Charlie Strang, then at Mercury, invented the stern drive. It’s surprising OMC did not do better with it. Patents I suppose.
The cobras weren't a terrible design. The shift mech could be wonky a little and the oil fill procedure killed a lot of them but anything was better than the 400/800 mess.
