Is it good for the rich to get richer? I googled ‘income inequality vs growth’. There are mixed views on this in the economic world. It reminds me of the old joke that if you lined up 100 economists, they would all point in different directions. My impression is that the majority view is that income inequality has a negative correlation with growth. Maybe that’s just the way Google presents results.

Looking at how the automotive industry shapes itself today, it feels to me like it took a wrong turn somewhere. Faced with the challenge of cutting down emissions, the industry somehow decided that the best way to do that is turn to battery power, instead of going for what many consider to be a more valid choice, hydrogen.
With all the powers that be committed to this course of action, debating the whys and hows of this development is no longer constructive. But when hearing that a hydrogen-powered truck managed to travel no less than 1,806 miles (2,906 km) on a single fill of hydrogen, you'll be forgiven for wishing things were different.

It was the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) that made the announcement of this achievement in mid-December. The truck in question is the H2Rescue, a prototype developed by the DOE together with the U.S. Army, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the U.S. Naval Research Lab, and Accelera by Cummins.

The truck in itself was designed as one to be used in emergency response, military, and utility scenarios, but while burning hydrogen instead of regular fuel. To do that, it uses a Cummins Accelera fuel cell engine paired with a 250-kilowatt traction motor.

Back in November, we're told, the H2Rescue was tasked with traveling the roads of California while carrying 386 pounds (175 kg) of hydrogen in its tanks. It had to do that in rush hour traffic, while traveling at speeds of between 50 and 55 mph (80 to 86 kph) and in ambient temperatures that ranged from 60 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit (16 to 27 degrees Celsius).

For the run, which took an undisclosed amount of time, the operators of the truck asked for representatives of the Guinness World Records to be on site to certify the fact that the H2Rescue has set a record. And that's exactly what happened, as at the end of the almost 2,000-mile trip, the truck had burned through most of the hydrogen fill, but not all – 15 pounds (seven kg) of fuel were still left when it was all said and done.

According to the DOE, the truck managed to travel the entire distance while releasing absolutely zero grams of carbon dioxide (CO2), a far cry from the 664 pounds (301 kg) of CO2 a normally-fueled truck, rocking a normal internal combustion engine, would have released over the same distance.

Taking the math a bit further, the government organization says such an achievement would translate into the saving of 1,825 gallons (6,908 liters) of fuel and the reduction by 2.5 metric tons of CO2 emissions each year.

It's unclear at this point if the research being conducted with the H2Rescue will actually translate into a real-world solution anytime soon, but one can only hope that at least government car and truck fleets will embrace hydrogen on a larger scale for their needs.

Yikes, hydrogen. Unless it's really possible drill into the ground to get massive amounts of low cost hydrogen, I am far from convinced that hydrogen is the answer for cars. For long distance trucks and planes maybe. But not cars.

It takes a lot of energy to produce hydrogen. It's bulky to store. Once you have hydrogen, fuel cells are pretty efficient. But making the hydrogen and transporting it is not efficient.

When I was in the boat business, you could always tell when the rich did not make their profits. The marine industry has always been an accurate indicator for that. I have been in aerospace the last 17 years and although there is a greater lag time, if the rich don't like their profits then they pull back. That affects everyone down the line. That is capitalism. I have a great job because of the one percent. (and let's not forget how many democrat liberals are in that group too). If you like the idea of democratic socialism then I suggest you move to another country, especially since Trump won and is about to unleash America First. And Cuda, btw, you are not an average Joe. You are well off. You should be glad Trump won. Invest right and you will make even more money.

One of my marine trade reports just listed 4th qtr of ‘24 for many mfg and it averaged down 8% - 24% so the money for toys *****et has been turned way down!

Republicans (Thune) are proposing ending the $7,500 EV tax credit and ​charging them $1,000/year in place of the gas tax (that they don't pay) for road maintenance. That oughta boost sales... of ICE vehicles!

Global EV sales were up to 17.1 million in 2024, a 25% increase from 2023. EV cost in China is reported to be at parity with gasoline cars. Of course China subsidized their EV industry like crazy to get there, thinking EVs are the future. At cost parity, for most users, an EV is an obvious choice. China is the world's largest exporter of cars now, and a lot are EVs.

I suppose the US can be an island.

Don't know what makes an EV an obvious choice. I wouldn't have one unless they were half the cost of IC truck. Can't tow anything anywhere without stopping to recharge every hour. I've towed 9 hrs each way 2 times in the past 45 days. Impossible with EV.
