That is not true . The drive shaft bearing is shimmed to achieve pinion height .

The "flag" does represent backlash , however it is adjusted by the shim behind the forward bearing race … :thumbsup:
Set it by the book , with the proper tools and you wont need to paint the gears and pull the carrier .. :eek:
Although I do have wet Permatex blue , drying Dykem blue and a yellow paint stick.
Since I have a pinion depth tool for a 9" Ford , I don't use paint there either .. :nonod:
...last 9'' i owned was a factory "WAR" 9'', in one of my original muscle cars in the seventy's. you ever heard of the WAR rearends? those letters were actually cast into the front of the pig as they came from the factory. kinda rare in those days. my others were the factory "N" nodular iron 9''er's, like this one... that was a lot of years ago for me.https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8086/8...cca87167_b.jpg
