I am guessing high frequency vibration is the culprit here. I don't think blue locktite was not on the market back then. I recall some of the alky racers using safety wire for that very reason.
Well.. I raced the Paris 6 Hours 1974 and remember very well when the overall leader (03 Scotti/Evinrude Rotary) passed me sometimes very close, but disappeared at the very end of the 6 hour race.
I also remember Jackie was not in the entry list for the race.
Maybe he was hiding behind the two rotary powered boats before the race.:)
I also remember the headlines after the race the year before (1973) when OMC and Merc raced the first V6 outboards.
