New subject: While refinishing my '87 M200 gearcase, I noticed this elongated raised area on the starboard side, kind of in line with the driveshaft, but at the lower edge of the torpedo. Any guesses as to what it is? (JFL put me up to this!)Attachment 480441

Hmm..
Regardless of whether the gearcase was sandcast or diecast, the casting needs to be "fed" thru risers, gates and runners. The raised area might be the contact point for one of these foundry features. If the raised area seems to come and go on these gearcases it's an indication of how these castings were ground and cleaned prior to machining by Merc employees.
