Which is the better engine for my 96 Rally sport 300x promax or 250 Optimax?
What do you mean by better? 300x will be way faster, but the 250 will be quiet, more reliable, and get better fuel mileage.
Okay i mean that I want more speed but also a reliable engine that wouldn’t leave me stuck in the ocean
lets Say we are comparing two brand new engines just to make this easier, a 300x is a way nastier motor, without a doubt but won’t be as reliable. Not saying the 300x isn’t a reliable engine just saying with proper maintenance an optimax will last longer. A 250optimax will get better fuel economy, it will be way quieter pretty much a fishing motor with 250hp. All depends on what your looking for
I hate the four stroke movement so don`t think I`m leading you in that direction but any two stroke is a candidate for a burned piston at any time. Boating has been my passion sense I was a kid and burned pistons in a two stroke is simply part of it.
Have you ever heard the expression "opti-pop"? That being said my choice between the two motors you mention would depend on my use of the boat like Marks86 said. I like hp so my choice would be the X. Now on the Rally Sport I might go with the 250.
One point, I would never go out in any ocean alone with just one motor especially a two stroke.
The Optimax is super reliable, 250 is plenty of HP for that hull. The 300X is a killer engine, but all around I would take the 250 Opti all day.
Saying 2 strokes aren't reliable is an insane generalization.
X over op. Faster better been there done that. JMO
Smaller twins for ocean use without a doubt....
300x and a 9.9 kicker
I'm in the process of removing a 300 Promax (non X) from my Challenger in favor of a Opti 250XS. The 300 runs good. but the 250 is just nicer, smoother, less smoke, way less fuel, etc. For all out speed the 300X is tough to beat if that's what you're looking for.
I vote > Opti-pop. :-)
No need for twins, you’re running in the ocean, not crossing it. Unless you have some weird urge to run to Miami in a 21’ boat, go 250XS and get a Sea-Tow membership.

I`m not insane dude. Gotta have thick skin around here. I am old tho. I started this outboard racing thing in 1978 and have replaced to many pistons to count and most were stock motors. Let the weather change enough and it effects a two stroke in a big way. Now there are two strokes that have lasted records amount of time like that Toyota commercial with 500k miles on an original motor.
