You asked a question on a Saturday, it's only Monday and you're throwin' one of your little tantrums again. I didn't even look at my computer over the weekend, had too much "spring" stuff to do.

Let's see now ..... you didn't kill the thread, there probably aren't many people that can talk about the "V" hulls, then there are those where only racing came close to sex, of course they don't qualify as "Hot Singles", I certainly do not have the "feckin' HuMP" (whatever that is), powerabout isn't even close and now Steverino is looking for "a certain Mr. Jackie Wilson " that can answer his question accurately ..... I wish him good luck with that!

Ok now, I think I'm all caught up .....:D

Feckin hump is akin to "Sulks"----pouting and pissed off-----mild disagreement and sticking out of the lower lip to show discord or non agreement with seniors or betters.
Hope this clarifies the confusion somewhat.

C'mon John, you can do better that, I met you at the OFF meeting a couple of years ago and was amazed that you were such an affable character in spite of all your cranky wankel dillusions, just a tad overweight, but then ,-----aren't, we all?

See Jackie, I knew you couldn't stop. I figured If I threw in a jab you would be complled to reply. I didn't mean anything bad or nasty, just something to keep you going. Besides, it wan't a million a race. it was only 1/2 million.

If we are being totally honest here Johno, then I have to admit to a sneaking admiration to OMC---Jack Leek, and all the folk who had enough balls to TRY to tame that damn miserable device that had broken everyone's heart that got within a country mile of it.
Myself, I don't honestly care if it cost a half or ten million a time, there was never anything before or since that made that wonderful sound when it finally hauled asse and worried the top brass at Oshberg out of their socks.
just the once will I tell you it was a wonderful effort by all concerned before I get back to telling you that even to this day, there is not a wankel, anywhere in the world,that is produced, is up and running, and makes a profit. That is faster, more economical,fuel efficient, or quieter than any other form of propulsion.
it is a hundred year old fatally flawed dream, that for some strange reason, every now and again gets resurrected, a few million spent on it, only for it to be thrown back to the museums of inventions and buried for a few more years.

I count myself lucky to have seen it, heard it, raced against it, and met some of the people involved in it.

Are you working on that list of the 8 races it entered and the 6 it won? I did spend a little time on that project but don't get the same results. I was hoping your list would clear the picture.

I haven't been on here for quite a while but a conversation at work about the Twistercraft's got me thinking that you are the one that could answer these questions as you were there. Was there actually three or four built. I have heard both. I thought four. So, I went digging back into our photo archives looking for pictures of any I could find. I came up with negatives of three of them. Little Blue, Little Red, and as Shunk called it the "Rhino Nose" boat. Little Blue is from a photo shoot in 1973 on the Fox River. It shows Berghauer's number but it may be Spalding driving it. You probably remember. There are shots of Little Red in Eufaula, AL 1973 and St. Louis 1974. The "Rhino Nose" is from Lake Carroll in 1974. Here is a trivia question. Were they called Little or Lil? I sort of remember that "Lil Red" was painted on the deck of the boat.
I have the negatives at a photo shop and when I get them back I will post them. Was Little Blue the one that the chicken truck ran into?

Did I get it wrong somewhere along the road to nowhere-----------I always thought GG was "RHINO NOSE" and LIL RED was the hot single down at judy's gin mill, and LITTLE BLUE was Eskimo Nell from way above Vancouver.

..... I'd rather see what Rotory John comes up with. I'm not sure about the results of a couple of the races. I think I found the eight events, but they were not all covered by Powerboat.

Paris , one of them ran for quite a while before the carbs fell off, DNF number 1
Parker-the pair of them did three laps in total before puking, DNF number 2

Hi Mike, bout time you got back in the game! .....There were four, two 17's and two 16' sprints. I'm not familiar with the term "Rhino nose", but the sprints were known as 'Lil' Red and 'Lil' Blue. I don't remember who the creative genius was that named the second sprint 'Lil' Blue, the boat was white! I'm pretty sure that Lil Red was indeed painted on that boat and don't recall any name being painted on the other.

I think Merc put up the new boat storage building with a carpenter shop at Racing on 20 Wisconsin St. in late 70. Carl Stippich was hired and moved his Winnebago motor home next to the building. He lived in the Winnebago during the week and most weekends drove it home (Milwaukee I think) to visit family.
Initially he spent most of his time repairing busted Molinari's and there was always an abundant supply of those available. Over the winter months he built the first 17' Twistercraft. Somewhere in that 1970/1971 timeframe, Jack Ferris was transferred from the Plt. #5 boathouse to Racing and he worked with Carl.

Mert had retired from racing after Havasu in 1970, but as Racing Manager, he still did some testing. He did all of the setup work with the new boat and a Twister I. When he thought he had it right, he took it to a race in Lake Tahoe. Stickle went with him, dragging a Molinari along to help gauge how the Twistercraft did in a race. That's how it was back then, the only place Mert could find to run the boat for the first time was Lake Tahoe, imagine the hardship of that! :rolleyes:

Anyway, the boat ran okay, but it wasn't the "Molinari Beater" some had hoped for. Lee Sutter was a new, up and coming driver for Merc back then and it was decided that his first shot with factory equipment would be this Twistercraft. He never even got it home! He came up to Oshkosh to do some testing, stopped with the troops for a little bar racing at Judy's Gin Mill and then managed to get into an accident with a chicken truck ..... "feathers everywhere" he said. :mad:

I have included a photo of the first one. I don't remember why they put Hering's #457 on it, but that's Mert behind the wheel. It's also the one pictured on the Merc placemats used at Havasu. This might be the "Rhino nose" you were referring to?

Almost forgot to clarify a statement you just made ..... you said Jackie "must be really getting old". For the record, Jackie has been really old for a very long time.

Here is what Willabee posted way back in February 2005 (post #138);

"Mercury had hired Carl Stippich to design and build the Twistercraft. Prior to this race he and Jack Ferris had built two marathon boats. Lee Sutter wiped out the first one when it was hit by some guy that ran a stop sign while driving a chicken truck..."feathers everywhere" according to Lee. Bill Petty flipped the second one at Morgan City. So Carl built a new sprint boat that Jim Merten prepared in Oshkosh.

By this time, Bill Seebold had been racing team boats for about two years and had established himself as one of the top drivers. Merc put him in the new sprint called Little Red and he drove it to the fastest heat ever recorded in outboard history, 85.633 mph, in winning the S class in Miami."

Bill Seebold driving Little Red. A few drivers had a turn with Little Red, I know Bob Spalding drove it in 1973 in Peterborough, Canada. I think Little Red was maybe built to go directly against Jimbo's little Goat Boat. Last I heard, Dave Packer had Little Red.

One of the Twistercrafts ended up here in Canada with Oley Berkis in 1978. This Twistercraft started as a full front but was modified by Oley and John Scythes into a pickle-fork and had a Seebold rear cowling fitted that confused its identity to many.
