I replaced about half of the engines at my shop. Mercury never actually said what caused the failures, however no break in + wot off trailer + Pro bass fishermen = stuck pistons. I did get a thank you note from then Mercury Marine manager of special markets, Bill Bucher, and FREE mercury jackets for my guys.
...to stretch out my explanation a bit. you can't take a cold motor, in a cold envirement, in cold water, and start it "cold"...and procede to instantly run it to wide open throttle, without risk... any 2-stroke. there are ways to help reduce this risk. but these were overlooked evidently, on the day of the tournament.
