Unfortunately for Mercury after all the above improvements this motor was still a crossflow design. The OMC loopers just had more grunt.

...always had "Merl" on his uniform... Merlyn Culver...pasted away back in 1974. Mercury's first sales manager. he renamed elmer's thor outboards "Mercury" in 1940 at the new york boat show, with carl's permission. was kiekhaefer mercury's first outboard distributor, out of his dayton ohio shop, up until the mid-60's when carl took it away from him & another major hardware store distributorship in florida(gainesville), and began shipping motors directly from the factory to the dealers. this was when carl built the kiekhaefer st. cloud florida
