This thread is priceless with photos and info, let’s please not ruin it ok? I have my mom in the hospital on a feeding tube now so really, please keep everything cool because it’s been very difficult to watch over things lately.

Sorry to.hear of your Mom. Been in and out hospital all year with MDS, a blood bone marrow cancer. Hoping for the best Greg.

don't know how much wheeltime you have in large vessels but from my perspective you don't drive a yacht , you finnese a yacht. lot going on there , wind, current. propulsion . just to name a few. bottom line is it's a handful

Water ports are the same on both heads , but look how much higher the intake port is. 200 -300 more horsepower .. easily. But it does take a very long valve stem hanging out in the port . Makes the head of the valve whip around like a flag on a windy day ..

Yamaha leads the pack in airflow development. Line of site , like the Lambo . Centralized intake valve placement and to keep away from having to "bend the air" around a short side radius , they just put in a third intake valve . A bit ahead of it's time .. Americans have accepted 4-valve heads , even 4 stroke outboards with hokey lookin intake manifolds .. might as well accept the 5 valve as the powerhouse head of choice. :)

Look how high the port is from the deck , and the angle it assumes . Could easily fit in the valley of a V configured engine , and have a almost "straight down shot".

That 5 valve yamaha head design is 40 years old already. I had them on an 85 maxim X 700 then an 86 FZX 700 S. The carbs were aimed straight down and the motors were leaned forward at 45 degreees. Then they were on the FZ 750 and FZ 1000-the entire 5 valve line up was called Genesis. The exhaust servo was the next year. Yamaha has always been the ground breakers in new technology and bringing new product to the market. They came out with the 1st 4 stroke motor crosser, first 4 stroke snowmobile, first side by side, etc. etc.
