
Jackie - I wish I could send it to you, but because it is formatted, it will not allow me to send it other than it's original format. However, you can do it yourself - here's how....First enlarge it to full screen. If you have a desk top computer it will even be better. Then start the video and wait for any commercials to be over and then just before the crash, click on the pause button (the two vertical lines under the picture and to the left). Now gently move the slider button to the right and each time you do, it will be like a freeze frame or manual slow motion. The slider button is the circle or square that moves as the video is running.

I’m fast becoming a “GEEK”Bob——— took me a couple of go’s, but I nailed it in the end. Unfortunately it still is not abundantly clear exactly what happened——— definitely needs the helicopter footage to determine the sequence of events that led up to the tragedy. That’s if the cameras were filming the right boats at the right time.
Officials have confirmed it’s classed as a “RACING INCIDENT” —— so at the moment there’s no witch hunt!
Hell of a statement Pilgrim——- BOATS GOING OVER EACH OTHER ALL THE TIME——- is this a case of “Familiarity Breeding Contempt” ? Or Bumper Boat Racing,? Or Destruction Derby?
Must confess to not being Au Fait with a Texas Tri Hull——- But I will look it up on the dot dot!
yes thats the type of racing it is so very entertaining.
Its an entry level class, everyone comes back to shore with a grin on their face. Must be best bang for your buck racing ever.
Engines are old xflow 140 omc's, 22" Merc chopper and they run claimer rules so engines are $2500 I think, if you spend more you risk losing it for $2500
If I could find a pile of old v4's I would start that class here.
My Sainted Mother used to say —- If you look long enough and hard enough you can find anything you want!
In every motorised sport there’s always a “Cheap as Chips” entry level class——— cars, motor bikes, boats, as well as sail boats, probably perambulators, go carts , frogs and turtles——- whatever the sport, few will survive and go on to be super competitive——— the way forward is always expensive and the old adage “DISCRETION IS THE BETTER PART OF VALOUR” taken into account.
Invariably the route we eventually choose is like the road to hell ( paved with good intention ) but , a few good men will make it.
Smart bit of all this, is keeping those few, as safe as possible in a highly dangerous sport. Do not expect any thanks or accolades for doing this—— because you will be disappointed—— it’s one of those things that are taken for granted, unnoticed when things are running smooth——- but when there’s a tragedy, watchout, Somebody will want to blame someone or something!
the texas tri hull hit the nail on the head with a class for all.
raceable by beginner
low price to enter
hull and engine readily available
hasnt killed anyone
claimer class to prevent big dollar racing
any other class meet that in todays diminished racing environment?

Boat racing has never been cheap, it’s simply a case of a 50hp Merc and a 15’ V bottom will always be cheaper than a VERADO on anything——- tunnel—— v bottom or one of yesterday’s boats!
Vintage boating (you don’t race a vintage craft) is one of the more expensive hobbies.
Thought you said engines were hard to find
Hasnt killed anyone ??? Maybe you should add “YET” to that caption!
Sorry, but if I worked hard to get my rig quicker than anyone else——— last thing in the world I want,is for someone with big bucks claiming it.
Niether you nor I know the exact reason for the decline in boat racing. You have your theory—— I have mine, but the days of 100 boats lining up for the start In places like Havasu—— Parker and Paris are long gone.
I understand on a poker run race——— there can be as many-as 200 applicants———— SHOW ME A .”CHEAP” poker.run rig ?

Now look what what I just found on the dot dot———— never mind the wing——— take a look at the
“TEXAS TRI” behind it——— maybe they’re obsolete already Pilgrim?
They are still making a flop of the 166 glastron for the class and omc made a million v4's, ( wish they still did)
Cant imagine Glastron are making boats for the Texas Tri Series If they can be bought for $2500, complete with a V4 Rude ——— So OMC made a million V4/s ? Makes me wonder just how many in line sixes Mercury made? There always seemed to be at least five Mercs to every OMC V4
So just how much does a new Glastron 166 cost these days———- if the going price for a complete rig, is @$2500 , maybe the best way to acquire one is simply on the “Claimer” system !

Daughter Sam just sent me this———
Texas Tri-Hulls are the only way to go. Cheap to acquire, trade paint on the race course and low tech motors. Boats are not fragile custom-built one-of-a-kinds. They are everywhere in the USA gathering moss under trees or lean-to sheds and usually with a V4 on the transom. Prices range from "free take-aways to about $2500. Roll cages are easy to build and install, not like these hyper-complicated F1 safety cells today. The whole idea behind the claimer concept (USA) was to keep somebody from investing a lot of $$$ to "buy" first place in every race. Chances are that if Texas Tri-Hulls really caught on, there still would be Havasu and Parker. Kinda like Mod VP but way cheaper. I noticed that the NGK series started for 2018 and they had a total of SIX boats for one of the heat qualifiers. I'm still betting my $$$ on Mercury stopping any production of S3000 powerheads, mids, gearcases and props for OPC altogether by 2019 (next year).
I gather that several boatbuilders used the same drawings to produce a “Tri Hull”——- Same over here, one for all and all for one———- once you got a mould——- it’s like .shelling peas l
Boats made in a day—— popped , and another one the next day. A bucket full of resin ——- an armful of glass and bingo you got a Tri Hull or a dory or a 166 depending on mitigating circumstances.
Im a great believer in the “RUN WHAT YOU BRUNG”system———— handicap racing where everyone can join in the fun.
I love all Powerboat racing——— don’t always agree with the way it’s going——— one of the reasons I regularly fall out with drivers—— authorities—— format——- afraid my mouth gets me into trouble regularly.
I think we all agree that boat racing needs a steroid injection————- the whole scene is becoming a joke. At the top of Offshore Racing there’s two contenders at the moment withprobably half a dozen at Key West———— with a bit of luck, calm conditions , there could be three finishers———- big FECKIN deal !
P1 was struggling to make its presence felt————- ten boats in all————- one on the trailer because they couldn’t find a driver———— just had the worst possible scenario with a rookie fatality —— that’s not going to help the cause!
Tim Seebold seems to be keeping the NGK series on a fairly even keel, but even the most ardent followers of F1 will admit to a shortage of numbers.
Really thought Caldwell could fill a gap——— turned out to be all smoke and mirrors——- huge horsepower numbers from beautiful pieces of kit that never materialised———— but the price tag puts it out of reach,
Anyway, if they ever did produce a couple of working motors, either Mercury or the ruling body would block it under some obscure law or other——— Mercury pulling the plug on the competition motors.
Yup, I’d have to say Powerboat Racing as we knew it——— is up sh-t creek without a paddle!
Maybe we should wipe the slate clean and start again———- Find a stretch of water——- Lake——river—- sea or ocean——— bring what you got——— run it till it stops. Miami Nassau——— Parker—— Havasu——- ozarks——- might be fun!
Cost is killing the sport, or at best, it’s not helping. When an F1 with a cell comes out at €100,000 and a top running Superboat comes out at a tad over a million———— not a lot of folk are coming out to play.

Just a little humour to end the day——— night - night all.
