Tricks that old racers get up to after retirement

Friday, bright eyed and bushy tailed, ready to take on the world again, yesterday temperatures reached over 30 degrees------today is forecast to be about the same again.
Looked in at the pool condition' 32, the highest it's ever been, years since I've been in the pool this much------don't do a lot of up and down the length these days, more of a knees bend and dip the bonce in occasionally. Though I must confess I did dive in last time but the shock to the system was so great it did catch me off guard----that was positively the last time.
Next wave of screaming marauders due in Sunday, so have to make the most of these last two days of freedom.
Jilly and daughter are off to the Chichester Festival Theatre todayfor a bit of culture, needless to say , not exactly my cup of tea and I'm cultured enough already.
Looks like I shall have a day to myself, rare treat indeed,shall try to be at my creative best and produce something special!
Pretty sure there's a lot of old boaters out there who get up to lots of tricks, why don't you share them with us all, I would like it if a lot more of you joined in----as one of my kids told me----the threads ok dad except there too much of YOU in it-----lout of the mouth of babes--------catch you all later. Just finished off the " Cronstrom" Collection of trolls-----some are wall mounted with secret slot fixings, the rest are freestanding with soft green baize on the underside.
Quite pleased with the weeks work----played about with various finishes----yacht varnish----epoxy---wax polish.
Haven't quite got the hang of epoxy----gives a very deep shine, but ten coats of wax or three coats of yacht varnish will give the same result.

Course it's Saturday today, But Jilly decides she's going for a walk in the woods first thing before it gets too hot to walk. Trouble is the woods are a mile from the house so she needs the lexus to get there----she leaves at 6-30, walks for ninety minutes, back by 8 . Car boot sale starts at 7-00am so it's near nine when i get there-----forraged for an hour but the only thing I found was an anvil.
I have used a section of railway line as my bashing block for years (since my son persuaded me I no longer needed an anvil) and managed quite nicely thank you. Saw the said rusty old anvil looking very sorry for itself and ignored my better judgement and bid a silly price for it (. Nothing to lose I didn't really want it anyway) the geezer snatched my hand off, told me he was sick of the sight of it, every time he picked it up he got chronic backache. Soon. As I did the deal I thought "oh sh-t, I have to carry it to the car". I got it home and I won't be buying another very soon I can tell you.

Was one of those "Remember all your life" days yesterday, neighbours down the lane had a 60th birthday party ( Jesus H. I got kids older than that) and Jilly and me and all of our local friends were invited. Started off with Champagne and continued with more wine, 'twas a 12 o'clock midday start and a stonking hot summer day 86 and rising, tell you more later, leaving to pick the grand kids up.

Been one hell of a long day----left crack-o-sparrow to drive the 200 miles and collect a couple of grand kids , that's why I couldn't hang about on the I pad this morning, more than my life was worth to be late.
Took about four hours, this is the busiest weekend of the year on England's roads, first weekend of the kids summer break, no traffic on the way down, but the idiots were out in force on the return leg.
Arrived back in time for lunch and a dip in the pool, then time to watch the Hungarian GP.
Hamilton started from the pit lane in P23 ---had a bit of luck and a good pit call, a scintillating drive that was great to watch ----all the way up to second-----
Now the Krauts have taken great pains to tell the world "there are no team orders, both drivers are free to race"---so forgive me for asking-----if that's a fact, then why did the management order Lewis to MOVE OVER AND LET NICO THROUGH, He's in second place fair and square, what on earth is going on?
Funny how it's only Hamilton's car that just happens to have fires and brake failures and then told to move over, but then it becomes abundantly clear when Vettel is the Mercedes choice for next year, making it an all Kraut line up.
Look back through F1 history, engine makers last up front for about 3years before the next successful marque takes over, in recent years, Ferrari, Honda,Cosworth, Renault, Mercedes,---
Looks like Honda are coming back in, Audi must be thinking about dipping their toes in the water before long.
Bet you Ferrari will be making advances for Lewis----Riakenen has to go---he's had his day, new boys are already coming in---Danny Ricardo, gotta be a future world champ.
Third was good damage limitation, but it could have been even better!
Ive been rabbiting on as usual, told you very little about what me myself was up to, will try and put the balance right tomorrow-----MYGGWY . J.

Jilly took the kids to see the Flying Fortress at Ford aerodrome----it's in a huge hanger and has been made into a kids paradise----seen it a few times myself so I backed out of the trip and locked myself in the shop. Once I got into the swing of things again, everything just clicked into place and the ideas kept coming.
Still have tons of spalted beech at my disposal so I decided that all my old friends should have a " Halen -Gar" in one guise or another----show you the results at the end of the week.
Cameron decides to freeze Ruski money, Putin cancels the arms program', British firms protest,, so it's checkmate at the minute.
Trouble is the rest of Europe are chicken and won't upset the status quo, so Cameron is out on a limb but has no teeth and is chewing with his gums.
Obama is breathing heavy but doing nothing.
Merkel is waiting to make a move----as usual.
French are finding another bonking bird for the first minister so we do not have a situation bien-sur.
Temp dropped dramatically and we had thunderstorms and hailstones today, nobody used the pool.
Ungrateful little buggers----they can go to Fishers Farm tomorrow.

Yup the kids are off to the animal farm and according to her who shall be obeyed -----I am driving them there, to Wisborough Green.
Dont mind really, means I can drop them off, then go see my old friend Bill Mouland ( one of the worlds top wood turners ) in Kirdford.
He still has a set of planer blades I dropped off last time I visited him, will take out my current set and leave them with him.
No time left, have to jump up quickly -----whip has been cracked!!!

Sad day today, went to see Bill, but he was in a chair which he occupies from the time he gets up in a morning to when he goes to bed at night----gets taken upstairs in a Stenna lift and can just make the bathroom and then bed.
Never gets out into the workshop any more-----hes 91, but don't look like he'll make 92.
Left after a couple of hours and for the first time ever he didn't see me off the premises.
Picked the kids up from animal farm and was home by 3. Went in the shop 'till 5 but didn't have much heart in what i was doing.

Was killing time waiting for my son Mark to call me back on FaceTime. i called him , but he was in the middle of prop bashing and said i'll call you back in ten minutes, thats how come i got to reading about some poor guy in London [on S&F] who had a muslim family living next door who were prayer wailing through a loud speaker. Police could do bugger all as it was not PC to interfere.
Let me tell you about my early life as a youngster, born and bred in BRADFORD a large woollen town [now a city] my grandad , then my father were bakers and had shops in Bingley and Bradford, i served my apprenticeship as a baker and by the time i was 18 i was a master baker and had city and guilds etc, etc, Was the best at icing a wedding cake and could spin a galleon out of sugar, oh yes i was 18 with a very big head and knew everything. Left Bradford and moved south My tutor had a shop in Manningham lane ,today you would be hard put to find a white person anywhere in the area. They came to work in the mills originally "PAKIS" we called them, six to a room, worked night and day, bought the house, sent for their mums ,dads, grandma's and granddads, nephews and nieces, uncles and aunts, brothers and sisters, neighbours and acquaintances
The populace in the city was totally white in 1948 with the first Pakistani yet to make an appearance. Today the population is 90% Indian and Pakistan, More mosques than churches------all the schools teach English as a SECOND language-----Muslim run town council with a Black mayor.
Transport [buses] totally run by Pakistanis. If i go on , you will think i am biased------not the case------i left for pastures greener for a life i chose, my decision-----nobody forced me ----i did not like what happened in my home town----so i left.
It took 60 years to do this---------it could not happen--------but it did-------i don't even know WHY i am telling you this-----maybe because its happening again all over the civilised world.
Seems to me these people don't like the west but want to be part of it-----or destroy it ---i don't know ---i don't have any answers.
We used to have the odd PROSSIE [prostitute] in Bradford-----but its now PC to call them SEX WORKERS> heavens to murgatroyd ---whatever next? S'enough for today, MYGGWY.

I think the aliens want to come to the west and make it theirs and screw whoever doesn't like it. Just like our ancestors did.

Finished all the Halen-Gar trolls, they all had 3 coats of yacht varnish, and thats all they are going to get, some are off to Sweden, Some to France ---And a couple to the USA. 'Twas fun while it lasted----i enjoyed foraging through the wood pile and shaping the bases , turning the mounts and shaping the trolls.
Very satisfying to see the colours come out as the varnish brings out the best in the pieces. On to pastures new---car boot sale at Ford aerodrome tomorrow ---have to meet a guy who has a shedload of machinery for sale-just love doing a deal with hard nosed stallholders!!!
Have arranged with daughter Sam to fly out the golf trophies-----too big and heavy and fragile to put in a suitcase as extra hand luggage------still costs though-------no such thing as a free meal anymore. Wouldn't mind but the old fart golfers are about as enthusiastic as kids eating brussel sprouts.
We had further invations from another of my daughters [BOO] she brought four more of my great grand sons-------six kids in a pool -----with the one girl screaming like a banshee wailer most of the time, with the boys tormenting the life out of the poor little biddy. After 4 hours of that, i was glad when she took them home---------as my sainted mother used to say ------Nice to see 'em come--------Nicer to see 'em go.
It's been really hot and sticky and Jilly just called to say it was Pimms o'clock, that takes priority over S&F every time, have a nice day.

I really do have to stop being so bloody stupid------every time i go to a car boot sale, i seek out the tool guys and start foraging-----its always the same old crap on a different day, so what do i do, theres a box full of drill bits, we start to haggle and i walk away , guy calls after me and accepts my last offer, i walk off with another 200 drills-------------why the hell did i do that????? i already have a thousand drills, most of which i will never get to use----------it,s because i can.
Bought a brand new jug and 6 glasses that have PIMMS written all over them, take it home and get a right royal roasting from her indoors, Why did you waste your money on that lot , says she, It only cost £3 i explain, I have been making Pimms for over 40 years and the jug has never let me down yet. Jesus wept------i just can't win, if i had not bought it and told her about it, she would have said, Why did you not buy it-----when i did buy it ,'twas a waste of money anyway!!!!!!!
Bought myself an adjustable stool with a large backrest, standing at the bench for long periods gives me the eebie--- jeebies, and if anyone asks me why i would buy an adjustable piece of sh-t, i'll quit.

Got a phone call from ROY COOPER [fast on water], turns out they have Phil Rolla's four pointer that Ron Jones built for him in the 60's. It hung in Rolla's workshop for 20 years before he sent it to Kevin Desmond for safe keeping at the Musee Nautique down in Bordeaux. Was down there 'till the town council went belly up and there was no more funding for the place, so it closed and its contents generally disappeared .Rolla's boat wound up at the Basildon Motor boat for the next 10 yrs. They ran out of readies and the place closed, again nobody wanted the stuff and it was dispersed all over the hog market. We got the Cosworth, much of the collection just simply vanished, and LOBRC got the majority.
Roy told me thatRoy Clarke and his son hired a truck and took all the outboards down to Salcombe in Devon' some 250 of them----they are stored in an underground bunker-----now here's the interesting bit------the property is coming up for sale shortly, but who the hell has room to store 250+ outboards.
I only found out about this this afternoon----straight from the horses mouth. If anyone is interested i could look into it.
Now the fate of Rolla's Ron Jones Hydro from the 60's can be decided, I tried to find this boat since Kevin Desmond went to ground.
There is also a very interesting aluminium hydro from the 1930's made by the Birmingham Alloy co, they also made the motor for this, but that disappeared and was later fitted with a Connaught engine which has also disappeared , the alloy was salt resistant and the reason the hull is still in remarkable shape.
Been a funny sort of day all round, exiting though don't you think. Y'see, i'm not ALWAYS boring.

Well I went to the site, but found no trace of the ROTORIES or you or me, saw a shed load of Lassie from when he started to when he finished. Great plan of the Paris racecourse and lots of blurb about the new Rudes he's talking care of----obviously did a hell of a lot better job for OMC than I did for mercury.

Another week rushed by at a tremendous rate of knots while I wasn't looking, July buggered off into the long distance and August crept in which means in four weeks we'll be into Autumn.
Damned roller coaster of life seems to be gathering momentum and going ever faster, need to step off it for a while and smell the roses. Off 2014 will be on us before we realise it. Still haven't booked a flight to Florida yet, Looked on line a few times, but the prices seem to have risen dramatically , or is it me?
Had a chat with Mark yesterday and he told me he put together 30 props for Kevin Desmond's French boat museum, was not best pleased when I told him they all disappeared except one, said it was a complete history of Rolla -----everything from hydro to offshore six blader. TBC.

Arrived at the hotel one morning driving a Merc with C.D. numberplates accompanied by one of Devon & Cornwalls finest complete with flashing blue lights.

Sounds to me you met Colonel Peter Tejera, the Venezuelan naval attaché , had a son Pablo, was tipped to be the next Venezuelan prime minister.
His wife Anna used to take my wife shopping at Harrods----she always parked her two seater SL Mercedes on the pavement, got away with the CD plates.
Peter first came to me wanting a race engine for his Shakespeare tunnel boat----in the end I set it up for him and showed him how to drive it. He then wanted a Molinari sprint, so I took him down to Como to collect it, he had a works OMC, he did a deal with GG and wound up with a factory Twister,.
He shipped the motor back to Caracas in the torpedo tube of a Venezuelan submarine.
He then did a deal with MGM and hired them the sub to do a film with Cary Grant, I think it was called the petticoat submarine-----anyway ,it got painted pink in the film.
Peter always had a silver hip flask that contained "Panther Piss"-----a 50/50 mix of Brandy and Grand Marniere when we tested in the winter and spring we were always grateful for a slug of his favourite brew. He had friends in very high places, was a nearly perfect gentleman, but more of him later----he's a complete chapter on his own.
No time to tell you of the great day and the wonderful Bar-B-que we had tonight, maybe get around to telling you tomorrow, Sweet dreams, MYGGWY, J.

What the hell I am going to do with that Dave, I have no idea, but that's what I do, I like a shape or design and I buy the thing-----sticker price for that flower pot was £90-----I got it for a fiver. It's been stuck in the cupboard ever since, only got pulled out ' cos I stuck all the Halen-Gars in there, had a massive purge of clearing out old half filled paint cans and rolls of electric cable etc, am a bit of a hoarder by nature so it was hard to chuck anything I thought might be useful in later life until I realized I should only be looking at stuff I might need in the after life.?

Had another of those days that can't be planned for, had the two grand kids for the week , then Matt&Kathy came to collect them Saturday. Next door neighbour Steve has a great party house with an indoor pool-----13acres of garden and lawns----fishing pond and woods----a paradise for kids!
About 30of us were invited for a swim and a Barbie and a wine Quaff ----been another perfect day, hot sun, beautiful evening, 70/s music, bit of dancing, great friends and neighbours, as my old friend Reed Eller used to say with his palms pointing upwards-------------

Just got 10 minutes spare to tell you about today.
Matt and Kathy slept here the night and have just packed the the kids into their car.
As Reed used to say----there's two kinds of lights -----Headlights and tail lights------i'm happy to see both.
We head off to Eastbourne in a while to Jills nephew Ian's 50th birthday party He's a chippy at Gatwick airport, Nice bloke , so i don't mind the 150 mile round trip-------it's sunday and a coastal run, with the kids on holiday and bad tempered parents in charge of the family jalopy, you just have to be that extra yard more careful. All Jills family [THE PURDIES] will be there , so i have to be on my best behaviour. Let's just take what comes with the day-------wring the best out of every day, remember what i told you all about the 86,400 seconds----it still stands-----have a nice sunday.

Well, some you win-----,some you lose-----some you remember----some, you just don't bother to remember. I suppose as a reunion for the Purdies it was right up there among the " yeah, yeah way to go" gatherings.Me, myself, have nothing to say.
First thing you saw as you walked in the door was a DVD compilation of Jilly's first marriage to Mike Purdie on a 60" TV. With all the clan gathered from 1964!! I wasn't "Pissed off" so much---as, let's just say I was a tad "Miffed". Was a beautiful day and everyone was well pleased with themselves and congratulating each other. After 3hours I decided 'twas time to head home-----the DVD was playing over and over, as we headed for the door I couldn't resist a last parting shot at the congregation---Yup says I ---all very well----but the daft bugger couldn't keep her could he? I couldn't hide the huge smile as Jilly and I waved our fond goodbye's and walked out the door!!!

Was up early and itching to get the machines singing, was still in a state of "well siss on you pister," had to do something. Just to calm the situation, was doing a bit of internal seething from yesterday's idiocy.
Remember i told you about the Saturnight night Barbie-----well, Steve next door was burning huge portions of ACACIA, you may , or you may not know that ACACIA was used for the rollers in old fashioned mangles------grannie always had one out back next to the " Peggy tub" -----the wasing was squeezed through the rollers to get excess water out . Long and short of this is ----I " rescued" a wheelbarrow full of the firewood and started to play with it!! Hard as Garbrecht playing poker. More later.

My sainted mother was the same, if I talked a lot I was a "GOBSH-TE"

I loved my sainted mother even though she threw my clothes out of my bedroom window out into the street when I was 17years old and told me to bugger off. I knew she didn't mean it, I must have just pissed her off about something----I just don't remember what, but I told her if she ever did that again, I would leave home.
Well, just a year later, she did it again, and I gave her the blessing and made her a saint, packed my gear and moved down south, just about as far away as I could get, I was a master baker with attitude and I could get a job anywhere, and I did.
Never did return to Bradford except to visit over the next 20 years, then stopped going back altogether -----we were "incompatible" I believe is the word. Mum and dad followed me down south 5years later, along with my brother and two sisters.
My mother and I had a "love hate" relationship for the next 65 years, loved her to bits, but couldn't be with her more than ten minutes before we were at each other's throat , she outlived my father who died when he went into hospital for the first time in his life and caught a hospital virus at the age of 92. My younger brother NIPPER, (Geoffrey ) died aged 60, two sisters are alive and well.
I tell you all this just in case you think I was an orphan, or adopted, or found in a garbage can, there are those of you out there who will swear I NEVER had a mother and father, just wanted to prove I'm almost humanoid , and I had sod all that was interesting to tell you anyway, and I couldn't think of a topical joke.
Remind me to tell you the swan joke when we all meet in Tavares, but only if I've had a skinful.

Last day before we get the tail end of a hurricane, decided to have a day out on the SUNSEEKER with my sister Angela, so Crack-O-sparrow were off down to Southampton to the port of
Hamble -Le -Rice, used to be just plain Hamble ' till it went all upmarket and posh. That's where my grandson in law and head honcho at GIECO hails from. It's always been a bit of a toffee nosed, yachtie spot-----just hope I don't let the side down and lower the tone----doncher know!!! Jolly hockey sticks and all that.

Good on you MR. fun, promise you one of the best days golf you'll ever have with some scintillating company, Seebold, Serra, Bakos, Rich and Doreen, my daughter Sam and grandson Craig ( three time world offshore champ) and many more if the ever get of their arses and sign up.

Well, it turned out to be something of an anti-climax day, bit like biting into a "golden delicious"----or a "pink lady" and finding a big old worm in the middle.
Sun just didn't bother to show, cloud cover and moderate wind 18knots, and white caps in the Solent . Sod that for a game of soldiers methinks !! We stayed at the house catching up on current affairs, talking about the new conservatory Ange is going to build and at one o'clock decided to take a trip to Pompey and have an eat out lunch, nothing memorable, scampi and fries and a pint of London Pride.
So much for the day out on the Sunseeker!! It's Cowes week, regattas every day and a 1,000 boats entered for the round the island race, the Solent is full, so don't think we missed much. Things will be back to normal next week.

Tell you about my sisters though shall I?
Dad was flight engineer in bomber command flying Halifax bombers----did 36 ops over Germany to places like Berlin, Hamburg, Dresden and Gelsenkurchen , he was away from 1941-----1945 which meant there was plenty of time for my mother to put herself about a tad, which she managed with great flair and energy. I think I had 27 Canadian "uncles", 3 American, and one Australian, I learned "Texicana" when I was 10 years old and smoked "Sweet Caps" when I was 12.
Dad was demobbed in 1946 and tried to get mum back into line but without much success so he did the only thing that would curtail her extra caricular activities-----yup, you guessed it, he put "one up the spout". Man, I have to report that she was not best pleased at this turn of events, I was 17 and well into motorcycles by then, she used to love to ride pillion but that came to a sudden halt.
Angela was duly born and I loved this kid from that moment she appeared, mum started her shenanigans again so dad did what any good man would have done, he put her in the club again!!!
That kinda halted her waywardness and sure enough I had another sister----Janet.
Thats when I decided it was time to leave home for good and wave a fond farewell to my sainted mother and long suffering father.

Attachment 302994That's my youngest daughter Sam, yesterday she was playing in a medal competition and shot a hole in one-----she is pictured celebrating with the mandatory bottle of DOM P. wouldn't mind, except this is the second "hole in one" -----I once got within 10 feet, but that's as close as I ever made.
Bad news is -----she's coming to Tavares to compete with my grandson Craig, oh well, worse things happen at sea (as my sainted mother used to say).
