It's the ONLY way to check the oil level. Anybody lifted one of these cowls off lately? It's not anything like cowls made thru the late 90s. Durable, access door and latching mechanism are aircraft quality. Makes an old inline cowling look Fred Flintstone primitive. Only problem is its weight. Must weigh 45-50 pounds. Make sure to have a stable place to stand when lifting one of these off a floating boat! I think they are made with standard resin infused glass? If Merc wants to get some weight out of their V8s quickly, an autoclave carbon fiber cowl would be the way to get there. Forget the cost. Well worth it vs boosting a 45+lb cowl. Damn near a two-person job!
