Here is is a teaser pic.
Boat ran like POOP Today. Starter 100% died halfway through the day. Pull started a couple times, then wouldn't kick when cold. Then tow dinghy ran out of gas.
Boat hp is WAY over a 19 pitch. This thing could use a 30 pitch or something.
5000-5500 rpm with a 13x19p it was 35-40mph. HORRIBLE !!!
Even with the motor jacked. The prop was so small for the hp, it went slower with the engine raised. I dropped it 3" on the jack plate, and it finally got traction. It has PKENTY of power. Still kicks in the pants at 35 mph but running out of prop. Still. Only 3/4 throttle too!!! Still breaking it in.
You need dock time in gear and set it up. Chryslers will start if you stare hard enough at the flywheel when they are set up right, cold or hot summer. That weather doesn't look cold so ... Looks good, good God you let a merc tow you in. The shoe was on the other foot for me last year , towed him right to the Merc marina, pictures questions... made it all worth while. Let it rev , 6000-6400 , don't over pitch it to the point of 5500 . CHeck the cyl psi yet? 165-175 !
Haven't re-checked psi yet. The engine has a super dead spot. Half throttle the motor completely dies. Below that is great. Above that is great. Just dies if you hold at half throttle.
Water was 55 degrees, and air was about the same yesterday. I think I broke my hand trying to pull start it after it sat for an hour. While it was warm, it pull started wicked easy.
around 20mph it porpoises horribly. About 30mph it leveled out. got it to 40mph a couple times, but didn't want to push the motor too much @ break in.
Still need to figure out this half throttle dead spot, and why its making the motor die.
Short video of the half throttle issue and it stalling out.
Idle and off idle is fine. Full throttle is fine. Just this half throttle junk!!!

^video.
Also found out my lower unit is 2.3:1 !!! Slowwww. I wonder if I can find a 120hp lower unit somewhere. They should be about a 2:1.
maybe something like this: http://boston.craigslist.org/nos/bpd/5534336071.html
You did your floats correctly , I think with those the low is about an 1/8 in higher than the top of the screw in jet when hanging level and the high is level when gently held up with one finger or level when carb is off the motor and held upside down ? Feels like a fuel pump issue , runs out of gas. I quess that has the Merc pump , check it for problems, not that those are bad because they're not , vented the tank, hose didn't collapes? . After that stall you weren't able to restart ? 2.3 : 1 , is a bit low but if you can find a good prop . Does it have a primer or choke and did you try to bump it when it was falling over ?
Fuel pump is brand new / rebuilt and is the newer square type. Also runs fine at wide open - Deff not a fuel pump issue.
Float levels were set @ even with the bottom of the carbs.
After it dies like this, no problems restarting at all. Just dies out at mid throttle. It's a progression though.
Example...
10% throttle feels like 10%.
20% good...
30% good...
40% feels like 30%.
50% feels like 30% and starts to die off.
A little more, and it just dies out.
If I go from Idle, immediately up to 75-80% throttle or more, it goes no problem. Bizarre ! ! !
If its starting to die, and then I floor it... it dies.
When the bowls are off and the floats are hanging is the bottom corner of the float just at or above the top of the screw in main jet. These carbs have two settings , two tabs to adjust . It sound like its running out of fuel or maybe flooding out can't tell from vid . Also the idle mix screws on each must be worked to get the proper off idle mix. After a couple more hrs running do the fine tunning. I found the pic, primer and Merc pump . Bumping the primer will only squirt it down one hole, if it had chokes all three would close and open so a bump won't work as well to check for a lean spot . Did you read the jet size / I think about .074 ?
Two tabs to adjust on the float bowls? I had no idea. Service manual didn't even say anything about that. I'll pull one apart this afternoon.
I did play with the idle screws for about a half hour last week. Also played with the needles for a while out on the pond yesterday too. too lean, and it would sneeze intermittently. My screws are set about 1.25 to 1.5 turns out. Tuned in eighth turn increments.
No chokes, only the enricher solenoid.
I'll check the float bowl tabs and jet size this afternoon.
Got a new starter on Amazon for $55 ! It'll be here Wednesday.
Float, I run mine as I decsribed above. This is how Tillys on Chrysler are set . This page is from Force. Same style Tilly just the lower adj has the float bit lower. I would try just at top of main jet for the outside lower corner of the float or a hair higher to start . Or does yours have the plastic float with plastic tab 2 for the lower?
Float heights are all perfect. Main jets say .076
So back to the drawing board ?
Those are the non adjustable tab 2 for lower height. So when you're running up to plain into the mid range and it wants to fall over bumb the primer/choke to see if it helps it . If it picks up you're lean , if it stalls it right quick you're not. YOu didn't notice any fuel spilling out a small hole on the top side of the carb, if so your needle is sticking. I'm not sure from the vid if it is running out of fuel but it looks like it . YOu say it will run at 20, 30 ,40 on the vid it looks like 10 and then stall. I would look through the pump again , I've had check valves and diaphrams that were bad and it ran fine at idle, lost pressure going up and still managed to pull near top rpm, only to get worse with short time. Did you check the plugs for fuel after the last stall before trying to restart, and were the bowls full of fuel when it stalled ? Do you have more jet sizes at hand?
