Will a stock 250 efi with bobs lwp get a 22 velocity into the 80's? Thanks Mike
I don't know...
AmityRay's runs a fraction shy of 80 with a 300PM. Don't know what lower he's using. His boat is the slightly heavier Regal version.
Tom Foley's old boat, a Stepp version, ran about 84 with a 300pm, again, don't know what lower.
What's the real HP difference between the 250 efi and the 300pm?
There's a V22 on eBay right now, guy claims the stock 250 had 300 mods and runs 70 with 4 people and cooler, 75-80 light with the rear seat removed...
Back in the day i worked for rpm marine we had captain maintained with twin two hundreds and the team gulfwind boat in the shop they would stay with boats twice their size in almost any water.
The test that was in Powerboat Magazine calls out a fully rigged Stepp 22 full of fuel right at 2,000lbs with a stock 2.5 200 and no bracket. It ran 65 with this set up and a 14x26 Chopper.
Greg, that's correct. The 1411 lbs spec is hull only no motor, no fuel.
A few posts late here but I do believe Amityray is not running a low water pickup so with the right lower and prop set up he should see mid 80's i would think?
I am hoping for low 70's out of my set up once i get the boat together
set up ...
-1985 stepp velocity ( 2 lightened up progression seats, no carpet, no interior, no backseat, and lightweight race hatch)
- 225 carb'd 3 liter, 20 inch mid, bob's machine low water pickup
- looking to run 10-12 inches of set back
those are the basics to how my boat will be set up :)
Low 70's is where I hope to be as well. I just fabricated a new back bench seat out of fiberglass, its extremely light, 20 pounds maybe. I am running newer power 2003 EFI 225. You might be able to sqeeze a few more ponies out with carb motor though.
Here are a few pics of the seat I made. I shrink wrapped the old seat and used it as a mold, waxed it up good, and layed some glass. It's amazingly strong even without the stringers I will add.

Who's the big goofy guy in the last pic?
highvelocity- nice idea making a lightweight bench seat, I cant wait to see what my boat will do, I will definately update this thread in the spring with some performance numbers
Yeah, it's funny, I haven't worked with fiberglass that much, it's amazing stuff. I haven't supported the middle yet so I sat by the corner and it held me with no problem. As Dave will tell you I am a minimum of 230lbs...LOL
Also, since I am running a foot of set-back it makes the boat sag a bit more which is OK. But if I run in a chop the best way to run that boat is as flat as possible. For this reason I may try moving one or both batteries forward.
Your thoughts...???
I wish i could tell you my thoughts on moving weight around, but i have never ran my own boat yet, you could try putting a little bit of weight in the bow to see how it reacts, and if the boat does well then move a battery forward
High Velocity - great idea on the custom-fabbed rear bench.
I converted my stock rear bench to be able to stow some gear. The seat itself was actually built separate from the base, but screwed on from beneath at the factory. I separated the two parts, cut an access, cut away a protion of the middle support, painted everything white, screwed on a piano hinge and fabbed a strap handle. Now the bench does more than just tilt forward to expose the bilge. I can actually store a few things under the seat. It works well.
