Actually managed to put in a full day today . Was out there crack-o-sparrow until noon— back out before two, was well past five when i called it a day—- a full 8 hours in the workshop and lots of progress on four totally different class of boats .
All of them in wood —- because i had it . Burmese teak as it happens . Two of the boats i simply wax polished —— did cover a third with lacquer first —flattened it with 600 — thats coming along best.
One of them is a four outboard centre console with a T Top to die for . Full instruments and radar and stuff like that. Probably be the end of the month before i have anything tangible to show.
SEE IF I CAN GET A FEW CONCEPTS TOGETHER FOR THE BRISTOL REUNION.
GODZILLA is a twin inboard stern drive — was tempted to make it into a five outboard driven rig —- but the length of time it takes to do motors —gear cases ——cav plates and mountages — steering linkages etc. props alone come out at over £100 —— might get it done for next Michaelmas.
already binned three superstructures—— but i have a great idea and ambition.
All four of them are much larger than the concepts i usually fernagle .
that was due to the size of the packing box timber i used . Car boot and scrapyard tomorrow — which means the mornings crapped out already. Thats it —im shagged out !!!
[QUOTE=Rotary John;3339894]Quote from Charlie Strang "
In those days tunnel boat design had not kept up with the available power and we had 4 deaths in 4 months. This led to the development of the safety cockpit—financially sponsored by both OMC and Mercury—which did a fantastic job of reducing risk." I'm sure not all the money went to Hodges. In 1985 Veldon sponsored 5 boats with safety cells.[/QUOT
Something been bothering me over the last few days—- its like an itch you cant quite reach to give it a good scratch. Finally figured out what it was ——-TUNNEL BOAT DESIGN HAD NOT KEPT UP WITH THE AVAILABLE HORSEPOWER AND WE HAD FOUR DEATHS IN FOUR MONTHS —
Now that is one hell of a statement to make — it blames the designers directly for the death of four drivers ——-TOTALLY WRONG.
How about Gear case failure———- engine seizure ——- prop breakage.——driver error—-flotsam. All the other “MITIGATING CIRCUMSTANCES ???????????
But it was a lot easier to blame the boat designers than take any responsibility whatsoever for the deaths of four drivers !!!!!!
I can tell you that in the case of Marks accident in Casales — the direct cause of the accident was EQUIPMENT FAILURE.
Could it possibly be that the engine manufacturers had not kept up with the materials necessary to cope with the increase in horsepower ??????
?Johnno, i have the utmost respect for CHARLIE STRANG and his achievements in marine engineering. I think he got it wrong this time and i have scratched the itch.

Stage one of any good wooden concept is levelling up and stitching together a usable chunk of material.
Jackie: You scratched the wrong itch. With the start of the rotary engine power far exceeded the boat designs. While I don't recall any injury or death because of it all of the drivers will tell you it's true. The came th V-6's and again the boats were behind the times. The V-8's were just the compilation of the problem. Look at todays boat with just q 2l jug on them
I never scratch anything that doesn’t itch . So you are trying to tell me that the product never failed and was in no way responsible for the death of the four drivers ——it was because the boat design was at fault ——- well forgive me if i do not agree with you in any way-shape or form— thats horse feathers .
Just like always Johnno—— motor companies always claimed that that the product was right —it was the boats that were at fault —- what a load of bollocks. I had more gearcase failures with Mercury than any other problem——- and i know damn well OMC had even more failures .
Reason there were no fatalities with the Rotory WAS, it never ran long enough or often enough to claim anything else —-other than being QUICK. BEFORE OMC Licked its wounds and called it a day ——same as everyone else that tried to produce one.
Lets face it —- true race engines König—-Anzani were going a bloody sight quicker than anything either Mercury or OMC were producing at the time on little tiny boats called HYDROPLANES.
MAIN PROBLEM WAS WEIGHT !!!!!!!!!!!
Just take the 100 hp motor —— doesn’t matter who bade it ——- it was a slab compared to a 100 hp König. [ Yes he did have one at that time ———— as did BEN ROOD. [hoganrood] ]
horsepower to weight was inefficient——- so lets blame the boatbuilders for not keeping up with us.
Bet you never once told any boat builder anywhere in the world, BY THE WAY—WE ARE BUILDING A 100 HORSEPOWER MOTOR -WOULD YOU LIKE TO. DESIGN A BOAT THAT CAN HANDLE IT ?
Both manufacturers were paranoid and so full of secret sh-t it was no longer funny.

Latest concept already found a good home ——going to an English pilot who was very good back in the day.
Have no idea why the damn pictures come out upside down—-they are all the right way up in my album—its only when i press the USE that they do a back flip.
Daughter Boo came by yesterday for a cup of tea and a chat —we spent the next three hours cleaning up the workshop——- blitzed it —— threw out half a dozen containers —-she wasn’t much impressed by the fact that i use the airline to blow the dust away instead of using a hoover.
She looked just like me when she left—— dirty face and filthy clothes and she was only here three hours!!!!!!!! Kids just cant take the heat these days.
actually looking forward to going into the shop this morning. Might get a bit of production going.
Had a mad fit of depression and ordered a couple of 30mm bottles of “powder based super glue “ was a ridiculous price [ what the hell -i can afford it] but i bought and paid for it.
that was a week ago. I keep getting daily tracking news .
Up to now its taken four days to get from the sorting centre to New Orleans via Rockford with further updates forthcoming ???????
i knew it wasn’t coming from china —-but i had no idea it was coming from the USA—- does this make me an international buyer or just a damn fool ??????
Was trying to explain to some of the old farts just what it takes to make a wooden concept these days. First you have to go foraging for some decent timber . Select the pieces you are going to use and FACE THEM UP. Glue them together and squeeze all the surplus out. Leave 24 hours to cure .
.Attachment 504021 This took two planks.Attachment 504023This pair took another four planks
Then do a drawing of the craft you are about to fernagle ——rough cut on the band saw to the required shape ———then take out the six spokeshapes and set to work.
Lot depends on how sharp the blades are and just how creative you are feeling.
This is why a hand made article will always leave a concept that came out of a bucket for dead .
Nothing can replace hand made ——-never will. Dont matter whether its food and drink or the crazy stuff i conjure up. There is only ever one original .
My sainted mother used to tell me ——- Thank God there is only one of you ——- and they destroyed the mould.
Attachment 504033Jackie: For your next luncheon.
Now that would be nice Johnno—— but i simply do not have the time for a leisurely breakfast with friends [i would probably fall out with them in the first week and get banned forever]
Have to tell you that whenever i stay with the SEEBOLDS over in Naples —- he usually takes me to breakfast somewhere — Mike usually drops in and its all very leisurely— we just hope “SQUIRT” doesn’t get to hear of it and feck up the meal. Now those i do enjoy.
Have a client with very little taste who wants me to put a pair of V8’s on a centre console —- at the moment i am “GAINFULLY EMPLOYED”.
Oh for the long gone days of totally uncomplicated television and film performances. High Noon—- Moby Dick—- Lassie — even Phsyco was common place —- east to understand and suited my level of intelligence, compared to the crap thrown at us today.
Movie stars don’t just act any more . They direct—produce and finance everything and anything .
And the price of cinema seats just goes on escalating.
normally i wouldnt mind any of this ——- in those days —- first thing you had to be able to do was act —- there was only two genders —HIM. And Her.
Storyline was a set piece GOOD and BAD———westerns featuring cowboys and Indians . Happy and sad [. Little women]. Brief encounter——etc
Screen adaptations from authors of the classic novels.,—-The great gatsby—— East of Eden——Grapes of wrath——. Mostly stuff you never had to think about —- we went to the cinema for light entertainment. Learned to read the classics ——-Dickens ——Voltaire —-Hemingway and Steinbeck.
Nowadays entertainment is sadly off balance ——— hero is either black—-gay—-lesbian or transgender with the punch line they were molested as a child by a nun from St Catherines or a Priest from St. Peter’s who was suffering from a mad fit of depression due to the fact, he saw his dog kicked by a unicorn when he he was holidaying in the Galápagos Islands after getting terribly seasick on the journey and being treated by the towns chief witch doctor with poison toadstools from the local graveyard — which made everything alright and explains everything.
nine out of ten films made today are either animated ——illogical—-psychologically depressing —-or made for morons and idiots.
Who gives a flying fart whether Johnny Depp beat the crap out of Amber —- or put her across his knee and spanked her arse . Get a life you dingleberries.
So , Will Smith bitch pats somebody on the cheek ——- why would i be remotely interested - If he had laid the fecker flat with a Mike Tyson uppercut i might have raised my eyebrows , but that would be it.
Thats me done for the day—- made some progress in the shop, not a lot, But you must remember I’m ninety and although i don't have any of the usual senior citizens complaints —- I’m cranky as assholes.
