A diesel optiflop. What could go wrong there. ;)
I am surprised they went down the diesel route, kerosene works much better once you inject it.
As far as I know, they aren’t really a “diesel” engine. They are a spark assisted engine that CAN run on diesel, or other fuels. Kinda like the old “multifuel” cummins that was in the old military deuce and a half. I don’t think they were ever designed to carry more load or be more efficient. It’s just an opti that has the capability of running fuels like jet A for the military and such.....mostly for a safety factor.
My recollections is that the US military demanded diesel after some boat fires.
The “multifuel” engine was made by Continental who also manufactured the old gasser engines in the deuce and 5-ton. The later 5-tons had a NTC250 cummins but it was diesel only.
The Continental multifuel engine was a diesel cycle engine with a fuel density controller that varied the amount of fuel injected based on its specific gravity...
Played with one in ATL. It's a spark ignition fired, opti with lower compression, GM glow plugs and a different tune. Was designed to meet US Navy specs for on board engines. Other then the smell you cant tell it's a diesel when running. Only rated at 175 HP.
It's cool but nothing fancy.
after letting go of my last offshore fat boat diesel powered, looking at buying a older center console that needs to be re-powered, something 30' plus that need new power. I like the idea of trailering to the keys instead if running down. Suzuki 350's seem to be the price leader, and now that they are owned by Yanmar, I feel pretty confindant they can serve my requirements. 700hp for 2 should get the job done.
