The first time i saw Bill Badsey run a boat with a air scoop was on a Couger Cat at Windemere around 1973? and i didn`t think it made it any faster` some years later when i knew Bill much better i asked him about the air scoop he said he had developed it for some of the race circuits in South Africa for racing at higher altitude he claimed in one race against the Omc Rotaries in South Africa he was running his own V4 Evinrude and he only just got beat?
Yep, married to him! We live in Cocoa, FL. Bill will be 80 next month.
He remembers. Says he used to send y'all off on wild goose chases for parts and stuff. The only boat he has these days is his bass boat and it's for sale!
Pat,
Tell Bill that Chick Says hello. I had a lot of good times with him and 309
Will do. He's still going strong, looks the same, just gray!
Need to get this thread going again. Here is a shot I found that I think is Jackie instructing Mark on the finer points of boat racing at an early age.
Believe it or not, that is Jim Hauser as a kid in a Mercury ad picture. I have another that Jim sent me a couple of years ago - Steve Sirois
I believe this is a dyno shot of the engine that was used on Mert's Record Boat. I'm trying to get the original.
I know the engine did not have a starter but maybe for dyno testing it did. Maybe Willabee, Schunk, Hetz, or RCKID74 would know.
I don't see how that could be the record powerhead. The one we built at Racing was never put on a dyno, just built and put on the boat. It had an aluminum flywheel and a twin pipe exhaust system when it left the plant. The one that Lanpheer's group built at Plt #6 (the one he says was used for the record) had Tillotson carbs and he said the single pipe exhaust would not work on it. The picture has Morgan carbs and a single pipe system.
I see some blueing on the exhaust manifold in your picture, makes me think it is just a shot of a very early C6.
Shunk was not involved in this attempt, he had just come to Hi Perf and was working on the rotary whipper, The Mighty KT! Hetzel did all of his work underwater, he wouldn't know if the boat even had a powerhead! :D
Have you got anymore pics of this engine , with the 2 into one exhaust tuner ? Very few pics of these engines have been posted , probably the best exhaust tuned inline 6 .In Willabee's post one engine has 2 pipes and the other only 1 . Was the 2 pipe motor the one used for the record?
Are any of the any of the crew who did the record runs with that boat around to ask about the particulars? There seems to be some confusion about the exact engine configuration used. This may be because of the advertising photo differs from the news photos. I wonder how they decided on the final package?
